True, he's about 20% faster than other characters (one more attack in 5 or so), but it doesn't matter much: His low might score makes the extra attacks almost useless. And I've never heard of a Dex stat?
His magic skills are better than Michaels, but worse than Conrads, so not much gained there.
Anyway, sorry for ranting, I just got so confused as to why they made him like that. I seriously thought the protection skill of 6 was an erronous 16.
I've played and finished this game for dozens of times, and, in my opinion, Kieran is hands down the worst character by far. Please allow me to explain why.
Due to his personal might modifier, his might is slightly higher in the beginning of the game, but lower in the later parts. For example, a dagger has weapon factor 10, which turns to 11 for Kieran. Great Sword "Justice" has weapon factor 60, which turns to 52 for Kieran. I guess this is to reflect that he's relatively more proficient with lighter weapons. However, due to the way defense works, he can barely scratch monsters later in the game. You see, defense reduces damage done by directly substracting from it, not dividing it (like most games do). That means that a character with a Might of 100 does more damage than two attacks from a character with a Might of 50. Even Kieran's faster attack and higher chance to hit (which he seems to have, though I'm not entirely sure of it) can't outweigh this. Also take in account that more damage means more experience, so Michael (and Conrad, for that matter) will end up with a higher fighter level, which means more hit points.
Also, the damage done using spells directly depends on the character's might modifier. That means that Michael actually has the most damaging spells in the game, and Kieran has the weakest. Magic items like wands and swarms also take in account the might modifier, so Michael should have no problem reaching Mage level 2 for more magic points. From there he should be fine on his own; more damage done means more experience, so he'll reach levels 3 and 4 quite easily for even more MP.
Kieran's attack speed is nice, but all characters receive this bonus on a succesful hit. Not thát important, but it is another reason why Kieran isn't that good compared to others.
Speaking of attack speed, Rogue levels are quite important, because reaching a higher level means that your attack becomes slightly faster. I don't exactly remember whether levels 2 and 3 did anything for your attack speed, but on level 4 (note: Jade Necklesses and Great Axe "Master" don't count) all characters' recovery time is cut by several frames. This is really easy to get; just equip a character with a nice bow for a while and he'll get there. Kieran may reach this a little easier, but it's no big deal. I'm actually not sure whether Kieran receives this bonus at all.
Then there's still Kieran's low Protection. He can't even equip boots. While a low Protecion and Might also applies to Ak'shell, at least he has a lot of MP to work with; this really comes in handy in the toughest parts of the game, like White Tower level 3 and the Dungeons.
For what it's worth, Kieran's still pretty good in the early game, where his attacks frequently take out weaker monsters in one hit. That advantage is quite short-lived, however. Also, I don't think ranged weapons take the might modifier in account, so he's a great character for Crossbow "Valkyrie", which always hits. Then again, this weapon really doesn't do much against later enemies. Kieran does, however, become arguably the most powerful character once you get the Westwood stick, which does 1000 damage 25% of the time you hit succesfully. This is so late in the game, however, that it is hardly worth considering.

Really happy to see the talkie version is now available! Great work!!
But I cannot get it to run using the commands listed by the download. I am able to run the game from a cd, but it hesitataes whenever someone is about to speak, so I would like to try this out.
here are my auto exec commands
do I leave them, or start over with a clean slate in the command area for DosBox? If I do start over, please help me with what to type in. The game is located in
"c-users-andy-oldgames-LOLCD"
mount c "c:\users\andy\oldgames"
mount d "e:\" -t cdrom

It doesn't really matter in which folder the game is located, as long as DosBox is able to find it to mount. However the delay before the speech probably means your sound blocksize in dosbox configuration file is set too high. Try changing these settings like below, and see if that helps.

Also keep in mind, modern CD drives aren't really suited to run those old games from a CD, too many spin up/down times, you should use a CD image (ISO or BIN/CUE) and use the excellent imgmount in dosbox.

That depends on how strong your machine is. I have it always set to 30.000 cycles, though 27.000 should be optimal for pretty much every game before 1996. 16.000 should be more than enough for Lands of Lore, if the game isn't too slow for you, you might just leave it as it is.

