HELP NEEDED: Please read

We're currently cleaning up game pages but due to the large volume of games we need your help finding them.

If you find a game with one of the following problems, can you post it here with a short explanation?

- games with no or less than 4 screenshots
- games that have a stub review (very short review of less than 10 lines - usually written by either Kosta or Sebastianos)
- wrong information (wrong publisher, wrong data in the review, etc.)
- a game with more than 10 "must try" games at the bottom
- a game with no "must try" games at the bottom. Make suggestion to what to add to the List.
- a game with poor quality screenshots (poor quality, too small, badly resized, etc.)
- games with a missing download

Honestly, I think a single screenshot for text games is good as well.

TotalAnarchy 19-01-2009 01:36 PM

I think Beneath A Steel Sky has crappy screenshots. When I copied them they had the sizes 256x160. Most of the games that I checked have 320x200 and look very good.

Yep that's correct - I already have that on my list :). I already corrected the review (wrote it myself) but screenshots are next on my list.

Hatsen 19-01-2009 01:54 PM

I've just made a quickly look through the racing sections, for bad review and screenshots.

Lamborghini American Challenge: review is quite odd and short.
Ivan "Iron Man" Stewarts Super Off Road: review is quite short.
Lotus 3 - The Ultimate Challenge: review is a bit short.
Micro Machines: some of the screenshots seem like they're in poor quality.
Skyroads: short review, odd screenshots.
Stunt Driver: one of the screenshots, looks like it's been resized.
Wacky Wheels: short review.

TotalAnarchy 19-01-2009 01:59 PM

If you need screenshots, I can give you two. Just don't laugh... I made 2 screenshots a couple of days ago when I played the game. I thought that they were so funny :)

I knew I forgot something :p Thanks!

And thanks to everyone who have made suggestions so far! I'll make a list when I get home of all games needing attention.

Hatsen 19-01-2009 02:09 PM

Also while we're "cleaning up", why not delete 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic, and advice people to use Reloaded instead, in the future?

_r.u.s.s. 19-01-2009 02:10 PM

why deleting games that are already there=S

Why have games that doesn't belong here?
They have both always been freeware if i remember correctly, and it's also a good way to earn more space for the server.

But that's just a random idea I got.

They were added here before AR was created.
They will stay here. Period.

I personally thought it was odd that those two games would be on Abandonia since they're rather new. Reloaded would indeed be a better place for them. If we start adding recently made freeware games, we'll end up with more of those than true abandonware games.

I'll do so later - I'm still at work :p. I'll also remove those that I've corrected. Wacky Wheels already is.

TotalAnarchy 19-01-2009 04:12 PM

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/17...zards+VGA.html - Except for the last 3, all screens are bad
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/12...Places%29.html - No must try. You can put some other Leisure Suit Larry titles here.
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/12...torals%21.html - The same here.
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/12...r+Work%21.html - Bad screens and no must try. Also Leisure Suit Larry
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/12...ip+Out%21.html - Same here. Only the last screen is good. Les Manley is also good to include as a must try game for Leisure Suit Larry
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/14...Adventure.html - bad screens. No must try

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/10...niversary.html - bad screens except for the last one
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/689/Waxworks.html - More than 10 must try
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/602/Waynes+World.html - no must try
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/24...+Prophecy.html - no must try
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/31...ndbenders.html - Bad screens
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/10...+-+ICEMAN.html - No must try games. You can add there some games from the Police Quest series, they have the same developer team and probably feel the same.

Ok. Finished the adventure section related to screens, must try games and reviews. If I find more time I'll probably check that list one more time for the release date, dev/pub data and all that other stuff.

red_avatar 19-01-2009 04:25 PM

Thanks for all the work TotalAnarchy :) Very much appreciated. I'll try to fix most of those as quickly as possible.

Japo 19-01-2009 09:18 PM

I know I know I could fix these myself. I WILL if you give me enough time. :P Just so I can remind myself of them later, and why not in case another updater wants to do it before I find time. :P The screenies must be made again, the rest I'd fix it right now if I were already familiar with udpating functions and feared no possible borking due to rush.

All have noisy screenies:

Cirque de Zale

Colonization

Covert Action
also no related games, I suggest other MicroProse RPGs such as Sword of the Samurai--I know, wild thematic difference, but otherwise bull's-eye.

Sim City 2000

Star Control
also Archon is duplicated in the related entries.

