Great game. Even though I played Eye of the Beholder a lot over ten years ago I never got hold of Lands of Lore. I'm happy it didn't disappoint.

One question though. I have trouble training up the mage skill (not that there is any problem finishing the game anyway). My character gets to level 4 easily after using the wand of fireballs, but then it gets very hard. I threw fireballs on great orcs for 2 hours and only gained one level on my main character. Does anyone have any hints?

The rogue skill is a bit tough as well. I got them all to level 5 by shooting arrows and throwing things for a while, but after that my atempts to gain experience seemed futile. Is there an easier alternative?

For the rogue skill, shooting with the crossbow "Valkyrie" helps, but after level 5 it can take quite some time. I also think that the stronger the monster / enemy that you hit, and the more damage you cause with a hit, the more experience you get.

As with magic, after level 4 you might want to find a next, stronger spell than fireball, using which will increase the experience you get after hitting someone with it. Also, the higher strength of a spell you cast (from 1 to 4), the more experience you'll get after you hit something. Spell strength 1 doesn't give much, while you can earn good experience even with the basic spark on strength 4 (if you cause good damage, see below).
The experience earned is also affected by how much damage you cause with the right spell. The more damage, the more experience. Some enemies are more resistant against certain spells while vulnerable against others, you'll have to experiment there. For great orcs you might want to try Lightning or Freeze instead of Fireball, though, I think they aren't very affected by fireballs. They're very vulnerable against Mist of Doom.

No short-cuts, just hard work. Allright then. I guess I'll take your advice and experiment with spells, trying to figure out the most efficient combination.

And yes, the crossbow Valkyrie is wonderful indeed, hits every time which is useful throughout the entire game.

I've finally taken the plunge and decided to dedicate myself to some of these old games I've dabbled in before, and being a huge fan of Dungeon Master I decided to start with Lands of Lore.

Well, it's rather excellent, isn't it? Very tough though! I haven't been so challenged by a game like this for a long time. Just the constant pressure from monsters... gives me some of the great tension I used to get playing DM back in the day. low on health, out of food and water, stuck in some dangerous part of the game. Poison is a major pain!

I'm only a short way in. Currently battling my way through the first proper dungeon. Getting spun around, chased down dead ends and generally playing in a constant state of panic.

It's super :amused:

My trouble is that i get black screen and the game freezes even before i get started. I chose charadter and when the king tells me to meet him in the palace this is where the game freezes. Anyone knows what to do? ...anyone:(

Ahoj,

I ran setup in dosbox, chose Soudblaster Pro and in Dosbox started the game. The only change there was that I could see a flash of the next screen (guards B4 the castle, I guess).
What did I do wrong?

Download the CD version (with full speech) from here (http://www.jucaushii.ro/gamespace_865_downloads_Lands_of_Lore_The_Throne_o f_Chaos.html), and see if that helps eventually.

I seem to have gotten myself into a dead-end situation. I'm in the Urbish Mines, I've dropped down a pit into a tiny L-shaped room with a pressure pad. Putting an object on the pad opens two pits, and when I drop down either I end up in a room full of flying snakes which I can't possibly defeat. There seems to be no way out of or back up from the L-shaped room :oh:

Also, I can't find Paulson, so I'm still in a party of two. I read that he's supposed to be around the Mines somewhere but I haven't seen him at all. I hope I'm not going to have to restart!

Capo

Well, you have to defeat the flyng snakes but without Paulson is pretty impossibile.

Maybe this guide will help:

I actually did the same thing on my first ever real game. (After just poking about and not understanding the game - I was 9 at the time). From this I learned the very valuable information of always having multiple savegames. Anyways, it's been a year since I played this game, but I think I recall the following about the room.

1. You're not supposed to have paulson at this point - and yes, it is very possible to complete.

2. The snakes will appear out of 'holes in the wall', (you will notice this by a different graphic than the average stonewalls in the mines). Obviously if you stand next to theese holes, nothing can spawn. So stand here and fight them all of, then try to sleep.

3. You can change difficulty settings mid-game, in options. Enemies are set to Normal by default, but you can change this to Easy/Wimpy or whatever it is called.

4. The "Freeze" spell is very usefull in this room, if you got the MP to use it. Since it might kill off as much as 4 of them at the ti

5. You can always try running. Although I am not sure how easy this is, but there should be a lever on one of the walls. Get a mappack to find out which. Beware though that there are 1 or two of the walking fireplaces (That's what I called them when I was 10) - whatever the stone-thingys that drop the bloodstone are really called.

That's my tips for the day, it should be totally possible, but if your characters are not trained enough, yes this can be hard. Hope you manage to fight through though =)

Incase anyone randomly drops by and wants to check this game out in its entirety, I've copied and pasted the simple steps from the Lands of Lore facebook group which show how to play the full game.

Download Lands of Lore I here:
http://files.filefront.com/Lands+of+Lorezip/;7088130;/Lands_of_Lore.zip

1. download the lands of lore 1 file and unzip it into a folder

2. download and install VDM Sound: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=20091&use_mirror=easynews&filename=VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi&61644452

3. go into the folder where you extracted the lands of lore files. Right click on setup.exe and select "run with VDMS."

4. Select sound blaster for every option. Exit setup.

5. Right click on LANDS (the batch program file) and select "run with VDMS." Congrats, you're finished!

And I hope sabreman got out of that avian worm place ok. I always use my fire wand at that point. Hard stuff.

Does any one know of any way to get this game to play on a mac? I'm currently using the Radnor program on my mac and it's allowed me to play a bunch of my old favorite DOS games (which I still own but can never get to work!) but this was a CD-ROM game and I'm not sure if there's any way to get it to run on my mac with an emulator program. I'd love to revisit it though if possible, I always thought it was a fun game, and so pretty too, even though I never beat it.

A Mac port of DosBox should work fine, for example this one: http://boxer.washboardabs.net/

If you have a PowerPC performance will be a bit poor (due to pure software emulation), but it might be good enough for Lands of Lore. Intel Macs should perform fine.

I had an interesting bug while playing version 1.02. I caused some damage to the giant liazard near Lora. Then I saved the game when it was round the corner so I couldn't see it. And when I loaded this game there was a rat instead of a liazard :oh:
Maybe it's because of it's low health level?

And I really want to know how do the Whisper Cloak and the Silent Sandals affect? How to use them properly?

Capo, do you really think Whisper Cloak and Silent Sandals are usefull in White Tower? I equipped my characters with these items, one item per character (+Shield of Stealth), and didn’t notice any difference. I also equipped one character with three items and made him active, and I got the same result. It seems these items are quite useless.

@Elena: This is what a walktrough says about:

White Tower:
- You might want to consider using the Whisper Cloak/Shield of Stealth/Silent Sandals in White Tower Lv.3. Since ghosts also walk through walls, you can use these items better here. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the effects of these items. It might decrease the 'line of sight' of your enemies (thus making it more useful against ghosts) and/or increase your hit/evade rate.

Anyway the Vaelan's cube is far more usefull.

P.S:Age 10 ???

Yes, yes, I came to the same conclusion )))

By the way, Whisper Cloak helped me to solve a riddle of a mysterious niche in Dungeons. It’s the niche where items disappear. I put Whisper Cloak there and found it in a niche in Castle Level 2. If I put some common item there, I wouldn’t be able to identify it.

Anyway the Vaelan's cube is far more usefull.
I think the best solution is wands of fireball, Witch Doctor in Swamp sells them. You don’t have the Vaelan’s Cube in White Tower. You have it only in Cimmeria Castle.

P.S:Age 10 ???
Capo, why not? Just kidding. I’m 300.

The series was enjoyable, but as I recall, far too linear. That was the one thing that always killed them for me.

Elena
06-09-2008, 08:52 AM
I’m not disappointed with linearity, I like linear games too. But I don’t like a role system, it’s too strict and scanty. You can’t choose your party characters (except your hero), they are imposed. All of them have the same abilities. I think it’s not very interesting, when all members of your party are identical. And to my taste magic is too primitive, even no one defensive spell. And I DON’T LIKE the Light spell is missing. Most of my journey in Draracle’s Cave and Urbish Mines was in the dark! This game is not among my favorite games for the reasons given above, I like it very much though. A story, quests, secrets, monsters, NPCs are wonderful. And it’s beautiful :)

Is there some full list of weapons, where the costs are given? It's interesting to know which sellers give only half of the original price for some weapons.