My machine is pretty beefy. Is there a way to permanently set this in the config, or should I?
Also, I enter "cputype 386" before playing. Should I permanently set the config to this as well?
I don't understand why I can't get it to run without the cd by using the new cd version posted here on Abandonia? I erased all my old autoexec commands and try to start over. But it keeps saying "directory c:/lolcd/ does not exist". It appears maybe the first command line is being accepted, though. I even went as far as to install to plain old "C", giving the game it's own folder rather than a sub folder as I normally do, under "users/andy/oldgames" - still no luck. Now I just really want to know what i am doing wrong. I would rather run the game via the new CD version here on Abandonia instead of farting around with the dvd spinup issues I have using my own cd. I don't want to try imgmount either - sorry- I have put enough time and am already confused enough. Please help me run the new cd version!

You don't have to throw the old configuration out at all. :) Assuming you put the game in "lolcd" under "oldgames":
mount d: "c:\users\andy\oldgames\lolcd\cd\" -t cdrom -label LOL_CD
mount c: "c:\users\andy\oldgames\lolcd\"
#mount c "c:\users\andy\oldgames"
#mount d "e:\" -t cdrom
c:
Adding a # mark at the beginning of a line in the config file turns it into a comment - DOSBox will not execute it unless you remove the #.

I'm not sure what you mean with "new commands", it's a bit confusing what you're writing, to be honest.
As for which mount commands - let's say you put the game into a folder named c:\games\lolcd, then:
mount c c:\
mount d e:\ -t cdrom
c:
cd \games\lolcd
It is usually better to simply mount the drive C then to switch manually to necessary folder, as long as you don't begin messing with the files in the root of the C drive. Using parenthesis in mount commands, like you in commands you mentioned further above for mounting, is not necessary. Probably DosBox won't even find the folder you're trying to mount if you do.
You can also permanently set the cputype and amount of cycles in the config file, as well as many other options. All you need to do is to click yourself through Start - DosBox folder - Configuration - Edit Configuration.

Somehow I left the Draracle's cave with Lora (unintentionally visited the Draracle before rescuing her.. no cheating, it's simply the order I did things in) and now I can't get past adding Paulson. Four in the party crashes things. Looks like some others have had this issue.. one person mentioned removing Lora from the party (cannot figure out how to do this), and I can't get back to the Draracle to unload her.

You can only remove her from party through hex-editing your save game and knowing where and what to edit, as far as I know. The only other way to make things right again (it sucks I know) is to start a new game and avoid the small cave with Lora after visiting Draracle.
This also shouldn't happen if you play the CD version of Lands of Lore, at least it never did to me. After visitign Draracle either Lora can't be found there anymore, or you can't enter the small cave, don't remember exactly which one it was.

The niche accepted the statue and I deleted my old save games. Am I screwed? Is there a way to get the statue back?

Gave this game a try and must say I am not that impressed. But it does seem to be ahead of its time in terms of great presentation and low substance, you know like all the "RPGs" (really action adventures) today.
The graphics are great, interface is good and they have Captain Picard as voice actor! But there is little RPG value here, I'd say its mostly a very linear adventure with some values and items. Plus the fights are extremely boring, magic attack 4, rest, magic attack 4, rest...
Blaatman is right, Michael is a great Magic Char, after 20 fights or so when he got magic 2 he was a one man army.
I am now in the white tower and don't think I'll keep playing, its not much fun.

You have to keep in mind that it was made after Westwood lost (I think?) the AD&D license, and it was just a ramped up Eye of the Beholder like game. And for that I think it succeeded. The CD version was released after the initial disk release, so the original was something to satiate the people after the disappointment that was EoB3. It is more of an adventure, but neither of the early Gold Box games or the EoB games had much of "role play". As for the magic attack 4, rest thing.. meh. Why? This is a prime example of trying to make it boring for yourself. Why not use your party? Melee attacks? Ranged attacks? Anyway, to each his/her own I guess. Though LoL certainly can't hold the candle to Dark Sun: The Shattered Lands that came out around the same time, I do think it is a pretty solid addition to the CRPG legacy.

It was and still is a great game. Some people just spoil their own fun when comparing it too much with other, more real rpg-ish games.
Re-bought it right after it was released on GOG (bundled with the second game).

Unfortunately there're only two ways to get rid of the problem. One is trying to hex-edit your savegame and remove Lora's data from your party, which is rather complicated and probably won't entirely work anyway. The other one is load a savegame before you got Lora in your party on your way out from Daracle's caves.
If you don't have any savegame left before this point, I'm afraid the only thing left for you to do is to start a new game, since there's no other way to avoid the crash when Paulson is about to join you.