Star Control II

Transport Tycoon

UFO - Enemy Unknown

I checked the adventure genre concerning release dates, pub/dev data, and the reviews. Found only minor problems which could be overlooked.

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/46...+of+China.html - Every time the apostrophe is used in the review I don't know why it's preceded by a backslash
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/24...II%2C+The.html - too much space between the paragraphs
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/46...s+in+Time.html - I don't know if you noticed, but between the ads and the review there is a little square image or something

verek_22 23-01-2009 08:38 PM

May I draw your attention to Wolfenstein 3D? It has a really short review for such a cool game. And a few of the pictures are blurry.

TotalAnarchy 24-01-2009 06:28 AM

Here are the problems in the action genre regarding all that stuff except the release information and the content of the review.

From what I understand the correct size of the screens should be 320x200. I found many titles that have 320x240 screens. Generally they look bad, but in some cases you don't see the problems at the first glance. That's why I specified when the screen have this sizes. In all the other cases I wrote them as "bad screens".

AFAIK it needn't be a problem. What's important for site layout is width, and the planned (and forced) width is 320 pixel colums. Some DOS games are 320x200, others 640x400, others (quite recent ones) 640x480. The first ones are published as original, the other two sets are resized 0.5x0.5. You want to keep the original aspect ratio, not to stretch the images, that's why the 640x400 ones end up at 320x200 and 640x480 at 320x240.

Every resizing that is not an enlargement following a relation of integer numbers need imply signal loss. So of course images resized from 640x480 into 320x240 don't look as good as the original game, but neither do ones resized from 640x400 into 320x200. Original 320x200 ones from older games are shown here in all their pixelated glory.

Note down images only if they're noisy (very blurry, in JPEG format, image file not 320 pixels wide --check by right-clicking on the image and selecting "properties" even if shown like that in the page).

Yes, 320x240 is a bit of a nuisance. I personally would have added code to detect the difference since it wouldn't matter for the review page whether some screenshots are taller - it's the width that is limited and since 320x200 and 320x240 has the same width, it's no problem.

TotalAnarchy 24-01-2009 11:19 AM

Hmmm, I thought they were both limited, the width and the height. Good thing I didn't took them into account when checking up the adventure list.

I'll clean the list in a moment.

They are limited when viewing them since the images get scaled but it would be cool if the screenshots were increased in height when needed.

I don't really think it'll be hard to do that, once the site problem will be resolved. If it will be resolved, that is.

Also, I know this isn't the right thread to ask, but why is Double Dragon 1 still a "no go" game, when for example DD2 and DD3 are available for download. Also when I saw the list of games on site but no go, it said it's approved.

English language version?
It appears the translations report the status of some games incorrectly.

Luchsen 24-01-2009 01:37 PM

It's because DD was thought to be sold at CDAccess.com. And the list is the phase between it's no go and it's available for download.

How do you deal with companies that have more than one name through their history?

I'm unsure about the actual consensus, I myself would use the name the company had at the time of the game. Like for example Apogee instead of 3D Realms (as in the Wolfenstein 3D review on site).

Paco 25-01-2009 11:55 AM

Done with Action-Also-Try-List.

@Red put Gauntlet on List, since it use Gauntlet 2 Screenshots. So its need to be replaced.

Most recent name (old names in the company's profile). It's a must since the script doesn't allow us to allot multiple names to a company. But it was never followed really, so: radical name changes which last a noteworthy time and which are not followed by a backnaming count as own company.

Is it possible to volunteer to re-review a game if the one who wrote the original stub review is no longer here? I ask because I've played Desert Strike quite a bit, and Kosta reviewed it (and gave it only four screen shots). If it's doable, I'd like to offer re-reviewing it and giving it new (and more) screenshots.

Also, I could do...

Wolfenstein 3D
Flashback

_r.u.s.s. 25-01-2009 05:39 PM

i dunno guys, erasing reviews and replacing them with new ones, even though they are not so long, is like replacing a piece of history :(

Those reviews were just stubs though - they were written in half an hour just so there would be a short description along with the game update - from what I heard they were supposed to get replaced by proper reviews. I think we owe proper reviews to the visitors over keeping an article that is a few years old but lacking in quality & content.

The Coop 25-01-2009 07:17 PM

_r.u.s.s.- If I had written a single paragraph about a game, I wouldn't be shocked or hurt by its being replaced by a longer, more in-depth review. I think those games need a review that feels less like a place holder, and more like informative insight on what the game's about (no offense intended to Kosta whatsoever). I know those stub reviews have been there for a good while, but if red_avatar is right, then they need replacing.