Elena
21-09-2008, 07:30 PM
AFAIK prices for weapon are equal everywhere. Only Fletcher in City of Yvel pays you a higher price for crossbows. You have to “sell” items in Swamp usually. The magic stone head always gives you 60 crowns, even for a stone.

Shopkeepers in Swamp will pay half-price until you return a ritual mask to Gorkha Chieftain.

One engine feature that might be of use to someone...

My usual obsessive skill training involves killing monsters and waiting for them to respawn, over and over again. The cavemen in the draracle caves, the bees in opinwood, the orcs in the yvel forest, the imps in the mines, the ghosts in the tower...

It looks like the game monitors the amount of monsters you killed, and will decrease the spawn amount at certain points. If you continue further, the monsters will stop respawning entirely. This also goes for monsters that always spawn when you do a certain action (push button, step on plate, step on spinner square in draracle caves to spawn cavemen, ...).

If Electronic Arts had any brains, they'd port Lands of Lore to Nintendo DS - it's the perfect game to be ported: it's bright, colourful, yet is fun and still feels fresh. Orcs & Elves was pretty weak so why not make a PROPER EOTB type game?

The CD version is really worth it too! Westwood games had a very rare quality of voice actors at the time. While most other games had really terrible actors, Westwood already managed to drag on some top names like Patrick Steward. It made a great game even better!

The game also runs fantastic on VDMsound. The Lands of Lore facebook group has a step-by-step walkthrough on how to set up LOL1 and play it without needing a CD or anything (for the CD version too). I don't remember the specifics but the game is hosted on filefront and there's a batch file you have to configure and then the game runs flawlessly.

VDMSound lost interest when DOSBox became good enough to run practically every game. Due to the nature of LCD screens, VDMSound makes games look fuzzy while DOSBox, using DDRAW as output, allows for perfectly sharp images and that's a lot more appealing to me :)

Get a front end like D-FEND, from the DOSBox site (go to 'utilities'), it makes running DOS games with DOSBox so much easier. Mouse clicks and a GUI interface is a lot better than commands like 'mount c c:\' !!!

Drive mounting can be automated through DOSBox.conf.
Norton Commander works in DOSBox just fine, and you really don't need a more complex GUI than that.

I much much prefer Dosbox Game Launcher:

http://members.quicknet.nl/blankendaalr/dbgl/

It's updated frequently and is even made to work with the beta/CVS versions of DOSBox - it already supports all features in the upcoming DOSBox 0.73 for example. Also, DBGL is easier to get used to as long as you know how DOSBox works.

Finally! I did it to pass the guard's password protection! All I had to do was to give him some silver coins and then kill him!.
Im kidding. ^-^

I was stuck in there. I saw the forum some days ago, but I still couldn't find the exact word.... since yesterday. I was reading another page!!!
I'll give an example about my last confussion. NEVER do what I did, never try this:

So, what I was looking was this(it's still an example):
"Page 4, line 3, word 4"

Page 4

Here, I used to think that what is in bold was the password!... And So was it that I got rejected like 5 times from the castle... And once again, to run it by DOSBox.. :noworry:

INSTEAD: This is what you should do(In case there is someone else just like me who mistakes everything!).:whops:

Finding your way in the dark
Dungeons and underground caverns are often dark. This can
make exploring tricky. You will want to find a lantern as soon
as possible. Lanterns automatically provide light when you
enter dark areas. As the oil in the lantern is used up, the
lantern will begin to dim. You will need to find oil for you
lantern if it runs low. Left-click on your lantern to see how
much oil remains.

Money purse
Silver crowns are the standard unit of currency in Gladstone.

Page 4

As I was writing what was first bold, I didn't notice that That page belonged to page 5 actually. So, here its underlined, bold, and in italics what the real password is.

I have to admit it, it was stupid of me to make such a terrible mistake. But sometimes we find on books that the page number is in the top right corner, right??

Yesterday I made it to pass through the castle, and I felt alived. I felt so stupid since then. So this is why I explain it quite long, for avoiding any possible doubt.

Defeating them is a bit hard but if you don't destroy their nests (those specific looking things on some of the walls) that spawn new ones, they'll come out again and you'll be surrounded by them, especially if you rest to heal life and mana. You can destroy their nests with fireballs.

Nope, you need all of the yellow pyramid keys to open the coffin of King Richard later on, and one of the pyramids is kept with Paulson, so you need him. i got so pissed back then, i played this game for a few days and before the final door i managed to throw a dagger into a trigger button, which caused a hole to appear. a hole that needed to be passed. and well, i could not un-press the button with anything anymore, and i also resaved my game, i was so pissed, it was the most annoying thing to happen when i ever played any rpg

This snake ist a quite strong and nasty "magic" attack from the ghosts there, an is always a sign that they're coming towards the group. It is usually a good idea to bring the Vaelan's cube with you to the Tower level 3 and using it on the ghosts hurts them badly while regenerating your mana points, which you can use to heal the party. You also can do good damage to them with the emerals swords, much better than with normal weapons.
The best idea is to move quickly through that level and alwas stay on guard and heal yourself. Also better set the difficulty to easy while there.

I remember... I played this game twice so far:
The first time, I took the sapphire path, but the real problem begun when I reached the swamps. I saw the first pit and fall, then I fall again till I realized it was useless. The next thing I did was to turn left, and throw a rock... and suddently I was surronded by the creatures! I killed them all till I found the shops, where it said "you killed my people"
I was like "WHAATTT?? There must be some mistake!!!".

By the second time, I had already read a walkthrough... but I hadn't understood why the emerald path was so important. Guess what? I took the sapphire path AGAIN, and then I tried to turn back to check the Emerald path.... There was none! It was gone!!... now I want to start again to feel the difference!

Anyway, a good advice.... if you just have 2 characters, save some rocks and start throwing them when an enemy appears in front of your, when you're able to attack, do so(I prefer using the keyboard) while grabbing the rocks and throwing them back to them. Its faster than you may think! Just throw them high while pressing the keyboards keys to attack!

(My posts are usually long somehow, expect that from me... but if you want the best part, read from the last parragraph to the first).

The cube that Sal mentions is very powerful in that tower. Between that and the emerald sword (For the King, for the land, for the mountains!) , you will find the white tower lot less frustrating... I played this game twice or thrice, and all of them I found some frustrating problem that prevented me from finishing it... including corrupted savegames the third time. I decided that this game wasn't for me

:no:I have spent hours trying to get the password..The old lady talks about the "Book of Lore" is that the manual? I got a copy (print out) of the original but still no luck.HOW DO I GET THE CRUCIBLE if I can't answer the question...

Are you by chance playing the normal floppy version of Lands of Lore from the main site? You might want to download the CD version from the ISO Cellar here which shouldn't have those copy protection checks, however your savegame from the floppy version wouldn't work in the CD version so you would have to start anew.

Thanks once again Scatty... I did manage to get a list of the words from the Lands of Lore discussion group which goes back to 2005? I think. and I did get the crucible but guess what...........now I cannot open the room with the altar in order to mix the elixer etc...Your suggestion about starting again may not be too far off the mark...:wall: I am sure I had all the keys now I have a bronze type one left which does not seem to fit.

Scatty

I think you get the key to the room with the altar in the basement level of the white tower, there must be a stair somewhere on the entrance level to go down there, you'll need another key to open the door to it though.
Down there you have to gather and put all the items that are circling around in the room ahead in the alcove(s) in the walls before that room.

Hey Sal, im having the exact same problem ! Ive gone thru the tower, spanked all the ghosts and got all the keys, but now that old woman wants a word from the book of lore, but it doesnt match the manual !! :( Ive tried entering all the possible words starting with the letter she gives you that are near the lines that she quotes, but nothing works ! Any ideas ??

I mean page 8 of this thread just scroll back

Not far from where you put the Dark Commander to rest is a hand symbol on the wall, there you need to use his glove to open the wall. There're also few other such symbols along the level, there you also need to click with the glove on them.

El Quia
11-06-2009, 01:26 AM
IRC, you "take" the card and left-click on a character portrait. Then, a spell will be cast. Like with those things that are like a piece of cloth that amkes a lot of bees attack once. Or something like that. It was a loooong time ago that I last played the game, so maybe I'm saying crap

Scatty
11-06-2009, 10:56 AM
The things you mean are wasp nests, they cast that spell with the wasps one time before disappearing, just like the cards. The same with the wands of Lightning, Fireball etc.