After spending several hours fighting monsters to boost my character stats, I was finally (and barely) powerful enough to survive the never-ending onslaught of ogres to find the one carrying the cube. However, Paulson was knocked unconscious, and though I've healed him, he just won't wake up, and I can't figure out why. I'd really like to have his sword and magic with me as I take on the white tower. Anyone have an idea how I can wake him?

Does anyone know, what are the limits of fighter/rogue/mage skills? I think Baccata has limited the fighter skill by 10, because when in the Dungeon after killing all the Knowless, all characters are leveling up. But when Baccata is to get level, the game just stucks.

I played all the way through this game only to not have any medicine left at the end of the game to unlock the final boss. what would be the hex edit to get medicine, or the hex edit to get the silver key? Is there another way besides stating over? I went back through some of the forest levels checking every stump I could find, but nothing.

I believe that's the result of a bug present in some earlier versions of Lands. Namely, once your character has 128 HP or more, Heal:III and Heal:IV won't resurrect him (or her, if you can get Lora that high), and applying Bezel Cup would result in a "zombie" state: 100% health, takes no blows, and can't do anything. As far as I know this state is irreversible, so only loading a previous save could help. If you don't, either start over (I recommend getting a newer version where this bug is fixed) or just proceed. This state has some benefits to sugar the pill: you can use Paulson as a shield, and you won't drown now.

Yep, 10 is the maximum level for all three skills.
Pity you lost so much time gaining level 10 only to encounter a bug while trying to get 11. (If you don't have earlier save files where you're still at 9, you can possibly save yourself from that bug if you wait till Knowles respawn and then just attack Xeobs instead of getting their reward.)

Hex-editing to add items is really complicated. (It would probably take me some full work day to recover that knowledge and explain it :-) )
Much easier would be to hex-edit your position across that locked door.
Yet you don't need that, too. Even if you can't find any stump or Urbish mines drawer with medicine (BTW you can use save/loads and try more than once. Almost every stump and hollow has something in it, but you usually need your first attempt to be successful or it is lost), there is still a way to get yourself a Salve and a Bezel Cup. There is a trunk-"chest" in Opinwood near the entrance to Swamps that can be refilled. I am not certain what exactly triggers it, but if you pass through the areas in this sequence: Opinwood -> Urbish Mines -> Upper Opinwood -> Swamps -> Opinwood, I believe you will find that trunk full of items again (there should be Bracers, Salve, Bezel Cup, and Sabre "Gutter").
Here are my notes. Feel free to use them[...]
All stats compared with Conrad, it's impossible to give any fixed numbers as the effects vary from character to character
Nice work!
(NB: it could be more convenient to give might/protection values for secondary characters (Timothy, Baccata, Lora, Paulson) since they all have default modifying constants (<value>*1+0).
A couple notes on items:
Crossbow "Valkyrie" - shoots fire arrows that always hit (unless the monster is immune).
Bezel Ring - protects from poisons (including swamp gas).
Also, I believe a few interesting ones are missing from the list... which probably means you still have something interesting ahead if you play the game again :-)
I've played and finished this game for dozens of times, and, in my opinion, Kieran is hands down the worst character by far. Please allow me to explain why.
[...]
Extremely good analysis. I agree with the most arguments. (I did not know about the way defense works myself, BTW, thank you!). Not quite sure about the effect of Rogue skill on the time between the attacks for Kieran: I did research once but forgot the result already :-/ I think he only had one decrease, at Rogue level 7 (not to mention I've managed to forget about this effect of Rogue already :-) )
One point I disagree is the disadvantage from having lower HP (due to lower Fighter level, due to lower damages). By the time this difference becomes significant, you can already be near or beyond the "magical" 127 HP threshold. Which means constant headache in the most hot battles because Heal:III and Heal:IV become ineffective when trying to heal over 127 HP of damage (in some versions, they have no effect at all, in others you get less HPs than from Heal:I).
As for your conclusion... Well, I am less experienced with Kieran than with the others, but I believe by now winning with him would not be much greater problem for me. So he will be mostly a support character, shouldn't be a problem: anyway Baccata deals the most damage even compared to Michael (2 weapons meaning much greater chance to hit, meaning greater attack speed). Might even give him "Valkyrie" and enjoy the increased attack speed (though he actually does seem to have improved hit rate, and yes, his attack speed with melee weapons is further increased by successful hits). And he'll still have 83-108 MP to use on healing, even though it could take extra 15 mins (or 300 s.c.) to get him there.
But he is indeed by far the weakest when it comes to offensive magic.
And for relatively new players Kieran might add too much challenge.