Again, if it's going to be done, I volunteer to re-review the three games I listed in my previous post. I've played all three quite a bit, and I think I could do a decent write up (see my The Immortal and Powerslave reviews on this site for reference if needed).

Yes it's possible.
Those reviews are the first that Kosta made when this place started to run.
They lack of many important info, it would be nice to see detailed reviews and tech tips to run those games.

Perhaps this is a bit off topic, but you'll agree with me that there's something wrong with this game :p

:( Why is Abandonia still using the old review for "Armaeth" This was written by someone who could not figure out the "controls" and did not even finish it. Can't get too protective or sentimental about that! Wendy Mann wrote a super review and walkthrough..this game deserves more..Its a little gem.

Yeah these are the kind of reviews which I think deserve replacing - when the person who played it obviously didn't read the manual or bothered to find out how to actually play the game, it doesn't make for a very useful review.

Reminds me of this old PCGamer review of Magic Carpet 2 written by Stu Campbell where he criticised the game for not allowing this and that while you COULD do those things - he simply hadn't found out how.

Well, I've gotten Desert Strike's review and 4 extra screenshots uploaded, Wolfenstein 3D's review uploaded, and Powerslave's review, CD Scan, 8 screenshots, and manual PDF uploaded. They're in a folder called "The Coop". If anything got messed up in the file transfers, let me know and I'll re-upload them.

I'll be adding Flashback's review in a couple days. I'll post here again once it's been uploaded.

Dave 03-02-2009 11:26 AM

Thank you very much The Coop :)

The Coop 05-02-2009 02:52 AM

Glad to help :)

I've uploaded the Flashback review to my folder. I also uploaded 8 new screenshots for it, because while playing the game, I found that the resolution for the game seems to be 256x224, not 320x200 like what's currently on the game's page. I found no options to change the screen resolution, so I'm not sure where the current screenshots came from. Maybe they're from the Amiga or the CD version?

Anyway, I grabbed 8 new ones at what looks to be the proper size.

Japo 05-02-2009 06:43 PM

Yes I think Flashback had a weird resolution. But because of layout the site shows all images at 320 px wide, even if the image file were actually a different size. And I think our current policy is actually resizing the image files, because the daily quiz doesn't do like the review pages and that can bork the layout (remember the Chip's Challenge quiz some days ago?).

Hehe, my fault. I've taken note, don't worry. ;)

The Coop 07-02-2009 03:44 AM

Alrighty. I believe I've solved the dilemma of the Flashback screens. I went back and changed the dimensions so all eight images were 320x224, and made sure the side borders were black. All the adjusted images have an "a" at the end of their name, and were upload to the "Flashback" folder within my folder. I know it's nit picky and all, but having the images stretched a lot just looks bad.

Also, I just uploaded the Star Wars: The Arcade Game review with eight screenshots, as well as the Mortal Kombat review and two more screenshots for it (there are only six images on the MK page right now, so I figured two more would be good for the taller review page). All this is in my folder as well.

The thing is they're not that similar.

_r.u.s.s. 07-02-2009 12:48 PM

yeah, that would be the issue

but if there were, for example a game with 11 series (i just mean example, of games that are really simmilar) then it would be only cool if there were even 10 screens

but i mean, if they're not that simmilar, away with them of course

Another Unknown Contributors-Thread

Dave 08-02-2009 02:41 PM

Well that topic is old, I will merge it with Romano one.
Ok, use this one:
http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=11930

TotalAnarchy 08-02-2009 03:51 PM

If I understand it correctly this refers to me. :oh: I'll copy and paste the reviewer/screenshots/uploader problems to that other thread, this will give me a chance to clean up the lists here. But I have this strange feeling I didn't check for this kind of problems in the first genres (action, adventure etc). I certainly remember noticing some, but I don't see them in the lists. I'll probably do a separate check for those.

marko river 08-02-2009 06:14 PM

Well, is it a must for every game to have must try??? There are surely some that simply can't have anything appropriate in must try... As for more than 10, that is surely a problem... I'm on it

marko river 08-02-2009 06:51 PM

I fixed too many Also try for the following:
Sensible Soccer - European Champions 92-93 Edition
Bandit Kings of Ancient China
Heroes of Might and Magic (DOS)
Kings Bounty
Lords of the Realm

edit:
World at War - Stalingrad, A Mind Forever Voyaging and Sherlock Holmes - Another Bow don't have too many also try links... maybe someone did this while i was doing those games...

