Huzzah!!! Finally! This game is so good, I can't believe Abandonia has waited till now to get it. But hey, now it's on here and all is good. This is by far the best of this kind of RPG's ever made. I won't be downloading it because I have the cd myself (voiced by Patrick Stewart :)), but I'll recommend everybody else who doesn't have the cd download it right away.

A big thanks to Omuletzu and Bobbin!

*edit*

HUZZAH! HUZZAH! HUZZAH!

The joy never ends.

*edit again*

The review says this version has speech included. Surely that can't be true when it's only 12 MB?

Omuletzu
08-04-2005, 01:08 PM
mmm i made the review for my version of the game(full iso), and i am not aware of the contens of the uploaded package... if it lacks speech, somebody(Seba ) should correct the error within the review

Chris

Strobe and me discussed this matter. Actually the floppie-version HAS some speech. Alas, it's only in the intro and (few) other scenes. So we decided to leave the sentence in the review as is.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it is Patrick Steward's voice, however.

Cirrus

It is his voice.

GREAT GAME!
I also have the CD-Version myself, so I won't download it, but it's surely one of the best games ever.

i think we can keep the review the way it is, because it actually features speech,
even if not as much as the cd-version (just like bobbin explained above).

A first rate game. Never played lands of lore 2 or 3 however. How do they compare to Lands1? Could abandonia get them?

Lands of Lore 2 - Guardians of Destiny is great, I think. At least I enjoyed it, too. Epic story and very cool music, especially in the later stages of the game. But the game consists of 4 CD's - I doubt it will make its way here, even if it's abandoned already, which could be wrong yet.

Omuletzu

As i understand it, Lands of Lore 2 was made only for windows.... so it should be inferior to the first part, but i could be wrong

Unfortunately i cannot use DosBox due to limited CPU power (you know P3), so if anyone has managed to make it work on winXP tell me, I am so tired playing solitaire all the time
New games need a lot of power, old games need either very slow pc or monster pc, I am somewhere between dead and alive :P hehehe where nothing is possible :ranting:

I'd suggest trying VDMSound. Ít doesn't drain nearly as much cpu power as Dosbox.

manage to get the game working!

even though the intro scene and the hero selection are displayed as usual,
afterwards a black screen appears and won't vanish...

I fiddled around with VDMSound a bit, and eventually browsed the net to find a solution. I found this patch (http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=lolp123.zip&ref=ps), and using that it worked. It even worked in pure xp, but without sound of course. It also turns out that the version here on Abandonia is the US floppy release (that was the only patch that worked).

Normally you just have to count the pages, lines and words. The page number is given below the single pages. This is the only problem i could think of. In addition you get the first letter of the wanted word, which should also give you a clue which word is the right one. Be sure to count all lines (even headlines).

How about some gameplay discussion...

Who's your favorite character to play with? The first time I played throught his game I used Conrad, (WAY back in the day, this was the first game I got for my Pentium 1 66MHz), and found the game to be easiest with either him, or Michael for the advantage of brute force

So, this time, I'm going with Kieran. He makes it much more challenging to survive the early encounters! However, I seem to rememeber the orginal manual claiming that with a little work Kieran had the most potential, and would be the more powerful of the heroes if you could keep him alive to the later stages of the game. So, I'm anxious to see how Kieran compares with endgame Conrad or Michael. Michael especially seemed to suffer in the late game, it seemed to me, when powerful magic became very useful, and awesome weapons made his brute strengh not as much of an advantage. After all, "Justice" is a powerful sword whether it's being wielded by Michael or Ak'Shel!

The thing I remember most about theis game was learning a very useful RPG lesson: always strip your party-mates right before you're going to part ways with them! I remember the first time I finished the first trip to Roland's and left Timothy behind before heading to the Draracle...all i could think about was all the great stuff he had, (not really great stuff at that stage of the game, but it seemed like it at the time!). So, after dragging that girl out of the Draracle's cave, (Lara? was that her name?), I was SURE to remove all her gear before we said goodbye. I think about that everytime I play any RPG now, and always remove characters' stuff before I do anything that might cause us to part ways....

I played this game long time ago and this is a great game. Maybe one of the first RPG's that i finished.
First time around i played conrad and this time around i again seem to be liking conrad.
I just want to know about skills ... how to improve ROGUE skill ? fighter increases by meleeing foes. Mage increases by using magic on foes. But what about rogue how does that skill increase ?

About kieren being good late game i agree with that. Most probably she will get some sort of stealth ability or backstab bonus damgage or avoidance something like that which willl help greatly late game. Its just a guess though.