Sal

Yep..I finally figured out the cards and got out of the dungeon and am now on level 1 of the castle..Still haven't found Dawn..Wandering around the castle is a lot better than wandering around some of the other mazes but frankly I am getting a bit sick of the sameness of it...I think I need to go outside today into the sunshine..Oops can't do that either.. :(I've been all over level 2 of the castle and haven't found King Richard mainly I think because I don't have the keys.. I have been to Level 3 and can't seem to get a key there because when I come to the 4 alcoves which take Jewels, Armour,Weapons, Medicine..I don't have any medicine..What do I do now? I must say I am almost at the point of giving up because this whole key thing seems so pointless and ridiculous..I've got the elixir, the 4 gold keys and 2 statuettes now I am stuck.. Help!!

Scatty
16-06-2009, 01:55 PM
In those alcoves you need to place an amulet / ring for Jewels, armour should be clear enough, weapons too, as for Medicine place one of the healing plants in there such as aloe, or a Bezel Cup.

17-06-2009, 03:49 PM
Sal, unfortunately you can’t use Bezel cup or salve in this position, you need aloe or ginseng. You certainly have to replay this level. I hope you’ve saved your game before entering Castle Level 3. You can find ginseng in a chest there.

By the way, the key in this position is not for the king’s room. This key is for Scotia’s room. Don’t go to Scotia’s until you free the king - you’ll be stuck again. You must find 4 statuettes and 4 golden keys, free the king and then go to Scotia’s room.

My advice: if you’ve found Westwood stick in a chest at Castle Level 2 (this chest requires rogue skill 8), don’t use it. Keep it for Scotia.

Sal
18-06-2009, 12:43 AM
Thanks Elena,
For a while now I have felt that there are a number of variables in this game and obviously what is put in the alcoves is one of them... I did as Scatty said and put the Bezel cup in the alcove again and voila! it worked! I now have 3 statuettes and all the other stuff required to free the king BUT I can't get into the room with the last statuette..my characters have rogue skill to 3 and I can't pick the ornate lock..I went back to a game where I found the noir key and went to the lock but it won't open! I cannot open the chest containing the Westwood stick...I have to walk away from this game every so often just to get my equilibrium back!

Scatty
18-06-2009, 08:26 AM
To pick that lock you need rogue level of 5 or better. There's a battle axe that increases the rogue level by one, and there's also one amulet that increases it, if you don't have both I'm afraid you'll have to re-start the game.

Elena
18-06-2009, 10:19 AM
Scatty, yes, axe Master and Jade necklace.

Sal, you can increase your rogue’s skill if you have enough patience. There is a button in the south passage in Castle Level 1. Flying axes appear if you press this button. Let your rogue shoot at them and other characters heal him.

I doubt that you can get Westwood stick. My Baccata had rogue skill 6 and Jade necklace and he couldn’t open this chest. He opened it only when I had equipped him with axe Master and his rogue skill became 8.

Sal
19-06-2009, 05:20 AM

:clap:I finished the game today at 5:30pm! I did not have to restart the whole game,to get the required rogue points for Poulsen I went back to a saved game (170)at level one of the castle and picked up the axe "Master"which I had left in the room with the pits. Had to play that a few times to get out then after picking up the icon I was able to go to level 2 and open the !@#$ door to get the other icon finally.. Then it was comparatively smooth sailing as I had been over the levels before and basically knew what to expect. Thought the ending was a bit lame though.
Thanks Scatty and Elena.

Westwood games follow Electronic Arts rules which is 15 years I believe unless I'm mistaken. It's either 10 or 15. If it's 10, it's unprotected (as long as it's no longer being sold or supported. If it's 15, we'll need to wait till 2012.

I'd tell you to just get it from eBay or so - it's several CDs anyway so Abandonia can't host it.

About three years ago i was very active on this forum, because i was replaying this game yet again.

But i posted here because i somehow got the game to tilt. And it somehow showed this picture:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/1637/lolcd105zs1.png
Look at the arrows!!
It didnt know what to make of it. But it was clear that because the game crashed it somehow unlocked items westwood had designed for this game, but didnt use.

This also explains why the promotion-pictures for the games included items and other things that never appeared in the game, as this promotion picture for the games show:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/S7A87840.gif

it always annoyed me that i could not see these items, which westwood propably had made to lands of lore, when it still was shelduled to be a eye of the beholder or just the alpha or beta version of the game. But today i stumbled upon a program someone made in his spare time called WestPak2 which could go into the code at unlock all the graficks made for this wonderful game. I didnt find an answer why it was there, but i found a few other items that westwood made for this game, which the never used.
hereby i found the items again and more:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/QjR88104.png
Its a shame that im good at using this programme, because this output-sheet of all the item-animations do lack because of some pallete or something. But look at the things that never appereared in this game. There is the arrow, which i mentioned. But also a helmet, which was never used (number 2 from the right in the second row from the top). Also you can see a cloak that never appeared in the game. Beside the head-medichine for king richard appears a gem that i dont remember appeared in the game (but it did appear in the kyrandia game). Also in the second row from the bottom you can see three kinds of drinks/potions that NEVER appeared in the game, only a blue (for magic) and red (for health) potion appeared in this game. Westwood must have planned something else with that orange, yellow and green potions :hypno:

i tried to save the animations as single png-pictures, but they are small, so you have to zoom in to see them:
a skull cape never used:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/yyF88981.png
a blue ring, never used:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/CfN89046.png
a cape-armor thingee never used:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/yNT89033.png
The arrow never used, but was it ammo or just one item?
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/DRl89157.png
and the green potion, used for???
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/Ntp89169.png

also i saw in the demo for this game (which someone put on youtube) also showed that originally Dawn would join your party in the game and fight scotia:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cWQ_MZiFMw
i found the animation for her head in the party:
http://imageshack.dk/imagesfree/gw689364.gif

When i find these things i get so curious to how the beta and alpha versions of the games had looked like :omg:

This game will crash in DOSBox 0.73 (apparently it ran fine on the previous version.) I did some browsing at the official DOSBox forum, and found out (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=21798) that the game will not crash when cputype is set to 386.

Alternatively, one could use an official patch that fixes this along with other bugs. The patch can be found here (http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=&sys=pc&file=lolp123.zip&ref=ps). :) I would recommend the Abandonia staff to update the version available here using that patch.

So I've got all the keys, statuettes, etc that I need but I'm afraid I messed up big time. I'm to the corner of the Castle Level 2 where there are 2 buttons, one that opens a pit, and one that opens up a wall where I can get to Richard. Unfortunately I chose the pit button first and now I can't get to the other one. Is there a way to close it?? I keep shooting arrows at the wall but it's not getting to the button. Do I have to go back and do the whole level over again?

I've tried everything, including hex editing the savefile and removing Lora. But I guess I suck at hexing, can't get it to work..

Played this through again for the first time in a while. Ak'shel this time. Still a great game. There was a weird moment when in the Yvel woods where you get the valean cube from the big orcs they just kept coming and coming in endless numbers from the front and the back. Got killed but after reloading couldn't get the massive number of orcs to spawn again, just the small number I have previously had on my playthroughs, maybe half a dozen.

On the earlier pages I noticed an explanation how "Might" works for different player characters, but I'm not sure "Protection" was mentioned anywhere. I did some research. First of all, PCs have a (small) base bonus Protection value, whereas Paulson and Baccata have protection 0 if you remove all their stuff. The sum of the "Defense Factor" (DF) for all equipped items (see http://ethereallore.envy.nu/1stats.html for item stats) is modified by a coefficient depending on who you're playing and added to this bonus.

For my testing I played the different characters to when you get Baccata. After putting on 32 DF worth of stuff (5 helm + 5 staff + 10 leather + 12 kite shield) the displayed protection value for different characters were:

Konrad: 48
Michael: 42
Ak'shel: 41
Kieran: 32

So we can deduce that the protection values for player characters must be:

Konrad: 4 + DF * 1.375 (or 11/8)
Michael: 2 + DF * 1.25 (or 5/4, or 10/8)
Ak'shel: 1 + DF * 1.25 (practically identical to Michael!)
Kieran: DF

Kieran has protection 1 when naked, and some combinations of items do result in a protection value of DF + 1, but anyway it's not very significant.

Note that Kieran can't equip boots, losing out on 5-7 protection from that.

Also tested my end-game Ak'shel and with the best stuff, 122 DF he correctly displayed 153 protection.