That was me.

Site Navigation -> Content

There you can see who edited which Game in last time.

marko river 08-02-2009 07:47 PM

I see you added some also try links to some games... Don't get me wrong, i wasn't checking what you did, but at some point i will probably go through all games on site fixing also try links in way i think is best. Most of these links were put by romano or some other updater using similar names or genres or tags. Since i checked every game on site before new abandonia was released, i think i can rearrange those links much better than they are now.
Offcourse, anyone can re-check those links after me...

Only thing is, i won't be able to do it soon... I'm really swamped with my personal life...

The Coop 09-02-2009 01:27 AM

I just wanted to mention that I re-uploaded my Wolf 3D review. I forgot to mention something rather important, so I added it in. The updated review should be there now.

TotalAnarchy 11-02-2009 09:32 AM

I think the link to the walkthrough for Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet doesn 't work...

Japo 11-02-2009 07:41 PM

So it seems. I myself don't know how to fix it, nor where the file has gone. Anyone?

EDIT: No wait, I found how to fix it. :wall: But I need the file (walkthrough), it's lost on my side AFAIK.

Does anyone have the file? Marko?

Dave 11-02-2009 08:17 PM

I've sent a PM to him, waiting his answer.

marko river 12-02-2009 07:16 PM

Uhm.... it is going to take a while... I'm not even sure that walkthrough on the site was mine although i supplied one... i remember it was strange to me when game was uploaded because i wrote my own walkthrough and Kosta uploaded different one...

anyway, i can't check do i have one in next few days... will do after few days if still needed...

The Coop 14-02-2009 04:46 AM

I've just uploaded the review and screenshots for Thexder.

In the meantime however I deleted the link, there was no point since it's broken. Once we have a walkthrough again we can add it.

Think I'll write a review for Prince of Persia sometime in the future.

Next: Prince of Persia 2

Acethor 17-03-2009 03:08 PM

Some more annoying stuff I found... :wall:

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/14...ization+1.html - broken extras

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/79...indows%29.html - the boxshots are for HOMM II and its kinda weird cause HOMM (this windows version) actually has its own box cover.. so this should be changed.

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/42...nd+Humans.html - no Must Try games

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/23052/Amazon.html - something really queer going on with the extras... theres 3 all called the same thing and one of them is broken. The other two... are both exactly the same although they have different "game_extra" numbers.

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/52...other+Bow.html - broken extra and ... 2 screenshots only

Thats it for now... I'll be sure to post more later if I find more.

Luchsen 17-03-2009 04:31 PM

The Amazon extra issue is nothing queer, just a consequence of extras bug #1 and #2. Well, they aren't connected to the game, so we can't do anything.

[edit] Or maybe we can. *goes rustlin'* [/edit]

Acethor 19-03-2009 09:14 AM

Have you ask Kosta to replace this review. I am just curios.
I know Kosta is a speaker in a favour of copyleft.
I am asking about fair play :)

TotalAnarchy 03-04-2009 02:17 PM

You should take into account that stub reviews replacing is a decision taken by the administration, and not by me. If Kosta has left and doesn't even try to log just once from time to time, it means he has complete confidence that the staff he left in charge is capable of taking tough decisions, such as this one.

Also, this was a necessary decision in order to assure the progress of Abandonia as a whole. If I was a guy who discovered metalcraft, it's almost my duty to implement this invention replacing this way the previous tools made from stone, because it increases the overall quality of life of the community and can give a significant advantage over adversaries.

Romano 03-04-2009 02:41 PM

No problem. No problem at all :D
I do not want to disturb you.
Everything you did is completely OK.
To be honest, I was trying to pay you attention and ask you, why you have double "A" in your signature.
I am an anarchist too, and I would like how much you are an anarchist!
As far so good :)

Romano 03-04-2009 02:44 PM

I don't know why I can not edit my own post???
I am sorry for all grammar and spelling mistakes!
My English is disastrous in any way :D

TotalAnarchy 03-04-2009 04:20 PM

Well, if we reached this point, I'll have to say that I'm not an anarchist in practice, but an anarchist in soul. I do consider anarchy a superior socio-economic system, but I also know that it can be adopted by the masses only after capitalism finishes its cycle.

