Have you ever made a wish and had it come true? Well, if not, that power is now granted to you in Infocom's 1985 text-based title, Wishbringer. Upon entering this wacky fantasy world you will notice that things are not always as they seem in the quaint little town of Festeron. From the moment you begin the game, your irritatingly irate boss starts ordering you around, and you should quickly realize that you are in for a very bad day.
Your task as the town's postal worker is to deliver a strangely addressed envelope to Ye Olde Magick Shoppe. That is, if you can manage to find it before it closes. Be sure to check the postal map included in the manual files often, as it can help you orient yourself in the game world. And as with all text-based adventures, be sure to pay attention and save often. Otherwise, you're in for a rude awakening in the form of dying and/or finding yourself in the position of being unable to continue the game. And after you deliver that envelope and leave Ye Olde Magick Shoppe, watch out - finding your way around sure can be tricky in the dark.
Wishbringer has a rich and unusual fantasy-based storyline. The traditional themes can be found side-by-side with a few original additions: Platypuses, anyone? Considered a beginner's text adventure, the game is a short-but-sweet jaunt into a beautiful dreamscape haunted by twisted nightmares brought to life by the presence of a mysterious evil. There are actually various ways of ridding the town of this evil, either by the magic of the Stone of Dreams, or by your own ingenuity. The choice is up to you.
Be sure to look for important objects that can aid you in your tasks along the way. Examine everything you can for clues, and pick up everything that's not nailed down. The peculiar characters in the game will talk to you whether you want them to or not, so you don't need to worry about missing any vital interactions along the way, as long as you explore the town thoroughly. Don't dawdle too long in frightening places, or wait around to find out if there's a parade coming if you hear strange footsteps.
So, do you have the power to make wishes come true?