If reading that got anyone intrested about numbers, here's more good stuff from the earlier pages that somebody found out, don't have to go digging for them:

HP increases on lvlup:

Fighter level
12-25 HP

Rogue level
2- 12 HP

Mage level
1-6 HP
12-25 MP
18-37 MP for Ak'shel

On "Might":

First, character's might depends on his hand's shape. Human's and thomgog's hands have might 1, mage's hand has might 3/4 , and cat's paw has only 1/2.
Second, there are bonuses for the characters:
BP - 0, M - 5, C - 2, A - 1, K - 5.
Third, there are power coefficients for them:
BP - 1, M - 3/2(1.5), C - 183/128(1.43), A - 5/4(1.25), K - 211/128(1.65).
So the formula must be
might = [[(weapon power + bonus) * hand's might] * power coefficient],
where [x] means the integer part of x.
Note that double truncation is necessary only for Ak'shel and Kieran.

Delays between swings Here are the additional data on delays. Three kinds of delays are denoted by x (delay after shot or missed blow), y (delay after the lucky blow), and z (delay after spell). The value x depends on character and his or her rogue level. Denote the x-delay at rogue levels 1-3 by x1, x-delay at levels 4-7 by x4 and x-delay at levels 8-10 by x8.

Previous data (disk version): For all characters except Kieran x1=10, x4=9, x8=7; for Kieran x1=x4=7, x8=6. For all characters y=4 and z=8.
This was checked only at ferocious difficulty level.

New data (CD version): At ferocious level everything remains the same, but at normal level some of the delays are greater: For all characters except Kieran x1=12, x4=10, x8=8, for Kieran x1=8, x4=7, x8=6. Values of y and z remain constant.
Delays at wimpy difficulty level look the same as at normal.

It is possible that CD and disk version have the equal delays, but I have not checked it yet. And I'm going to obtain nightmare level delays as well.

I do not know why the x-delays are shorter at harder difficulty level. Probably the monsters' delays wane much faster than characters' if you set the harder level, so the reason was to make the difference between the rogue levels smaller. In other words, at the most difficult level you can hardly feel the effect of getting 4th rogue level, and at easy or normal difficulty 4th rogue level helps your characters much.

By the way, I have improved my last result and walked through the game in 2 hours 4 minutes (level: ferocious, self-restriction: not using Vaelan's cube against the monsters).

Random drops. My latest Ak'shel playthrough got Sickle, one of the long swords, "Trouble"(good when you get it), ebony key(useless?), "Death"(worthless).

Sickle was a bugged little saber. Feeding it to the money dealing head in swamp made one of my bows and "Valkyrie" stop shooting. Probably connected to the fact that for whatever reason Sickle itself was unthrowable, it just fell to the ground instead of flying far.

Here is the list of the items you need a luck to find (at least, in disk version):
1. Horseshoe
2. Halberd (if you are loyal and do not consider Gladstone guards as "monsters")
3. Great maul

Random closing musings:

Ranged weapons are good. At least in the end game monsters do big damage and have nasty melee effects(acid, stun). It's better to attack from afar (especially castle cimmeria lvl 2). A good ranged weapon like Valkyrie or Redemption might be a good choice to replicate at the catwalk.

Michael and Konrad are similar characters, Michael has slightly more power, Konrad more protection. Michael might be "better", but with Konrad magic is easier to train right from the start, so is a good choice if one likes magic and doesn't want to grind orcs one lvl 1 spark at a time with Michael.

Ak'shel is the best mage even though the other two guys might do more damage. There's never too much mana for healing spells and it's fun to be able to actually cast those lvl 4 spells an not just see their effects from wands and aces.

Kieran is a disgusting furry.

Oh and I forgot. The best way to play the game is to use the dosbox keymapper to bind F1,F2,F3 to 1,2,3 and bind 4,5,6,7,8,9 from the keypad to a,s,d,q,w,e. This way your left hand takes care of movement and hacking at monsters while the your right hand is free to cast spells, use items and throw rocks at monsters. Rockthrowing is very effective early in the game when swinging at monsters, but gets less useful as monsters gain hitpoints throughout the game.

Hi! Great respect to you, Anonymous 1234, you've done very large work to get those tables from the past! The most of information seems to be correct. (I've obtained some of it by myself :-) )
some little comments:
'The list of the items you need a luck to find' also has to include

- Dwarvish Kite shield (white tower, 1st level, a chest you must open from the 1st trying)
- Great Sword 'Doom' - Castle Cimmeria, 1st level, 'decorative' swords.

About Heroes: Ak'shel, of course, is the best mage due to his amount of mana, but remember: Michael deals the most damage by magic (even relative to Ak'shel's) as well as by weapons - due to his largest 'power coefficient'!

About difficulty levels, I'd like to remind that there is one more level of monster might in disk version possible for use - though you need to use hex-editor to apply it. Instructions are somewhere around the pages with item, spell and delay lists...

Also I'm very glad that there is still someone left who spends his time for researching of Lands!!! =)

Aksheks freeze spell in the swamps lasts about three times longer then the other charecters.

Also how does one get into the three doors with unpickable locks in NW Yvel?

On the CD version of course

Mister Ofdoom
11-06-2010, 06:57 PM
Are you sure about freeze? Hm... interesting, I've never noticed it before.

As I can remember, there are only two unpickable doors and the third one can be picked by lockpicks. In this case you read "failed to open..." instead of "there is no way...". Just try to pick many times.
About two other doors: you can find many doors that are nailed up in Yvel. But there is one of them which you can open - planks are not nailed firmly. Find the door and inside you'll see a key...
Though there is nothing vital important beyond the doors.

lujlp

One last question, aside from the locked doors in Yvel the only othe game puzzle I wasnt able to solve was in the catwalk caverns.

Level two after you drop into the first pit how do you open the door?

And level one just before the replicator, what is the point in weighing down the three pressure plates in the trident shaped hallway that can only be reached thru the two teleporters just south of the stairway down to level 2 in the middle of the far west side?

Mister Ofdoom
12-06-2010, 11:20 AM
The door in the 2nd level of Catwalk leads to... nowhere. And there are no methods found to open it. One with a trainer programm or with hex editor can check it out - there's just a room 2*3 with several dark army guards inside (It seemed to me that in earlier versions there were orcs just like in Southland forest, but a bit mightier).

I also tried to deal with those plates and teleporters but I didn't find anything. And I strongly doubt someone except the game's designers knows what are they for...

Mister Ofdoom

Hey, people, I want to brag a bit :)
Several years ago Maerryji, one of the best Lands players and its puzzles researchers I know, was having fun by passing through the game as fast as he could. As I can understand, it was a way to make the game more interesting. And this is my way: I've just passed through Lands with 'additional difficulty'.
Here are some features I used if someone also has interest in making the game harder:

- monsters are ferrocious
- I broke Scotia's barrier near Yvel before I came to the White tower. So I didn't have Vaelan's cube on its 3rd level. And I also reached wand of lightning and opened 'YOU HAVE NO FAITH' door on it.
- While defending Yvel I didn't come in houses, nor exit the level. He-he, it took 7 fireball wands, some of my nervs and all healing things I had!
- I didn't use the Magic Atlas. Perhaps it still lies somewhere in Gladstone's library

- All these 'features' were on while I was passing through the game without making game saves:smile2: Well, of course, I don't count the savings I was making just before exiting game to load them exactly once.

Afterall, when the game finished I was as glad as thought it was the first time I passed it XD

Weighinhg down the two plates reached by the teleporters will open the iron bars in the middle hall but other than that I cant seem to figure it out

Since this has been an ongoing issue, I felt compelled to add my own 2 cents to it... :whistling:

My setup for LoL is that I have created an ISO image of the CD version. I boot this with MagicDisc, a tool that allows for mounting ISO images as virtual drives. So, you get a virtual CD drive with the mounted CD, as if you had the real CD loaded. It adds greatly to the speed... :)

Anyway, I don't use dosbox or anything else, I run directly from within XP. To get the sound, here is something that I got a long long time ago when HotU was still up:

/quote/
If you want to run the game under Windows 95 (or any Windows really), you
need to copy the file VWWSD.386 to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and
you'll need to add three lines to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI under the
[386Enh] section, like this:
...
[386Enh]
device=vwwsd.386 <-- These are the new lines
DMABufferSize=064 <--
WWSBufferSize=064 <--
...
Don't forget to reboot Windows BEFORE you attempt to start Lands of Lore!
The game _might_ run without this modification of Windows, but will most
probably crash, and will definately not have speech!
/unquote/

Then you do setup.exe and configure the game (soundblaster should work for most computers).