I'm convinced that society self-reglates itself and doesn't need impulses from individuals. Also we all know that the change of the system is first done in fact, and only then we need a revolution to change it "de jure". The fact is anarchy is not viable in our current society, nor is communism.

Generally, what I'm trying to say is that there are no real anarchists, because we live in a capitalist society. Also, mainly because of the globalisation and integration our society is currently self-directing toward a similar society, the question is: is it communism or is it anarchy?

Now why anarchy>communism? It's because communism imposes the same standard, norm to all people. That's useless if we take into account the human nature. He always wants more. What if I don't want only bread, I want some oranges too, for example? Here anarchy has a complete advantage...

Well those are my thoughts. I'm not an active anarchist ->I don't want to break windows and steal TVs. That doesn't change a thing. And if you're wondering, wherever individuals are involved, it always ends up being corrupted.

Concerning the others we can't do a thing at the moment. We don't have the "Technical Supplement" for Civ to replace the link directing to the main page. We left it as it is until we find it. The other problems - we've just deleted them. We don't have the necessary replacements (the HOMM boxshots and some other extras linking to the main page).

Try looking for UFO: Enemy unknown - it was called XCOM in the States.

I have it and the second, the underwater one, and the new one (which requires cd image).

Shame they're all No Go's... eh?

They can all be bought on Steam. :)

I don't know. They named it this way because it contains two versions of the game: one for men and the other one for women. The gameplay and the situations are different in those versions. The thing is the versions didn't have separate names. They were both named Alter Ego, so practically it would be better if we remove the "man and woman" part.

But I'll let you decide :sneaky:

TotalAnarchy 24-04-2009 01:12 PM

The stub reviews written initially by Kosta for Wolfenstein 3D, Flashback (DOS) and Desert Strike - Return To The Golf were replaced with new ones. Thank you, The Coop, for writing the new detailed reviews.

You can check the old stub reviews in this thread.

We should have made two entries, if you ask me. They're not the same really - we could have used the same review in principle but different screenshots.

Luchsen 27-04-2009 05:07 PM

I second that!

There was a mistake within the archive as well. I played the male version, and at the age of 14 I noticed that I am a woman - and yes, that is a mistake, I checked it...

Bouncing Babies has a pretty short review(5 lines long)(I would love to write a review this :whistling:)

Autoduel has no must try games at the bottom, I can't really think of any games that are like it besides one freeware game.

Bullys Sporting Darts. No must try games at the bottom. this was the only game I could find after five minutes of searching(Hey... they both have darts ok? lol)Superstar Indoor Sports and this game are the only games that are alike(They both have darts...)

It might be worth mentioning that the downloads have the folder names backwards.
ie male is female, female is male...

The original floppy had a label that stated which one it was - It was great, because you could boot off the game disc and not have to swap discs!

I think that here, the alter ego is also another sex.
There's also a web-based version of the game now that's almost an exact facsimilie.
But html.

Great. Seb gave the name "Ninja Mission" I don't know why he did it. I think "Ninja Mission" was US title, and game is much more known by the name "Ninja". Not to mention that once you start the game it shows the name "Ninja", so it is surely better this way.

The Bard's Tale 3 - The Thief of Fate:
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/93...f+of+Fate.html

At first glance, each of these reviews appears to be OK...until you read them back-to-back and realize that they're essentially the same review, with only one paragraph changed. Not as apparent is that they're both near-copies of the original version of the review for The Bard's Tale 1, before the Grammar Squad reworked it. That review is fine now, but the reviews for Destiny Knight and Thief of Fate need to be rewritten, IMHO.

marko river 14-07-2009 08:29 AM

All three games were added same day because it was something special, like special date. Games were protected at the time and Seb wrote all three reviews. He used almost same review since those are similar games, but I guess those could be rewritten, but I don't think it's priority...

Japo 14-07-2009 05:28 PM

They should have a proper review each. Just add II and III into the list of games needing review replacement.

... Gdoc updated.

Bouncing Babies and Pole Position reviews replaced. Thanks for your efforts, A12Alex and bob-satan. :)

I'd like to re-review:
Pinball Dreams
(I still remember about Prehistorik)

and make screenshots to:
Quest for Glory - So You Want To Be A Hero VGA
Pinball Dreams
Scorched Earth
Dizzy - Prince of the Yolkfolk

No, it's not updated. But anyways, bob-satan talked about screenshots, not review.

marko river 14-08-2009 03:57 PM

You're right... anyway, I remembered that Scorch wasn't in the list...