EmeraldFlashlight
09-04-2005, 06:26 AM
It took me a long time to figure out how to increase rogue skill, too. It increases a little from lockpicking, but the best way to do it is to use bows. How practicing with a bow makes you better at bluffing I'll never know, but there it is...

On my first time through this game, the character who ended up with the highest rogue level was the four-armed Thumgog, strangely enough! I had him equipped with a sword in one weapon hand and a crossbow in the other, so every time he swung it would increase both skills!

This time for a little more of a challenge, I think I'll make the Thumgog a pure mage instead of fighter. A fighter is really the easiest way to go for him, given his racial advantages and natural talents, but according to the story he's given up the martial ways of his people and is more interested in being a mage. So, since I'm the kind of nerd who actually cares about his RPG characters' feelings, I think it will be fun to give him his wish and not take the easy way out by just slapping two big swords on him and swinging away.

So, I'll have Kieran for rogue stuff, the Thumgog (why can't i remember his name?) as the mage, which leaves Paulson as the tough guy, (once I pick him up, of course). To me, this is a good setup if you're interested in a challenge, and in roleplaying characters according to their personalities.

On the flip side, I'd say the powergamer setup would be to pick Ak'Shel, get him a bow early to boost his rogue level, and make Mr. Thumgog pure melee, maximizing his racial advantages. So, you've got a tough fighter, a powerful caster who can also handle the rogue tasks, and picking up Paulson will just be icing on the cake.

All this brings back another memory of this game... poison stinks! I remember getting poisoned and having no choice but to rest until the character died, then healing him back to life, if I didn't have any cures. Then came those wondeful immune to poision Bezel rings, but the stupid Thumgog's fingers were too fat for them, so the poor guy was always dying from poison...sigh...

The Thumgog's name is Bacaata, if remember correctly ;)
Btw. any of you remember that two gates at the very entrance to Scotia's Castle (after finishing the war with one of the weird races and helping other) that can't be opened, entered or bashed, but where it was visible there's something behind them? The weird thing is, you aren't supposed to enter them in the game oficially at all, BUT you can. All you have to do is to save the game, exit it, hexedit the savegame on the location where the position of the group is saved (little experimenting needed there, easy way is to save the game, move to the next tile and save another game, then compare the games in DOS) so you end up now BEHIND the gates.
The bonus in that - there a pretty cool two-handed sword you can get there, not as powerful as best one you get on usual way, but almost, and it has another name. Now the question is - why would that sword be there if the player isn't supposed to be able to reach that place...

Lands of Lore!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first RPG I played many years ago with my first PC, a 386 DX 40MHz with 512 Kb video card and 4MB RAM. HA HA! What a time!
I completely loved this game and though lacking extended character creation, is one of my favourite games ever!

But I would like to ask for those of you that finished the game, about a bug that I encountered twice in the past.

Remember the 4 gold pyramids that you have to find to save the king?

When you have the three of them I think, Scotia finds you, transformed in a beautiful lady and something asks you to do. I don't remember what she says. If you don't trust her, she transforms into a lizard and attacks you. If you defeat her, she transforms into a crow and flyes away, leaving behind the last pyramid. If you don't fight her, you don't get the last pyramid and you find it later in a castle inside a drawer in a wall. But you cannot pick it up!
The pyramid remains in the wall and you cannot get it in any way.

Has anyone encountered the above problem?

The version here is smaller, has few voices, and no commentary about the game history, and the version at HOTU is BIGGER< has the same exact voices, at the same exact places as this one (No more, no less) and has no commentary. However the ISO has the nearly the same amount of memory as the one from HOTU, and has ALL the voices, and the commentary.... :eeeeeh: So, what the fffff? Lands of Lore is a great game indeed, but i encountered another copy-protection:

In the white tower basement, the ghost of an old woman asks you about the word of faith, which can be found on pageX lineX wordX in the Book of Lore.
I remember this book: (curse me that I haven't got my original CD Version anymore) It dealt with the creatures and the history of the lands.
If anyone could upload the book just like the manual, this would be great!
Otherwise I cannot play any further :(

Chris
10-04-2005, 01:26 PM
The version here is the US floppy version. AFAIK HOTU provides some CD-rip, as the original ISO has about 150 MB. Alas, I don't know the HOTU-version, so I can't tell which parts got ripped off. (We all know about HOTU's download ratios and the bittorrent links aren't really faster).