Also important, when running directly under XP, use the "Lands" Shortcut to MS-DOS to start the game, NOT Lands.bat or any of the ones you would use under DOS.

This worked for me. Glad I could play this great game, even though I had to take a 6-year break after making it to the Draracle... :)

Don't suppose there's any methods available for moving through walls on the
v1.02 cd version? Was always interested in seeing some of the hidden items and areas of this game that never made it in.

Mister Ofdoom
28-06-2010, 11:36 AM
There are two usual methods to go through the walls, both are not very fair =)

First one is to find a trainer program that allows you to do so. I've never used them though so I can't say if there is any trainer for 1.02 or not.

Second one is Hex-editing. This is relatively easy and allows you making such different things as receiving new items from nowhere, 'teleporatation' between levels, additional HP and mana and so on. It is all cheating, of course.
Here is the way how to move yourself by cells inside level:

1. Start a new game. Make a save file of it. Exit game.
2. Open a hex-editing program. Open your savefile by it (The file would have the last number of all your saves).
Remember that 09+1=0A, 0F+1=10, not 09+1=10.
3. Find the line 00000250. There must be something like
'00 00 00 00 2d 02 80 0d 80 11 04 00 00 00 1b 00'.
4. To move yourself 1 cell north, change '2d 02' to '0d 02'. The next cell is 'ed 01', the next - 'cd 01' etc.
To move yourself 1 cell east, change '2d 02 80 0d' to '2e 02 80 0e'. I don't know why is it so, but it seems to work. To move east again, change the line to '2f 02 80 0f', then '30 02 80 10'. Then, to move, for example, north, change it to '10 02 80 10'.
The same mechanism must work at any level.
5. Save changes, exit the savefile, load the game.

By the way, my version is 1.00. I don't think its savefiles look so different. Otherwise, the line like '00 00 00 00 2d 02 80 0d 80 11 04 00 00 00 1b 00' has another number, but the method still has to work.

Mister Ofdoom
28-06-2010, 11:51 AM
Also, the way to change your level is even easier:

The line is 00000260. find 'ff ff 00 00 01'.
'01' is the number of the level. Change it. Enjoy it =)

Hello,
I have a solution in which it says that in the Gorkha Swamp, I need to get the "Powder of your Mother" identified. But each time I ask the witch doctor to identify something, he always identifies the wrong one (the honey thing), and I don't have enough money for another identification. So:
Do I really need the "Powder..." identification for later? And if so, how can I get more money?
Thanks.

I'm using CD-version + 1.02d patch.

There is MT-32 option for music in Setup menu, but the game is using wrong instruments and it sounds mostly horrible when playing with Dosbox 0.73/0.74 and WinXP SP3

Is is true that the music has been designed for MT-32 in first place, so using that will produce the best possible music quality? I don't have real hardware for it, but there is emulation. How I can setup the emulation the way it plays correctly?

Speeches have some "hissing". Is this normal or config problem? Using Sound Blaster Pro emulation.

don't pick mt-32 inside dosbox if you don't have the actual hardware, it will just use your windows default midi output, really shitty

just stay with the sound blaster pro, that's the best option. about "hissing".. i'm not sure what you mean, could you record it?

@Mister Ofdoom: hey there, this is Undertaker from way back then! Nice to see you around, with fresh information too I see.

Haven't played the game in a while; when using DOSBox the game runs too choppy, and VDMSound plays the music too slowly for my taste. Time for a new machine I guess...

You seem to know a little 'bout the game mechanics. Do you have any clue on how Protection works? I suppose it's something like: final damage = damage - protection/2, or something simple like that. Just something that I always used to be curious about. Also, what about Rogue levels? They reduce your recovery time, but could higher levels also boost your hit and evade %? Kieran seems to have that, but that might just be a unique advantage. One of the few things that make him worthwi... ah, what am I saying, he just plain sucks!

One thing that keeps bugging me is an image I saw years back, from the scene with Victor and the Dark Army dudes that offer you to enter the DA, and the game actually gave the option to do so. Suppose there is an 'evil' route in this game, like LoL2 has? Like, attacking the Gorkha, killing that dude in the Urbish mines office and the beggar, and... well, that's pretty much it, I think?

Hello,
I have a solution in which it says that in the Gorkha Swamp, I need to get the "Powder of your Mother" identified. But each time I ask the witch doctor to identify something, he always identifies the wrong one (the honey thing), and I don't have enough money for another identification. So:

You can sell pretty much anything at one of those swamp heads (somewhere in the lower right corner) for 60 crowns, but you can ask Geron to identify it for you. Dawn can too, if I remember correctly.

Does anyone know how i can get Lands of Lore to crash deliberately??

I would really love to make things like this come up:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/1637/lolcd105zs1.png

This have been posted before. But i would really love to make it crash in a way where all the items get swaped around, so that some of the items that didnt make into the final game, but still is in the source code, will appear. Look at the arrow in the screenshot - not part of the final game, but im sure it was part of the beta game and in the source code. This screen shot was made by dosbox - lands of lore crashed and unlocked hidden items.

So do any of you know of a way i can get dosbox to make lands of lore crash? any ideas?

I know of one way, but it's a freeze and I don't think it'll help you out.

Anyway, if you go to White Tower lvl 3 or Castle Cimmeria lvl 1, go to a pit and try to get a ghost to appear on it. Now, place an item in the pit, so that it falls down. The ghost will disappear. You can now click on the pit (it may take a while to find the correct spot) to take the item back, and you can keep clicking the same spot to get duplicates.

As soon as two or more duplicates are dropped on the ground, the game will freeze.

On a related note, if you buy Great Sword 'Justice' from Victor and duplicate it like I described, equip all of your party members with duplicates and sell a fifth back to Victor. Leave his shop and check your characters; you'll notice them wearing 'Illegal Items', which look like mouse pointers, for weapons. Unequip all Illegal Items and place them in your inventory. Notice that your Might rating does not change.
Now, depending on your version (disk or CD), you can either:
- go back to Victor, buy Great Sword 'Justice' back, and all Illegal Items will change back into the sword. You can now re-equip your party with the swords, sell the fifth one back, etc. to create a loop to make your characters infinitely strong. (DISK VERSION)
- go to the Swamps, sell all Illegal Items at the frog head, duplicate your swords again and repeat the process again and again to start a loop to make your characters infinitely strong. (CD VERSION)

You can also do this with the sabre in Victor's shop or the Kite Shield at the swamp blacksmith to improve your Protection. The CD version also gives an infinite amount of Crowns. This method should also work for the disk version, but I haven't tested this.
Just be sure not to go out with duplicates equipped, because 'quaking' monsters make you drop them and crash the game.

Why not work out how the items are saved in the savegame files and modify them there?

Scatty
25-08-2010, 10:03 PM
It's not that easy actually, since the hex-code for item(s) changes all the time and depending on the party location in the game world, what was before a hex-code for some sword would be now a code for some other item. I tried earlier to hex-edit my savegames, but always got illegal items after going to a different area. To make the matters worse, hex-codes for items seem to be located not just in a single location but on many.
Don't think there've even been any inventory editors for Lands of Lore, ever, only trainers and at best character stats editors.

Blaatman
01-09-2010, 08:27 PM
I did some looking around, and I found some old posts from 2006:

The thing is that the inventory places change in every area you are in, so if you really want to cheat in this game you're better off with editing the inventory at the beginning of the game, as long as you didn't leave Gladstone Keep yet.

Rather the value of the item changes, the inventory place stays the same. Look here for the hexlist - DLH (http://dlh.net/chtdb/chtview.php?lang=ger&sys=pc&disp=e2795)
"Die 48 Items im gemeinsamen Gep ck" (they forgot to translate it) means "The 48 items in shared inventory".

When you click on the link in post #2, you'll find the item locations (offset 618-713).

Other than that, I do have a savegame from a guy nicked Reanimator from the start of the game, with items not found anywhere in the game. However, these don't have any graphics not used elsewhere in the game. I think it has some of the items from the bottom list:

Here is the list of the items you need a luck to find (at least, in disk version):
1. Horseshoe

It should work considering the fact that you did it right. Here is a suggestion, you can try downloading the game again and then running it in dosbox. There has been some rare cases where the downloaded archive appears to be corrupted or faulty or even different from the one you have right now. But like I said it is rare.