All mentioned screenshots uploaded, Pinball Dreams and a bonus one: Space Invaders reviews also uploaded.
Prehistorik is still waiting :)

There is a small problem with Pinball Dreams screenshots - I haven't found where to change resolution in game after selecting a table. Default is 640x350, that is why i uploaded original and resized shots to this game. If anyone knows how to change it I can make some new :)

My next job will be screenies for:
- Tetris
- Sensible Soccer
- Michael Jordan in Flight
- Pushover
- Operation Wolf
- Dyna Blaster

The Fifth Horseman 23-08-2009 06:16 AM

The site automatically displays the screens at 320x200, regardless of their actual size and aspect ratio.

Luchsen 23-08-2009 01:31 PM

Not for the screenshot quiz.

you can always add a black border in order to keep the 1,6 website ratio. or cut something from corners?

Uploaded new archive "screenshots with border" containing all of the previous one resized and original size. So little pictures, so many choices :)

You could just say that the player should read the instructions at the bottom instead of immediately choosing a table. ^_^

FIXED.

Marko you are an updater why didn't you just remove it yourself from the game page? O.o

marko river 24-09-2009 03:41 PM

It wasn't my point to simply fix it, I was wandering how did that get there in first place... You can't select transaltions... Perhaps if you switch languages while editing... Anyway, I left it there for explanation... Oh never mind :3:

Luchsen 24-09-2009 06:19 PM

That's because the provisonal translation solution makes a game entry for every translation.

  • Michael Jordan in Flight

Done and :onftp: :
  • Operation Wolf
  • Sensible Soccer
  • Tetris
For the last one - Tetris during resizing, I've noticed that the resized pictures still looks blurry, so I've prepared also resized version with just removing every second line and column:
http://bobsat.tar.pl/abd/tetris_004.png http://bobsat.tar.pl/abd/tetris_004a.png
Please choose, which one looks better.

Dyna Blaster is not easy to create better pictures as the resolution in game is 256x232 - anyone have an idea about resizing/adding borders to these to make these look good? Everything I've tried make these pictures blurry.

An finally I moved forward with stub replacement to Prehistorik. It can be found in needing reviews.

TotalAnarchy 02-10-2009 06:57 PM

The first one for Tetris looks decent, no need to slaughter the screens.

For Dynablast, 2 options: either adding borders after resizing it to have the height 200, or using PrintScreen and working on that.

Perhaps someone else could check them (if they work, please post the Adobe Reader version used).

Thanks. :)

No problem for me. I thinks the Error lies not in Adobe Reader but in Browser you used. :mhh:

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 11:41 AM

I downloaded them to my hard drive and tried Adobe directly (both clicking on the file, and then opening Adobe and loading from the menu), so the browser wasn't involved in the viewing.

Am using version 5.0, although it's never failed to open anything yet (which is why I haven't upgraded). Even tried a fresh reboot (Win98SE) and received the same error on all files.

If I may ask, what Adobe version are you using?

Paco 04-10-2009 11:51 AM

@DOS then did you tried viewing with the Browser? The Download may be borked. i use Adobe Reader v9.1.3.

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 12:05 PM

Looked at them in a hex editor, they start with "%PDF 1.3" and end with %%EOF (plus hex OD OA), which is the same ending as other working PDF files.

Other working files I checked start with "%PDF 1.4", but changing that from 1.3 to 1.4 still gives the same error. :dunno:

??

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 12:15 PM

Ah sorry...

No, I'm on 28k dialup and it would take a really long time to load (one is over 8mb). Plus the browser just dloads them to a temp dir and opens them with Adobe anyway.

Surely all three aren't "borked"... :dunno:

TotalAnarchy 04-10-2009 12:24 PM

Before uploading, I checked them all. I'd recommend trying a newer version of Adobe Reader for now.

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 12:30 PM

I'm downloading the smallest one again. If it still gives an error I'll probably just forget about it, since there's a lot of good info in the game's forum discussion (and I'm not through playing High Seas Trader anyway).

Thanks for the help. :)

Acethor 04-10-2009 12:35 PM

I know this error. I believe it occurs when the file is fragmented, or downloaded only partially. Did you check the file sizes to make sure you dl'ed the whole thing?

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 12:41 PM

Yeah. :(

Also did a binary file compare on the repeat download (the map), and it's identical to the previous one. And of course gives the same error.