Wow I've had this game for about 15+ years and played it many times and still it amazes me and I've only just seen this topic
Not sure if many people still use this topic but I wouldn't mind delving into the mechanics on this game
I too have some experience in hex editing so if I can assist anyone in that department then i'd love to help
Also whats with the guide which lists the data of enemies
A Boar according to the guide has 26 HP and 25 Exp
However in my playthrough Boar had only 11 HP (Phys/Mag) and 20 HP for Projectiles
Does it have 2 HPs ??
Also it works out as having 15 Exp and not 25
Am I missing something here

Maybe it's a random factor for enemies, depending on skill levels of the party?
Like if you have magic skill 5 or more and encounter a boar, his stats are adjusted for him to be tougher. While if you encounter one by rushing through the game and spending little time for training, the boar you would encounter would also have weaker stats, to not overwhelm the player. Or maybe it's just always a bit random.
After all, hex positions for items also change each time from location to location.

I don't think it goes off player stats - maybe random
If Random though then it makes those books with enemy stats in it rather useless doesn't it
Also it seems items have to be bought/found or at some point unlocked for them to appear on Item lists (otherwise it will just say Illegal Item)
Maybe this was some kind of Anti-cheat method used by Westwood

Actually, I recall reading a quoted information on a German, fan-based Lands of Lore series site once, from one of the original developers of the first game. He said something along the lines that the first Lands of Lore was pretty chaotically (unorganized) programmed when it was developed, and he is surprised that it works as good as it does.
Might explain the weirdness with the items code, which doesn't make a lot of sense.

Hello, may I ask a question? Excuse my poor English, it's no native to me. ^ ^
Tell me, if you happen to know ― by what means can the graphics of Lands of Lore be extracted and modified? (me personally unable even to make a screenshot somewhy). I'm interested in items graphics, monster sprites and also the portraits of characters because I need some example to make my own.
Extra question: maybe there is way to launch Lands of Lore in window ― mine doesn't have such option. I suppose this would settle the problem...
Thanks for your attention, I'm reall very sorry to interrupt.

Ok, I'm sure most of you know that this game works on ScummVM, right?
Ok, I recently decided to test it, and got to the end of this linear corridor of a RPG. And to my surprise, the game worked almost perfectly. The VERY minor issues I had where related to the graphics (some coloured dots where they should't be in some places).
Best part is: I didn't need to mess with the cycles in Dosbox. ;) :p

On the game itself, though, it has so many hidden riddles that aren't necessary to finish the game, it's amazing!

Hello to the community,
I have read all the 104 pages of this forum, Lands of Lore sure was a hell of a game, I loved it and still do!
In case some of you need a trainer, I developped one that I think is great because it has lots of stuff the other trainers I tried before didn't have: you can add or remove any character to the party, rename them as you want, change their individual health points or magic points, or even make them all invincible or with infinite magic. You're a good man, mougino, that is a work of absolute beauty, I love how you've used the game's UI to fit your creation, sublimely done! Shame I didn't have it a few years back, where I mistakenly threw the yellow gem in the mines unto an unreachable spot. Oops. Never play tired, I guess!
Thanks again, you've achieved nothing short of a miracle!

You can alter their fighter, rogue or mage skills, their status (stunned, poisoned, etc.), or change their equipments or money. You can add or remove any of the compass, lantern, atlas or magic scroll. You can edit any of the 7 spells from the scroll and choose among the 9 at your disposal. I've played Lands of Lore 1 back in 1993. I bought the Temptation pack some time later and the CDs are still functional. In fact I have all three LOL games in the original packages...
I installed it on my android tablet and I'm immersed again. Although I have a very good Monster legends level I can't stop playing LoL.
I tried to read this whole thread, but I'm not 19 anymore and I don't have the free time to do so... :/ Is there an "essential items to finish the game" list somewhere?