I am using the version of the game on the Abandonia site (the "regular" version, not an ISO Cellar version). Whether this is the CD version or not, I don't know.

The mount for my F drive is for an actual CD-ROM, the one for my G drive is actually a virtual drive, for when I mount ISO's and such.

I downloaded and installed version .73 of DosBox, and get the same issue - after I choose a character, there is a brief "flash" of the choose screen (I think), then it just dies to a black screen.

cd \dosbox\cdrive\your Lands of Lore folder

and see if that helps.

Unfortunately, this did not help. Thanks though.

I also have the problem mentioned. Once I choose my character, the screen dies off. Downloaded the game from Abandonia, tried again, and same problem occurs. Also, there should be voice acting at the character selection, I think, but all there is is music.

All I mounted was the game directory as c:, and that well enough got the game started. Using Vista and Dosbox 0.7.4.

Anyone? :( This game's a part of my childhood.

Well the first thing is to not mount the games folder as the C: drive. Your mounts should look more like this.

Mount C C:\oldgames (Or whatever you have the folder you store your old games in.)
C:
Cd\Lands (or whatever you have the game folder saced as.)

For the sound check that you have run the install or setup to set the sound card right. Ley us know how you go as these are really only the first things to try.

For what it's worth after a fast testrun:
Better run that one in dosbox 0.72, seems problematic in dosbox 0.74, must be it doesn't like the newer core emulation. Don't have time now to debug that game, so run it in 0.72.

FYI: you can install 0.72 besides 0.74, they won't interfere wiith eachother, 0.72 will also have own 0.72 start menu items.
As you're on Vista follow the 0.74 instructions I linked you to, both are almost the same.

Dosbox 0.72, default config, extract all files in the archive to \your virtual c:drive\lands\ , archive is ready to run 'as is' in dosbox 0.72.

Apparently it's a game version problem.

An update to 1.23 would be advised .........

Why not DosBox 0.73? DosBox 0.74 does seem to have problems with some games which is why I don't use it, but in 0.73 there aren't any problems with Lands of Lore.
Having said that, the CD version of Lands of Lore I have is one from the White Label series, not sure which version but probably be the last / latest one.

dosraider

Because 0.73 is in fact a pre-074 so to speek.
0.72 did not had "386, 386_slow, 486_slow, pentium_slow, 386_prefetch" core emulation, where 0.73 already had, and that's precisely where some -(only few in fact)- games choke on.

So when some rare game has a problem with that core emu I switch back to 0.72, it also avoids getting into problems later ingame.
Capiche?

But of course, feel free to test the game in 0.73, play completely through the game to be sure of what you claim and let us know. :)

Thanks. :)

I patched the game up to 1.23. I didn't previously even know there was a patch for the game available. That seemed to do the trick. It now starts up okay.

The voiceacting doesn't work still, though. This is a bit of a problem, since that was definitely one of the strong parts of the game. Voices work okay in the intro, but in-game turn off. I did run the setup, mind you, and tried with both soundblaster and soundblaster pro this far. Is there something to do with dosbox settings to help with this?

Oh no! :(

I used to play the cd version of the game as a child. That was too kickass to describe. So, you'd reckon there are no cd versions to download within the interwebz? As torrents, possibly, but for some reason unknown to me utorrent has a really hard time to work on my computer.

As soon as I get back home from studying abroads for christmas I could actually look for the original cd I should still at my parents' house.. Dosbox should be able to emulate that too, I reckon.

That I did, which is why I mentioned it. The game didn't want to start in 0.74 so I uninstalled it and tried in 0.73. I had no problems playing it through to end after that. Same also with Daggerfall which didn't like 0.74 (heavy sound stuttering) but was fine in 0.73.
There might be some hardware- and operating system related differences influencing the results though, my is an older Pentium M 1.4Ghz (Dell Latitude D600 notebook) and Windows XP SP2.

Decided to register while I was at it. I'll give it a shot trying to find the cd version. I'm not quite sure what you meant by the 'member iso cellar', but if there's nothing in the site faq, I'll take it's hidden for purpose from newcomers, and try to find relevant torrents from other parts of the vast webz.

Thank you for the help, though, everyone! At least the game works now.

Right.

Just one last thing. I downloaded the cd-version, but that one has the same problem with starting up as the diskett one had before patching. I tried patching to 1.02, and running it in Dosbox.72 instead of .74. Neither helped. The problem is:

0 problems occured: FILEDATA.FDT exiting

The file is there, where it's supposed to be, in gamefolder DATA. Where's the problem?

Krausedit\\ Also, it might be worthwhile noting that I downloaded the game from snesorama.us, not Abandonia. The site seemed trustworthy, though. Could this be the reason?

dosraider

That I did, which is why I mentioned it.
Same hre with 0.72, one of the first games I completed in 0.72, never went back to the game again, so I can't state 0.73 works, contrary to you.
Good to know that the game works fine in 0.73 also.
:)

Where's the problem?
Without any details, mount lines, install choices; how you exactly launch the game it's gonna be hard to help you ...... :mhh:

Krause
04-12-2010, 12:54 PM
God, let's see if I can help you much with details... I've very little experience with Dosbox.

I downloaded here:
[EDITED]

Found patch here:
http://www.patches-scrolls.de/lands_of_lore.php

When trying to launch the game from mounting:

mount c: c:\users\Tuuli\oldgames\LOLCD\
lolcd

Please insert the LOL CD Disk into drive B.
Press any key to try again or Q to quit trying. So, being clever as I am (/cough), I simply mounted:

mount b: c:\users\Tuuli\oldgames\LOLCD\
lolcd

which, surprisingly, started up the game. Before this I patched in DOSbox (mounting c: ), and ran the setup setting soundblaster as my soundcard. The game starts up fine. Everything works. Then, after selecting the character, the screen flashes and returns to DOS:

0 error with FILEDATA.FDT (2) - exiting

- - -

This, ultimately, is the same occurance as what happened with the diskett version before patching. Most likely it is, once again, a problem with the game file. Have anyone tried how the version downloaded from Abandonia works with .74 or .72? Would trying this help, or is there something else you'd propose before I try this out?

I do have the diskett version, without any voiceacting, working already, but I would prefer this version.

Also, there is little more details I can give you without instructions what details you would actually need, and how to best explain them. Using Windows Vista (sadly).

If it's gonna work, no idea, and I don't intend to download some obscure cracked CD version of the game.

Maybe you should ask where you downed the game?

BTW, The mods gonna love that link .... (NOT)

[EDit]

Oh, sorry, I didn't think it was against forum rules to offer the link. I apologize.

I don't see what exactly is different in your way of opening the game folder. I just mounted the game one step further, instead of going to lolcd manually.

But, yeah, thanks for the effort. I'll try a couple of combinations still, and if (most likely not) it's not going to help, I'll just settle with the floppy disk version.

krausedit\\ No, it's LOLCD.EXE. I'll see if messing with the file would work.

Then you're never in your life worked on a real Dos PC my friend.

You also state you 'patched' their game, that's usually a bad idea with cracked games.
Probably better delete that lolcd folder and start over from scratch.
Don't mess with lolcd.exe the file, look for a *.bat file, as I told you.

Cheers.

Can anyone explain how to use the hex editor for saved game files to increase a character's attributes? I'm a novice and I don't really understand offset values, etc that have been referenced in other sites, but through trial and error I managed to find out how to increase the fighter/rogue/mage levels. However, this doesn't seem to alter the character's total hit/mage points. Do these edits have to be done at the very beginning of the game, or can they be made at later levels?
Thanks for any suggestions.

man, lands of lore is perfectly balanced. don't use cheats, you'll ruin the whole gameplay

The Fifth Horseman

The hit points are most likely stored in a separate value.

"Offset" simply means a location in the file. Any decent hex editor will display the current address of the cursor somewhere, so use that as the guideline. Note that offsets can sometimes be expressed not as absolute values but rather as a difference from the location of another value.

Here you can find a good hex-list for Lands of Lore.
Link (http://dlh.net/chtdb/chtview.php?lang=ger&sys=pc&disp=e2795)

thanks for the link--few questions though. what does offset from character's name mean? in my editor i have "Ak'shel" written to the side of the 16 columns of numbers at line "00000040" (the 5th row from top). so where does the "offset from character's name" begin? the positions listed in the link don't seem to correspond with values i see in the hex editor for my saved game file.
i'm using cygnus, and at the bottom right corner of the program there are numbers indicating positions (offsets?), e.g. 50/1426E shows "FF", and there's another box beside the position indicator which gives a value (for 50/1426 it's "-1").

sorry if this doesn't make any sense--i have no background in coding.
is there a way to upload an screenshot of what my editor looks like (if it would help?)