_r.u.s.s. 04-10-2009 01:09 PM

right click the link and select "save as"

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 01:24 PM

That's how I downloaded them (and most everything else) in Firefox. As mentioned, it's no big deal. Will probably have to upgrade my reader some day.

Thanks. :)

[EDIT] Btw, if mods want to move (or remove) these posts, I certainly understand. Since the files are evidently ok, all I've done is clutter up the thread.

marko river 20-10-2009 01:41 PM

Is review for 1-0 Soccer Manager considered as stub review?

TotalAnarchy 20-10-2009 01:50 PM

Nope.

marko river 21-10-2009 06:23 PM

I've been messing with some "Also try"s for some arcade platform games. Just to state here...

esgmaster 09-11-2009 09:54 PM

Didn't know where else to put this, but the review for Celtic Tales - Balor of the Evil Eye the first which is misspelled.

marko river 09-11-2009 10:24 PM

It's possible, it is long review, my English was much worse back then and it wasn't checked. I did some quick changes, fixing the worst parts. It may need few more changes...

marko river 04-12-2009 06:27 AM

Is Supaplex considered as stub review? It is very short, but provides description and information about the game...

TotalAnarchy 04-12-2009 09:17 AM

Hard to say. Why do you ask? We can separate it in paragraphs so that it looks better.

marko river 04-12-2009 11:41 AM

I was unsure should it be replaced or not. I wanted to translate the review, but I was confused. It is very short, but has enough info... I would say it is good enough to stay, with exception of the first line. Game is not strategy, but reviewer is free to state that he sees strategy as the biggest role in the game. However, it is clear that Kosta put the game in Strategies, which may be the case back then, but has now changed. I don't think we should leave it that way

TotalAnarchy 04-12-2009 11:46 AM

I'm not sure if we can edit games without problems now, so I'll put a reminder here.

Reviews in need of editing:
-Supaplex (stating the genre in the first line)
-Syndicate Wars (mentioned in the review wrong year of release)

marko river 04-12-2009 04:02 PM

I also have to ask do we consider reviews for Raptor and Xenon 2 as stub reviews. They are also very short but have some info. No mistakes in those two, but both are really just a few lines, still having some basic info, so I'm not sure...

As for mistakes, Little big Adventure is from 1994. Review says so, mobygames says so, I remember playing it in 1994 also, but it says 1995 instead.

Yes, but in search moby also shows 1994. Don't believe moby, believe me (wiki) :p

Also, just to say, LSL5 review is done as well as screenshots, but I thought that we have new bug which prevent us from editing screenshots. And I'll cover both review and shots for LSL6.

And I remember that bob wrote interesting review for Prehistorik. Can't remember where it is exactly. It is written in first person, as if the main character is talking about the game, I liked the idea.

Reminder for updaters and me: change Shogun listingshot.

Luchsen 12-03-2010 01:48 PM

Why?

TotalAnarchy 12-03-2010 01:58 PM

It's taken from James Clavell's Shogun. You can see the original titleshot among the screens on the gamepage. :\

Luchsen 12-03-2010 02:02 PM

The title screen is displayed immediately before the alternative one you mention. Decrease your cycles and you will see it. :)

Oh, I see, it's good then. :\

ianphillips2347 30-03-2010 09:06 PM

Raptor - Call of the Shadows - 11 Must try games listed.
Sand Storm - Only 3 screen shots.
Sky Shark - 'Amiga link' takes you to Flying Shark (I'm not sure if its the same game just a different name).
Manhole - No must try games listed.
Miner 2049er - Only 3 screen shots.
Ms. Pac-Man - Only 3 screen shots.
Pang - No must try games listed.
Paperboy - Only 3 screen shots.
Smurfs, The - Very short review (nine lines).
Titus the Fox - To Marrakech and Back - Very short review (ten lines).
Trolls - 12 Must try games.
Agent USA - No must try games listed.
Alpha Waves - No must try games listed.

TotalAnarchy 19-09-2010 04:36 AM

Hi TA.

I'll Do Test Drive 2 - The Duel.

One question, Could a link to the mac version be added.
http://macintoshgarden.org/games/test-drive-ii-the-duel

TotalAnarchy 19-09-2010 03:01 PM

Currently the site is set to link only to LemonAmiga and Lemon64. We have no agreements with MacintoshGarden. Frankly, when DOSBox can be used on MACs too, I don't really see the point... although preserving all versions of a game is indeed a good thing.