@Grypas: I can't help you with what you asked, just to ask you something: I'm not sure are your original packages any different than boxshots we currently have, but would you consider scanning them and uploading them?
If you have original packages, then perhaps you have box and CD case, and CD itself for scanning.
We are grateful for any coontributuons :) Thanks

Ey guys, somebody seems to have figured out how to open the fancy lock on Cimmeria lvl1 with an unreachable item, "the Blood key". I do know he is cheating but it is quite a discovery, isn't it?.
After all this time, this game never stops amazing me.
Here's the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJk2fDAZD8U).

Hello, nice forum!
So i decided to see if i could get my ol' CD version running. After some trial and error it works with sound and all. I ripped all the files in a folder, got a random LoL-iso that i use for magiciso and starting the game in dosbox 0.74&0.72 works!
So I decided to play a bit on this sunday with Ak Shel, it went very good untilll... the mines.
In the mines in level 1 (part 2) there is a pit that (according to the clue book) should close when you step in a certain area when you are in posession of a certain Mine Key 2. The pit does not close. Strange thing is that at level 2, a pit that should not exist does open and close.
Tried:
-several combinations of the two 'Mine Key 2' in order of using etc
-dosbox 0.72 (with a save from a game played in 0.74, would that mater?)
-update, i tried to update but not sure if it works. The game still says it is V1.02
I downloaded the lolcdpch, ran it in dosbox, than ran PATCH in dosbox which added some files... not sure if there is a third step to be taken?
Kind regards and thanks for the help!

From the old RPG games, this is my favorite RPG game. :OK:
In the past, I had the version of the game that the Trainer worked. This Trainer gave a lot of strength to your character. In addition to raising your money to 32,000. :o :omg:
I tested it in 2 ways. Before entering the Throne room and / or after accepting the mission from King, I attacked the guards. They were very powerful and a blow was enough for me to die... Then I used the Trainer and it was only a blow to kill the guard. The other guard, not realizing it, had the same end. I collected the weapons. :sneakrete: :mischief:
I also used this same tactic with the creatures guards of the Swamp. One blow was enough to kill them and they did not realize it, they did not declare me persona non grata. I collected the weapons. :sneakrete: :mischief:
As for the Royal Staff, it made me sad that the Herbalist was gone (probably dead) and the kind Blacksmith betrayed his King and allied himself with his enemies. I wonder what happened to Victor? Is he dead after I’ve eliminated the enemy Commander? :byesad:
Now, I will talk about funny game scenes. I remember that the beautiful girl from Harbor was very grumpy and unfriendly. I tormented her by clicking on her and she was stressed. When the Palace was invaded and then the Hero sees the destroyed Harbor, he says that the girl deserved it. I found it funny because normally a Hero would not say that... :byesad:
Another funny scene was after receiving the mission from King, I would need to find the Vizier for further guidance and documents. I liked to click on the glittering head of the Vizier... :hairpull: :tease:
Another funny scene was when the group of Heroes slept and were surprised by the enemy attack. Their wide eyes are priceless. :hihihi:
Now, I will give you some tips on how to corner enemies, to find them and exterminate them. In the city where you encountered Victor, you can create Walls of Ice so that the enemies are trapped. Just destroy the Ice Wall, kill the opponent and create the Ice Wall again. And check your map to see what “clean” areas your enemies are. But one important thing is that the Ice Wall will only be eternal if you do not sleep in the same area.
This same tactic may be adopted in the Cave where there are two peoples fighting each other. They look like Octopus or Squid. You can use the Ice Wall tactic to finish the mission faster. But I believe they have (acidic) powers to destroy your powerful armor.
The other one I used to create Walls of Ice was in the Forest where there were the fierce Orcs before Scotia’s Castle. To avoid the constant struggle with Orcs, I created Walls of Ice between the two Entrances / Exits in this Forest. The Orcs grunted, but they could not attack me. Phew! Whew!
There are 2 or 3 powerful Magical Scrolls in the City with houses whose doors are with Wood Boards. You need to check each house to find them.
Unfortunately there may be Chests that do not even open with the Skill at level 10 and if you destroy with a Weapon, the precious contents of the Chest can be destroyed. :palm: :picard:
EDIT:
I forgot to mention a few more words.
You can use your freezing power to go through the marsh holes, but with the use of the Trainer, you can traverse them smoothly.
The other point is that you can kill the enemy of the Swamp People from a distance with the use of arrows and crossbows.
Not to mention that the BGM of the game is very pretty and cool from the same Composer of the game Dune II and Dune 2000.