Scatty

An offset from character's name begins from the first position after the last letter of the name. An example is in the uploaded picture below (click on the thumbnail for larger view).
So the both marked (in black) positions on the most right and middle section of the edited file window is beginning of the offset in question. From that position you count onward until you reach the position mentioned in the hex-list further above. Also the middle section where the red circle marks the spot is the section with the values which the hex-list refers to, meaning this is where you look for and edit those values. Those are called hexadecimal values which range from 0 to F, i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F. On the right side are the same corresponding values, in the form as they're normally typed in.

Hi, i am an old LOL player, in fact, this games was the first game that my parends bought me when i was my first PC (32mb RAM, 500mb HD and pentium II 660mhz), nearly 15 years ago.

Recently, i found the CD version lost in a chest with another table-games when i was just a kid and i decided play it again after see severals videos on youtube although neither of them show you all secrets could you find in this games.

there are severals misteries that nobody would know how to figue out:

- the empty niche of lvl 2 of daracle cave (jeweled dagger rute next to the swith that moves the pit)
- the plate that hides the niche where you can get the black biter dagger.
- Worn key open an, empty chest?
- Mine key 3 opens, nothing?
- Fancy lock (and the closed unswitch door of it) is impossible to unlock.
- The 4 wall switches in the 2º lvl of white tower (near of minotau) do nothing?
- Severals switches and plates do nothings in 2º lvl of castel cimmeria
- the hidden plate in the dungeon, that sounds activated but nothing happens in this place (this plate is at the top-right corner of the map near of the fancy tramp)
- the empty niche in the 3º lvl of castel cimmeria due to there is an unamovible pit in front of it.
- the no-exit hall in the top of the room when you are fighting against Scotia.

I thinks the official Cluebook from westwood did not give any help to solved them, the rest of the misteries is easy to resolve.

About some no-quest items i found in the games i get (all it depends of the game):

- horseshoe is found in northlands and southlands. It is useless.
- some coins in the main fountain of the galshtone castel and inside some lake in the northlands.
- a generic axe in a stumb in the cross of the hall of the black eagle and the 2 reptile monsters (always i found it before enter the black eagle) in southlands.
- a generic Halberd take from a pentrog
- a generic great maul in the empty niche in the urbish mine company co ( just in the south-bottom)
- a generic trident take from a gorka (kill them)
- a great axe take from great orc and undead skeletor (a silcke too)
- a great sword take from spectres lvl 3 white towers.

oldplayer90
13-01-2011, 10:37 AM
By the way, the 3 silents items (i mean, the sandals, the blucker and the t-shirt) only have effects if each character where one of them and i have noticed that at least you won't be found by the great orcs in the yvel woods but they are useless if you think you won't ran into spectres in 3 lvl white towers.

I passed the game several times, so right now i spend the time looking for any mistery in the game, and try to get the highest amount of coins in the games (more or less i have been able to get 26.000 coins XD), feeding with useless items the gorka fancy wall in the swamp (a lot of rocks, sticks, notes, cadavers, etc.)

I think if you are able to get a halberd taken from a pentrog in opinwood the game will be easy to pass (i think that is the best weapon, even more than great sword or great maul) and i say that because i could kill severals spectres in lvl 3 white tower just with halberds.

I have exactly the same error: if i start the game, i get the logos, the main screen and the character selection screen, where everything works. When i select a character, the screen goes black, and nothing happens. BTW, its the same if i launch the game directly or from DOSbox.

I didn't modify anything in DOSbox. I mounted like the "intro mount" stuff told me: "mount c c:\games\lands" then "c:" and finally "lands.exe"

I'm on Windows XP, tried it in Win95 compatibility and the same thing happens.

(Also, don't have any sound, but thats not that important so far, i just want to start the game.)

DarthHelmet86

Don't...I repeat DON'T mount the lands folder as the C: drive, Dos games do not like that at all. Mount your C: drive as the Games folder.

I.E

Mount C C:\Games
C:
Cd\Lands
Lands.exe

Though I don't know if this will help with Lands of Lore as it seems to be a bit buggy with Dosbox for some people. But doing it anyway other then this will mean no matter what you do the game wont work properly.

This goes for any game you want to run in Dosbox, mount your C: drive as another folder other then the games folder.

Tried it, same error.

I also tried a couple of things (0.73, 0.74, tinkered with some graphics options in the DOSbox ini), still nothing.

However i tried to patch it, downloaded the 1.23 english patch form some site, and it didn't work. It said that CHAPTER2.BAK is not the old (i guess it meant original) file, so it aborts the patching. Any ideas?

hmmm, what are your core and cycles settings in dosbox? does it say anything in the second output window when the game freezes?

edit: i think i found it, try using dosbox 0.72 and see if it changes anything

edit²: oh i see. it seems that the game (rip?) has problems with faster processors. and the latter versions of dosbox introduced different types of cpu, so the default value `auto` will probably try to select the fastest processor possible

anyways, all you have to do, in dosbox, is to write this command before you start the game: cputype 386
should work afterwards

oh, if you don't feel like writing this every time you start the game, change it in the dosbox's configuration file

now let me put this info on the review page

I posted this earlier (emphasis added):

Hey there, I'm a veteran Lands of Lore player myself as well. Some comments on your post:
- About the empty niche in the Jeweled Dagger route, I think that if you put something in it, it will appear in another niche further down in the caves. Kind of pointless, really.
- The Worn Key only opens the empty chest, as far as I know.
- The Fancy Lock cannot be unlocked; there is no key in the game (even those that can only be obtained by cheating) that can open it. However, if you cheat yourself behind the door, you'll find a chest with a Zephyr Ring. It reduces your recovery time after attacking by about 1/2.
- Mine Key 3 doesn't work on anything I've tried.
- I think you can get the four buttons in White Tower level 2 make the shooter... shoot things at you.
- In White Tower level 1, if you succesfully pick the lock of the empty chest on your first try, it will NOT be empty.
- If you have a walk-through-walls cheat, you can find an unfinished area behind Castle Cimmeria (in the Yvel Woods). Apparently there was once meant to be a way to leave the Dungeons to the Yvel Woods in this area. I believe you can still find the stairs up in the Dungeons using the cheat.
- In Castle Cimmeria level 2, behind one of the switches that does nothing, there is an unreachable area with a chest. Inside it is a Cloud Ring. I think I once read it protects against fire.
- You may also find a coin in one of the puddles in the Southland Forest. You'll get a comment something like: "Ah, must be the end of the rainbow!". Maybe this is what you meant, 'cause I've never found a coin in one of the puddles in the Northlands?
- You can actually find up the three Halberds from the Pentrogs. I've been lucky enough to find two in one game.
- You might be lucky enough to get Trident "Mantis" from the chieftain. If you save and reload BEFORE you enter the chieftain's hut, you have multiple tries to get it. (This might also work for the Pentrogs if you save before going to Opinwood.)
- If you happen to have killed the Wraith that drops the Great Sword in the wall, you can click the wall to get the sword. Of course, you need to guess which monster it is.
- Similarly, you can get Great Sword "Eagle" from one of the ghosts in Castle Cimmeria level 1.

Certainly did. Yes, I am that techno-illiterate. I didn't realise that i had to mount both drives. Please read my second edit in my orginal post. I got it working but ran into further problems (as Strobe did) but the patch wouldn't work.

If you allow me the question, why do you need to download the game from here if you still got the original CD? The version hosted on Abandonia is a floppy version for space reasons, which, aside of lacking the speech and other advantages of a CD version should also be an older version with more problems than the CD version has.
But to return to your troubles, try using the following commands to mount the folder with the game:

mount c c:\
c:
cd (folder where you got the game placed)

Also when you select the soundcard and music card in the setup / install, keep in mind that DosBox's default IRQ for Soundblaster is 7, which you should set it to. These settings are default and should be without problems - Soundblaster Pro, Port 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1. Setting them any different might be the problem with the character selection screen (not sure, since I never had that problem with my CD version).
Might also be that the install program doesn't ask for the values above, aside of selecting a card, it's a while since I played the game.

Well, I feel like an ass. Thanks for telling me where I could find the solution. I do appreciate it.