Okay, I can't promise this will help you, but it worked for me, so here goes:

1) Download the patch from the site I linked to. Make sure it's the US version.
2) Extract the zip file to the game directory and run the PATCH.exe file.
3) Run setup.exe with VDMSound and choose Soundblaster Pro.
4) Run Lands.exe with VDMSound.

I got the black screen before patching the game, and it worked after patching it, so I think this should work for you too. If it does, please let us know, because then it would probably be a good idea to include the patch in the download, or at least link to it on the game page.

The Slug-Thing in the mine can only be killed using a green skull. It can be found in a treehole in the Opinwood. Another one is in a chest in the Upper Opinwood.
The Cube to destroy Scotias barrier is located at the very end of the mine.

Oh and collect every emerald blade, that you find, you'll need them!

Actually I tried the green skull and it didnt work, but I tried all the different blades and found that the little curved ones work. Can't think what they're calkled right now though. I can go to every part of the mine since I can ifgure a way to start the machine and to unlock a couple of doors down there. Im kinda figuring that I was supposed to use the key the skeleton dudes drop, but I used it on another chest by accident so I hope that's not the key I needed.

As far as I know you cannot "misuse" a key.
The mines are quite tricky. There is a place, where two blue wheels are at the walls. Just a few steps further a button in the wall activates the combination defined by the wheels.
I'm not sure, but i think u have to use the wheel on the north wall once, then press the button, to open a portal and a pit.
It is importaint that you make use of both to acces the whole mine.

I ran into the same copy protection as Cayel did.. I'm in the White Tower, talking to an old woman, who asks

"What is the word of faith? You may find it on page X, line X word X of the Book of Lore (count all lines including titles)."

The Book of Lore must be a different book than the manual, because it asked for page 18, when the manual only has 17 pages. Help!!!!!

Well If you can't misuse a key, then what did you use to open the door in the bottom 2nd floor down in the mines. I am pretty sure that it was probably the key that the skeletons dropped. I used it on a chest that said "Hmmm....empty" right away. The glitch probably made it so that I could open the chest, but not see it's contents since I used that key. plus I don't think I can go on without being able to open that door. Its the door right by the stairs where you can hear those little miner dudes inside. :wall: Ah well. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be happy to know. Otherwise I don't think I can continue this game and if others come across the same thing it will add confusion to them as well.

Guest

That chest is supposed to be empty. To get the key you need, you must first activate the pumping machine on the first level of the Mines. Then you must go to Mines level 2 and go to the stairs that were flooded (the only stair down in this level). I think I know virtually everything about the game. Feel free to mail me at [EDITED]

I would definitely not ask that - thankfully it seems the developers didn't feel like inputting that either.

However, if I could get you to fill in the below words, anyone playing the game should be able to get by the copy protection in an average of ~2 tries. Looks like the developers didn't put in that many possible words :)

You can download it here if i'm correct...just go to the download page for the game...

I have to admit though, I played this (Great) game a while back without speech and really enjoyed it...I'm replaying it now from the version they have at the Underdogs (with speech etc...). It's the Mutts nuts if I do say so myself...

I would definitely not ask that - thankfully it seems the developers didn't feel like inputting that either.

However, if I could get you to fill in the below words, anyone playing the game should be able to get by the copy protection in an average of ~2 tries. Looks like the developers didn't put in that many possible words :)

Something really bad happens to me when I was playing this. At the end of the Urbish Mine level when I've found Paulson he joins to my crew and behind a secret doors I've found his armour and other equipment. But I didn't find the Vaelan's cube, which according to walkthrough I should find there. Unfortunately I saved the game in this place.
It has to be some kind of a bug. I cannot move further without that cube. If someone has a saved game in this place or somewhere not far away from it mail it please to [EDITED]. Or if someone knows any other solution for this I will apreciate it. Thanks.

Haha, you're one of thousands of people who fell for that one. If you find Paulson before Dawn, Dawn will give you the Cube instead.

Hey. I've this problem when I find Paulsen. After I've talked to him and got the key, then when I press the exit button and return to the mine the game crashes. Have anybody encountered this bug before? Lora is with the crew, can that be the problem since she was supposed to be with Dracela (whatever his name was), the game migth crash because it can`t add Paulsen since she is there... :help: .??Help! :help:

Im still confused how to get past the mine. I think I may have needed the key the skeletons dropped but used it on a chest and it took it. All the other chests were pickable and that one was probably too. I can't get into a couple of doors in the mines right now, because one needs a key and one, the button doesnt work. Can find the blur wheel things to start the machine since I can't even open the doors. I was told that the machine drains a flooded stairwell, but I havent even seen a flooded stair case. I wish I didn't save it because the way I see it now, there is nothing else I can do.