Hello all lovers and fans of LOL 1,
There is a way how to kill a third form of SCOTIA. You have to be patient :-)
I found one way how SCOTIA AFTER THE THIRD TRANSFORMATION (became an invincible one?) can be killed at castle level 3.
Using no cheating, no Whole of Truth. And it did work.
I just used a Westwood stick and freeze spell IV to defeat her. I Hit the third form approximately 43-times by stick(43 000 damage) and finally I cast a freeze spell IV--ice wall and shattered the ice.
Then a monstrum disappeared, but then the game could not and can´t ever go to the end.
DID ANYONE EVER TRY IT BEFORE? If yes, please let´s make a comment :-)
The game is still surprising me even after 25 years when I played it for first time :-)

How interesting. :OK:
To be honest, as I used trainer, and then, I needed to use a hex editor to edit the savegames (invulnerability or immortality and party location on the map), I used to “collect” any powerful weapons. :sneakrete: :mischief:
Even with weapons of the royal guards and tridents of the soldiers of the amphibious people of the marshes. And then I went to the White Tower (correct name?) In which there was hostile “phoenix” and deposited the armaments cataloging according to the type and power.
I do not remember seeing this Westwood stick. How and where did you get this object? At what location (region map) and store (human or demi-human)?

So,
I forgot to add, did not use any hex editor and others too.
- Westwood stick looks as inconspicuous and useless stick, but it is just bluff. The stick is in the chest in the northeast corner at the Castle level 2.
Logically, it does make a sense. If any creature/monster/fighter can be hit and it shows its damage by points, then must be a way to kill any fighting object in the game. In case of Westwood stick that inflicts only 1000 points of damage but not every hit-again you have to be patient :-).
And why is Westwood stick the only weapon can hurt a third form of Scotia? I do not know. But what I do know that LOL1 was developed by Westwood studios :-) Any connection to that? Yes, probably... :-)
The game has many hidden meanings and it´s really magical.

As I used the trainer at the time (with immortality, super strength and wealth) and later hex editor with many limitations, I undress the characters and fought that monster from the mines without any armor and weapons.
Anyway, thanks for the tips. :OK:

Wow, that’s cool! So Scotia kept secretly hidden a weapon in her Castle.
That trainer I mentioned before gave super strength to the party. I am not sure, but each hit was worth 1,000 to over 3,000!
You could kill the royal guards and soldiers of the Marshes without anyone noticing it, because a blow was enough to kill them! And then collect the powerful weapons... :sneakrete: :mischief:
Too bad I could not figure out how to have super strength and wealth using the hex editor.
And unfortunately Westwood did not know to release sequels of the same level or better than remarkable prequels such as Dune II, The Legend of Kyrandia, Lands of Lore, etc.

Maybe I mispronounced, but I meant that the sequels were not bad, but they were not on the same level as the prequels.
I played a bit LOL2, but the truth is that I did not like the introduction of “real” digitized characters. I preferred cartoonized digitized characters. I watched on YouTube the interaction of 2 soldiers with the god (with demon appearance). It was not good. :(
The same goes for the games I quoted. I liked Dune II more than Dune 2000 (sort of improved Dune II as well as Warcraft II); LOK1 was more interesting, because LOK2 had ridiculously difficult puzzles, the story of the hands and feet of the evil wizard dispenses comments... :palm:
Just to give you an idea, the “new” King’s Bounty and Fantasy Wars series from 1C Company has spectacularly digitized cut-scenes. Well, the Diablo series managed to make non-cartoonized digitized cut-scenes done well. :OK:
PS: This would just be my personal opinion, but I noticed that the author of a Walkthrough also considered LOL2 acceptable while the LOL3 was inedible.

Oh, yeah I guess I can agree with everything. I prefer cartonized characters, but I guess market demands were shifting in late 90es, so we get what we have to get in those terms. Still that's someting we have to swallow if we don't like it, but gameplay is most important in the end. And yeah, I guess it is not on the same level as LOL1, but I guess that is also how games industry is evolving. When was the last time you heard of AAA game that has tons of hidden stuff that took years of playing until something is discovered?