Edit: And for the record, I did end up installing from the cd. It intially gave me an error that it couldn't create the folder. But, after creating it in windows and then telling the installer the path, I had no problems.

yes, the problem is that applications in win7 can only modify files in the "users" directory without permission, unless you run it as admin

I have read the last several pages here and am having trouble understanding how I can make the game install from a cd and have it accept my install path.

Here is what strangedays said - " And for the record, I did end up installing from the cd. It intially gave me an error that it couldn't create the folder. But, after creating it in windows and then telling the installer the path, I had no problems."

But I still don't understand how it was done. I have the same problem w/ Win 7 system.

Thanks, but I have done all you suggested and here is the message I get when I try to run the install from the disc is this:

"could not make the destination directory"

Here is what I do
mount e e:\ -t cdrom (as e is where the disc is)
then - e:
then - install

The install program comes up with e as the folder for the game, c as the install folder, and asks for a destination name. I have tried the default destination, made up my own, gave it the oldgames destination - everything. It then asks for yes or no, and I type y. This is when I get the "could not make destination directory" error

I have also created a folder for the games in c "c\users\andy\oldgames" as suggested

Bottom line: I want to play the game with the speech enabled. If there is an easier way I will gladly try it. If I have the disc, can I somehow take them from there and use them with the Abandonia install? If so, what are they called? Can I just copy and paste them? Thanks for any help

Check the permissions on the target directory. Or try to create the directory yourself before running the installer.

allthumbs

When I get to the install screen, it says

Source disc - E (which is correct)

Destination disc - C (I want this to be D, but it won't let me change it. Either way, it won't install to C either. It says they are invalid drive directories.)

I have created a destination folder before the install is run. How can I check the permissions on the target directory?

Depending on the specific Windows version, the directory permissions may only be accessible in the Safe Mode.

What is exactly your C mount line?
And a screenie of the mounts and the error message could be helpful.
It's not normal that you can't install the game.

Also:
From your dosbox C prompt input:
dir > dir.txt
Post a screenie of the result.

[Edit]
The game is listed as ISO in the ISO cellar, did you try to mount the ISO directly with imgmount in dosbox?

I managed to get it to go on an old pc. Thanks for the help. I don't know what the hell is wrong on my Win 7 rig, but I no longer want to mess with it.:dislike:

The voices aren't that big of a deal, and I kind of prefer Anvil of Dawn anyway. I have just recently discovered how to use DosBox, so there are a bazillion games I want to try. I can run some, as I said, on my old pc, but it's down in my nasty basement.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I just took to playing through this first game of the series again, and I chose Kieran, since I've never done that before. And it strikes me: Why on earth did they make a character like Kieran? Is it deliberate (which is plain dumb) or a programming error? I mean, the guys' stats are the wort of the bunch in every respect, he has no miht, no magic, and even his so-called quickness is absent. He' talking about dodging blows, but his protection score is the lowest of them all!

Why on earth did Westwood do this?

Probably to integrate a character who's a part of the game world, as hulines are.

But Conrad is the jack of all trades, and a good one at that.
Kieran is a jack of no trades. I just wonder why they made such a dumb choice of character? Who in their right mind would go for the lowest abilities in the game?

Conrad has a protection skill of 12, the highest in the game. Kierans skill is 6!

DarthHelmet86
22-03-2011, 11:31 AM
Well I don't think he is dumb and I know a few others who love him too. As far as I know he does have some benefits, but I don't know a lot about the game to be sure. And as I said as stupid as he might seem to be to you others do like him and he was the character who did everything in the game according to LoL2 and LoL3.

Nanuaraq
22-03-2011, 11:41 AM
Perhaps I am unclear. I do not find the character Kieran stupid in any way. I like the feline look, he is really cool.
The stupid thing about it is - sorry for being harsh - that he has got so low stats that he is a lot harder to play. Not more challenging in the way of having to rethink ones strategy, just harder in an irritating way.

The character stats are what's "stupid", not the character.

He was my first choice at plyaying the game, only I had to start over and choose someone else because I got so bored with reloading.

Having just checked a F.A.Q on the game I found this about him,

Kieran (Huline)
Kieran's stats may be low, but don't be fooled. He is very fast and needs the
least recovery time after attacking. If you are a quick player Kieran can really
work out. Even his magic can grow fast once you start gaining mage levels.
If you are an experienced player, then give Kieran a chance.

So it would seem his best stat is Dex and that he can attack faster then the others and has good magic skills when you start leveling them.

True, he's about 20% faster than other characters (one more attack in 5 or so), but it doesn't matter much: His low might score makes the extra attacks almost useless. And I've never heard of a Dex stat?

His magic skills are better than Michaels, but worse than Conrads, so not much gained there.

Anyway, sorry for ranting, I just got so confused as to why they made him like that. I seriously thought the protection skill of 6 was an erronous 16.

As I said I don't know a lot about this game, however Dex would have something to do with Ranged attacks I think. Just saying don't write him off. As the F.A.Q says don't write him off just because of his stats there is more to it then that.

I'm not writing him off, actually I'm going through the game these days with him as my choice of character :)

I may be a ranter, but it just seemed so pointlessly done by Westwood. Thank you for your answers.

My pleasure, I enjoy talking to people about stuff like this. It has made me want to play the game again, crank up my cd version.

It is a bit hard to say why Westwood put him in there like that, but I would say he might have been in there as a sort of expert character. Takes more skill and knowledge of the game to play him well sort of thing. Or they might have just wanted a more Personality based character rather then skills, they liked him enough or the fans did to make him the cannon character to beat the game.

Well, it certainly does take a bit more forward planning to play him. As for the Urbish Mines, the level with the two-headed flying snakes was only beaten because I had saved up a lot of swarms and also emptied the wand of fireballs at them, along with channeling my remaining mana into the green skull.

The snail-like monster right at the mine entrance was almost impossible. I had to move in, use the green skull, then move out and close the door VERY quickly, then rest and repeat in order to get anywhere. Took many tries.

I'm not sure how I'll beat Castle Cimmeria.

I have the talkie version of LOL on a disc and managed to get it to run on DosBox, but have a question. It was pretty choppy so I raised the cycles to around 10,000, which helped some. Does anyone have some generic recommended DosBox settings for this game?

Also, sometimes as the character is about to speak, or I point to something that has a verbal explanation, there is a lag while I hear the cd "kick in" and the voice begins shortly after. Is this normal? Thanks alot!

You may want to type "cputype 386" before running the game, as this will fix some problems.
I run it at 8000 cycles. Remember that although more cycles will make the virtual cpu faster, it also takes more power of your actual cpu to work. So raising cycles too much makes your actual pc work slower, counterproductive to making dosbox faster.

A lag in sound before the CD kicks in is common in many games, especially older games. you may fix it by copying an ISO image of your CD and mounting it on a virtual drive, then making the virtual drive your CD-drive in dosbox. This eliminates the lag.

Hmmm
mine was set at blocksize=1024 prebuffer=20

Anyone have any success with running cpugrab utility with this game?

Edit: My experience with using CPU Grab at 30% and setting the cycles at 10,000 or so is pretty respectable. I tried changing the blocksize and prebuffer settings as suggested, but it didn't seem to make a difference, so I set them back to 1024 and 20 as was what they were set at originally. I would like to try the imgmount but to be honest, it took me a hell of a lot of frustration to get to where I am now running the game, so I think I will leave well enough alone!

I nearly pooped myself when I got this working. The ingredients are a mid to high end android phone (I have an older droid 1 but overclocked to 1.1 ghz), andosbox from the market, and the cd dump of the game, available on thepiratebay.org. its legal now, don't worry! About 300mb, so just delete some porn!

Put the game directory in the root of the sd card, and then type mount d: /sdcard/(game directory) -t cdrom

Then d:/ and install the game normally, choosing soundblaster

Then run it! It plays beautifully with full sound!

For convenience, add that command line to your .conf file for andosbox. I'm multitasking between here and the game on my phone right now!

Note: I chose 8mb memory in andosbox, and installed swapper 2 to increase my ram. You definitely want to clock your bad boy up to 1ghz if possible.

I don't know if it was already posted before, but I found this very cool page on Lands of Lore with tons of item, armour, weapon, spell and monster statistics. Some of it taken from game manual (monsters) but I don't know what's the origin of the rest of the stuff. Can't find those tables in my book, but the font looks the same as in manual.
It's a spoiler, so beware.