The flooded stairway is at Mines Level 2. It's almost directly west of your starting point. Also, it's the only stair leading down in this level.

Can you tell me which door you can't open because of a button that doesn't work?

He used a trainer to walk through walls. First, he visited the Draracle without Lora. Then, he went to the place where you find Lora. This place is now sealed off by a wall. By walking through this wall, you can still take Lora with you to the Southern continent.

Well seeing how the stair case leading to the little miner dudes and the bouncing dogs isn't flooded when I am playing, that probably means I have had a glitch that messed the game over. Im figuring it was one of two things. "Misused the key the skeleton's dropped", or "Past the slug at the entrance without killing it right away, and went into the mine while it was still alive." I did kill the slug later though. Im assuming the mine level 2 you are refering to is the level with the locked door that I cannot get it. The stair was never flooded there. So Im just moving away from this game and am going to try my hand at simulation gamez. I know otherz have alot of other problems with this game and Im not gonna be a pussy and bitch about it any further. ~PEACE~

You have to click on start menu and after that... you should click on uninstall windows. Once it is done you should restart your computer and put the first flopy disk for DOS 6.2 and follow the instructions... but one of my friend told me that there is another simpler solution, a software with name boxdos or dosbox...

I have no idea how to edit the game...

The easiest thing to do is just to remove Lora from your party. Another solution might be to cheat yourself back to the Draracle and visit him again. You propably have to give him another gift, though there is still one remaining in the caves.

That's odd; I never had problems with that, but I'm playing the cd version. You're saying it's on the floor? It's supposed to be in a niche in the south east in the second level...

:help: I am at another stand-still. I can't find another key in the white tower to get anywhere. I got the blue mystic key from where the ghosts are hanging out, cant find a spot for that. Also, I can't figure out how to do the pattern in the room where there are three portals in the mine. I gathered clues from off the walls in Mine lvl 2 that say "left right retneC," so I tried to go into the portals in that order, while even going backwards in the center portal, but that doesn't work. Anyone know how to either use that blue mystic key or get the right pattern with the portals in the bottom level of the mine? I also can't find a way into that door, which that lion ghost thing says "YOU HAVE NO FAITH!" I've tried for awhile and still can't figure a way in. I think it may have to do with that note that says "Pascata Rosa 4 4 6," but I'm not totally sure bout that. I could always get the walkthrough, which is what I will probably do. :help:

That with the "You have no Faith!" place, I think you need the chalice there or something, into which you can mix the components for the cure then. Not completely sure, though, it's some time ago since I played the game.

The "left right retneC" message is about the weels in the north west of Mines lv. 2. First you have to turn the left one, then the right one and finally the center one.

You still need the Ivory Key from White Tower lv. 3. You can find it behind a door in the upper part of the level. I believe that, to open this door, you need to solve the 'dark room' puzzle of the second level first to get the key.
The Ivory Key can be used on level 1.

The "You have no faith!" message is because you do not have the Crucible of Faith in your inventory yet.

Just a little note for those that are stuck or getting whipped big some of the creatures later in the game can be killed faster with magic then the weapon. Ghosts especially can be easily killed with the hand of fate.

Thanks again for finding this game

I still can't even find a way to the chick that asks for something from book of lore. Cant even figure out how to get past the altar de blanca or a few places in the mines that are blocked by pits. In level 1 of the mines for example, there is a pit that blocks the end, where that one wheel is that opens the other pit. Im guessing I have to go to castle cimmera, but can't find the niche for the secret passage. If anyone can help that'd be cool.

Alter de Blanca: are you having problems with the password? Look at the previous page.

Mines lv. 1: throw the Mine Key 2 you find in the niche across the pit to make the two pits disappear.

Castle Cimmeria: be patient. You have to make the Elixer first before you can get there.

You can enter it the same time you are able to visit it, speak the same time you are in the area where it is. Just be sure to explore the entire forest area there first, can't still hurt to be better in skills. :)

Your levels are high enough; I managed to finish the Tower with none of my levels being higher than 5 on ferocious difficulty. It's not that hard; it's all about strategy.