That's got nothing to do, it's about preserving all the versions as you say. AFAIK old Mac games can't be run without an emulator in the newer Mac OS, just like in Windows.

replaced screenshots for Leisure Suit Larry 5 - Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work! and moved them to Done. I kept old screens just in case. They were in wrong resolution. In case they are no longer needed, I will delete them.

Replacement review is in the grammar, I guess I should wait for the final version.

I'd take Prehistorik 2. Hmm... so many memories... :)

I've finished the new review for Prehistorik 2. I just forgot to post since then :)
Should I send it in a PM?

Phazek

If you don't have FTP access, you can send it to me in a PM. I will then send it to Grammar Squad. :)

Is Dune 2 considered as valid review?

edit: same question for Even More Incredible Machine

TotalAnarchy 11-01-2011 04:24 PM

Dune II is ok, barely. But i guess EMIM can be considered a stub.

marko river 11-01-2011 11:07 PM

Now that I think of it, it doesn't really need longer review since the game is same as the first part. Perhaps only adding a link to the first part in the first sentence where the first part is mentioned and separating last two sentences into another paragraph.

3D World Boxing - Wrong information?

For 3D World Boxing, the review mentions "...The controls suck!...This is largely due to the fact that you can't set up the keys to control him..." Overall, the review is positive about most aspects of the game but lists the controls as a major downfall. Since DOSBox -.074 contains a KeyMapper, this problem could possibly no longer be an issue. Could something like
"ABANDONIA UPDATE ADDENDUM: The current version of DOSBox -.074 contains a Keymapper which allows customized configuration of the keyboard controls (see DOSBox manual for complete details). We would strongly urge anyone who may be discouraged from downloading this game because of player control to keep in mind it is now possible to reconfigure your own control commands using DOSBox."
Just a thought...
Ohne

Addendum:A Mind Forever Voyaging has somewhat of a similar issue. The review mentions the need for WinFrotz to run the game whereas when I tested it, it works just fine in DOSBox with no modifications to anything.

Dragons - A Challenge in Chivalry has no "must try" games. i suggest adding Arkanoid.

Lulu_Jane 12-02-2011 11:45 AM

done :)

Finn MacCool 13-04-2011 10:31 AM

Alien Virus has no "must try" games. i'm not sure what to add though.

Lulu_Jane 13-04-2011 10:43 AM

How about Guilty and Innocent Until Caught as a start? :)

EDIT: Maybe also Alien Trilogy.

marko river 15-04-2011 07:29 AM

Well, IUC and Guilty are a little humorous, Alien Virus is a more serious, perhaps even horror. Alien Trilogy is shooter, not adventure.

My first suggestions would be Gateway and Gateway 2.

Finn MacCool 06-06-2011 09:50 AM

Alpha Waves has no "must try" games (and doesn't show up in the puzzle category for some reason). i suggest adding Blockout.

3D puzzle platformer vs. Tetris in 3D. I don't know, maybe they do have some similarities...:dunno:

Maybe Head Over Heels, Treasure Trap, etc... (puzzle games with isometric view) would be a better choice.

Finn MacCool 07-06-2011 09:09 AM

that may well be. i found it to be quite hard to find something even vaguely similar to alpha waves...

anyway, here's an easier case:
Manhole has no "must try" games. i suggest adding Lemmings and Lemmings 2 - The Tribes.

Paco 05-02-2012 09:15 PM

provided new screen for KGB aka Conspiracy, Kings Quest 1 VGA and Fields of Glory.

More are on the Way.

Finn MacCool 06-02-2012 11:16 PM

Defender of Boston - The Rock Island Mystery has no "must try" games. i suggest adding Uninvited (Windows).

Paco 19-02-2012 11:32 AM

provided better screens for these games:

- Civilization
- Leisure Suit Larry 1 EGA
- Enclosure
- Loom
- Transport Tycoon

Finn MacCool 20-02-2012 11:08 PM

i'm not quite sure if this is supposed to go here, but the review on the english Command & Conquer page appears to be in portuguese.
edit: or at least it is when i go there via the link from the Command H.Q. page.

Dave 20-02-2012 11:49 PM

The review is ok:
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/37...20Conquer.html

But it looks like the Related Games box is having some problems lately.
Thanks for the report :)

This is now fixed. All Links leads to english Pages and not to other Languages-Pages.

Paco 04-03-2012 11:50 AM

TotalAnarchy 23-03-2012 10:57 AM

Possible Must tries for the newly added Battles of Destiny game, are the "Empire" strategy games.