What a pity, as Westwood have the chance to overcome the failures. Well, at least Civilization V seems to be good, because my brother liked the game. XCOM series as well.
Now, I am not sure if it would be possible to accomplish the mission in advance. I will explain more clearly: For you to get the Ruby of Truth from the Ruler of amphibian people, you need to eliminate an enemy monster. But what would happen if you had eliminated the monster before by using bows, crossbows? For the monster is trapped by sort of a mud marshy.
You still have the option of getting the Ruby of Truth without a fight. If your Rogue skills level is high enough, you can steal without the Ruler realizing it.

Well, it doesn't necessary have to be secrets that stay hidden for years really :D You are right about that. But what passed as AAA title back then was still develped by a bunch of enthusiasts and you can see/feel that in the game. When it really became corporate and strictly money-making, almost all was lost. Nowadays when thay praise a game for variety and lots of things you can do, is like they are discovering again what was good about video games in the first place.
Maybe not so good example is Jagged Alliance and JA2. Yes, second game is great game, lots of stuff to do, story, jokes etc... but still somehow you don't get shit for no purpose than variety or fun. No Elio, no Reuabn, snitching and arguing that is often more irritating than fun. Nobody wants that in their game anymore. So yeah, LOL2 is good game, but LOL1 is not example of the good game, but example of what used to be a good game. Could be also things are now less hidden and surprising because of interent and sharing experiences, dunno.

I am not sure because although the pic of the “red god” appears, I am pretty sure the maps were colored... :dunno:

Just a note: if you use a browser with extension / add-on like NoScript, ScriptSafe or something similar, do not allow the lygo.com domain as this may lead you to the broken link.
If you’d like to save the LOL Maps page, I’d recommend not saving to PDF using Chrome and its compatible browsers. I would recommend using IE to save in MHT format. Unfortunately, neither Firefox nor SeaMonkey (and compatible browsers) managed to save in MHT, the download just freeze... :smugulon:

One thing that caught my attention in the Cluebook you mentioned, Grandmaster Spectreman, was the stats of such so-called Great Orcs.
I always thought that such little Orcs were Goblins or small Ogres. They do not have the appearance of an Orc. Well, at least that would be my impression from the past.
Now, regarding these Great Orcs, I was surprised that stats are the same for everyone. Why? You will realize that there are 03 types of Great Orcs:
• Those who wear the gold armor, with a fiercest and frightening appearance (purple fur);
• Those who wear the beautiful and shining silver armor;
• And, finally, those who wear the bronze armor.
I always thought the ones wearing “nobler” and gleaming armor were more powerful or higher ranking type. It is like the hierarchy of super-soldiers Sardaukar and the indomitable Fremen.
Here comes the old Myst always thorough in the smallest details. It is just a curiosity.
By the way, the Cabal Warriors and Dark Commander are very cool! :kosta: They are certainly my favorite villains! :sneakrete: :mischief:

Hey folks,
I am a LONG time fan of this game. I still have my original CD I got for Christmas in '94.
I ran into some problems I am unsure of how to solve. After character selection the game freezes/crashes. Previously, this issue was solved by setting the cputype=386, however this seems to no longer work. I've read the manual and tried adjusting the cycles, to no avail.
Suggestions?

Do not use 74-2? ;) Why to update if you don't need it for your game?
Seriously, I would simply start the game in 0.74, as it works for you, as simplest solution.
Old DosBox notes also suggests to install patch. Check patches here (https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/2406/7/).
Also, explanation of the bug available here (https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=21798&highlight=). My (little) computer knowledge translate it as "there are several errors in code, fixed by patch, and one of them crashes DOSBox if processor supports it. 386 in DOSBox-0.74 isn't, so set core to 386 fixes this particular problem". Obviously, 0.74-2 changed it. And patch is recommended anyway. :)

Okay.... So I re-installed .74. I tried the usual cputype/mounting. Didn't work. I got out my old laptop, and strangely, it did work (old laptop is running .74). At this point I have no idea what's going on.

It might be the cycles set too high, more than 18000 shouldn't be necessary for the game, even less would be smooth.
Be sure to not set the available memsize= to more than 16mb, better yet set it to 8mb, some older games have problem with that. Also be sure to set ems= at the bottom in the options file to false, leave xms=true as is default. Be sure to use the 386_slow / 486_slow settings at cputype=, not the 386 or 386_prefetch ones as those often crash games.
core= should better be set to dynamic as it's the stable option, normal sometimes crashes games, as does simple.