I presume you know you can use the two Emerald Blades as an effective weapon against ghosts. Also, you could use the Hand of Fate spell, but it uses up a lot of MP. This means you have to rest for a long time, giving the ghosts time to regenerate. Of course you should use the spell if you're facing three or more ghosts in the same square :P.
Basically, my strategy is to equip Baccata with both the Emerald Blades (regardless of the main character) and have the other to characters use the Heal spell. Don't even bother trying to attack with the other characters.
Lastly, do not forget to make progress in the level as fast as possible to fight the least possible times (the ghosts regenerate after about two minutes).

Good luck!

Hi all!

I keep getting stuck at the Yvel Woods. Everytime I try to get the cube by killing the huge Orcs, I manage to kill some before being overwhelmed by their sheer numbers and getting killed instead. Is there some effective way of killing them?

I use Ak'shel (Lvl 5 Mage), Bacatta (Lvl 5 Fighter) and Paulson (Lvl 5 Fighter). Ak'shel is only effective against them when he has enough magic to cast spells (and that runs out quickly). Bacatta does decent damage to them. And Paulson does little damage and just gets hit a lot. So, killing them is not easy for my group.

Undertaker
18-05-2005, 03:17 PM
Stay away from magic when fighting Great Orcs. But even more important is that you SHOULD NEVER USE BLUNT WEAPONS AGAINST THEM. Blunt weapons include mauls, staffs etc. They barely damage these Orcs. You'd best use swords against them.

Also, try to move through the forest as quickly as possible, to give the Orcs as little time as possible to be 'produced'.

Believe it or not, but these are the weaker verion of the Great Orcs. The stronger version appears later in the game and they can simply not be harmed by blunt weapons.

Nightstrike

I finally slogged my way through by facing them while backed into dead ends, healing alot, sleeping to recover magic, and moving when they seemed to have thinned out.

Unfortunately, I couldn't move fast and avoid them because they were so numerous. I had to eliminate that batch first, and move between respawns. Else, they'd just trap me in some open space from all 4 or so sides - then my party would be a goner!

Thanks for the tip - but do you mean to say that these Orcs will always be this tough to handle? Whew. Looks like I have more slogging to do.

I posted a rather long post the other day, but it got lost during the Abandonia server transfer. Since then I found the answers to some of my own questions. Gamefreak

Some few rooms in Scotia's Castle cannot be entered. Those can only be reached through cheating, i.e. hex-editing the position of the party in the save-game. One of those rooms, where there are two transparent door-like walls contains a very good two-handed sword that's almost as strong as the strongest two-handed sword in the game. ;)

Where is this room? Are you talking about the room where the sword of "Doom" something was found? If so, you just need to shoot with bow through the gates at the button on the wall on the other side.

By the way, since I have beaten the game already, I don't think it is wrong to ask for the hex cheat if any of you know how to do so. Just for fun :D

South part of the first level... I don't remember. I did found a sword of "Doom" something, but it was in one of the two locked gate rooms in the north part of the first level.

Anyway, thanks for the trainer. I already downloaded it and will try it later.

The HOTU version (which I used to play) does not require you to enter copyright codes, and as far as I know it is the full rip of the game. The reason why it is not 150MB is because the demo files (for Kyrandia 3, etc.) from the original CD were removed. The files for Lands of Lore themselves are complete, AFAIK.

This game is a master piece it has some awsome game play and the graphics where top of the line for its time even now simple yet creative artwork. As a multi-media student studying full time I can really appretiate the talent gone into this game, Lands of Lore 2 lost everything this gme was I was sorry to find... It's a shame they went for the more realistic 3D enviroment because I loved the basic layout in the first Lands of Lore. Simple yet so fun and full of exitement.

Now as with any game there are flaws, so as to provide constructive critisism I think the worst thing about the game was the alien like level, bright red and shiney.. why!!!

yea but apart from that small aspect this game is AWSOME :ok:

This was the first graphical RPG I ever played... and never finished.
One level involving a castle and some sort of bluish/white ghosts did me in repeatedly, then I lost the game in a move. Thanks to you guys (and HotU now that it's blocked) I can go back and finish the first of only two gRPGs that I never completed.

Hroanr: For the HotU (CD) version, you need to run the 'lands.bat' file instead of the lolcd.exe. This batch file sidesteps the CD check. Alternatively, you can mount a b: drive to point directly to your lands of lore directory (in dosbox) and it will work as well. (ex. mount b c:\games\lore) then run the lolcd.exe.

Incidentally, this also keeps anyone using the HotU version from being able to use the forementioned trainer. You can mount b: and point it straight to your lore directory on your harddrive and copy the lolcd.exe to lands.exe, but the trainer was written specifically for the disk version and won't do anything in-game. Hopefully this will save someone from wasting the time to try this. Tsearch should work fine though, if you really want to cheat.

Oh, and it's definitely Patrick Stewart at the beginning ;)

My problem: I cant kill Scotia..

I have finnished this game before and I dont remember if there was anything special you needed to use(except for the neclage of truth) on here..

I get the problem after her 3rd transform (1st is the toad, 2dn is the furry worm-like monster).. I havent freed Richard yet though and I saved my game inside scoties "nest" so I cant go back..

So, anyone know if there is some special spell or weapin you need on her 3rd transform(reptile like with tentacles???)? because as it is now I cant damage him, or atleast no blood-splash appear when I hit him etc,.

Thanks!

Gamefreak

You need to free king Richard and he'll give you the Shard of Truth (if I recall the name correctly), which you need to combine with the Necklace of Truth to get the Full Truth (or similar). When you this one then on Scotia immediately, and before she transforms herself into one of the monsters, she won't transfer anymore and you can beat her to death. But when she transforms the third time in this mega worm, this one is invulnerable, you can't hurt him and he'll kill you.

But also the story is very good one, unfolding with the game's progress, and the locations are very interesting, too. For example this alien castle that's like a mix of Alien movies and UFO's, or Dracoid Ruins that are just plain creepy.

I dont remmember all of them. I looked for walkthroughs and non of them said anything about this (or maybe just said they had no idea what to do).
One I remmember is in the Urbish Mines, there was a pit which i couldnt find a way to cross.. and i dont remmember but i think there was a chest there or a switch I dont remmember (not an illusion).
Another is a door in Castle Cimeria which i couldnt find a way to open.
If anybody knows anything about either of them please comment :)

There is a post about this earlier in the thread already. The only way to enter these locations is to hex-edit the location of the party in a savegame. How it works? Save a game while you stand somewhere. Then move one step forward and save another game. Now in Dos prompt type at the prompt: fc /b XXX.gam XXX2.gam (or the XXX.gam should be your savegames).
Look at the hex adresses that show up. I don't remember anymore, but it could be that you need to use the try-and-error method with editing the games, as there might be many results.

If you give Scotia in guise of Dawn what she asks for, you will be stuck in the game with no way to win anymore. All you could do then is to load the game before that spot.
If you fight the lizard, she will turn into the crow and fly away after some hits (if I remember correctly). Running away, well, no idea.

I know many people* have no idea about what im gonna ask and probebly everybody is stuck and just gave up. im talking about all the mysterys (that probebly were left as mysterys) that are in Land of Lore 1.
Hehe. I've posted this stuff before, but I don't mind doing it again.

To cross that pit, you have to throw Mine Key 2 to the other side of the other pit, after you get it from the niche. Both pits will disappear after that. Your reward? Mine Key 3. There's no lock for this key though, but it's a nice trophy for solving the puzzle! :D

The jammed door in Castle Cimmeria lv. 1 is a mystery even today. Some people, including my brother, claimed they were able to open it, but don't know how they did it. There's nothing on the other side, though.

The other door in the first level of Castle Cimmeria (with the Fancy Lock) can't be opened, as far as I know. It's really too bad, because there's a treasure chest. If you open it (you can use the Small Key) you'll find lot's of stuff, including the Great Bow "Darkness" and the Zephyr Ring, which reduces your recharge time after attacking. Did you notice how your waiting time is reduced after you succesfully strike a monster? You'll now alway strike with that speed! :max:

In White Tower lv. 1, there's an empty chest. But if you picked the lock at the first attempt, it will contain items, including the best shield in the game; the Dwarvish Kite Shield!

If you give Scotia Dawn's Key, you'll retrieve it after solving the "The sum must be correct" puzzle at Cimmeria lv. 3. If you run from Scotia, the attack on Yvel is not triggered, so you'll be stuck until you beat her.

There's also a hidden spell in the game. You can find it in the west of Yvel. Click on one of the closed doors, and they'll come loose, so you can enter the building. It's useful against ghosts. Westwood fans will probably recognise this spell!

If you have any questions, please ask. I know virtualy everything about the game.

That's strange, as when I was able to cross the pit through hex-editing the savegame earlier, I found there just another Mine Key 2...

Actually, there is a two-handed sword on the other side, that is if you mean the two doors that look like a pattern of branches. This two-handed sword, forgot it's name, is the second best melee weapon in the game, aside of the best two-handed sword that is found as the game proceeds. And you get hurt slightly while trying to get that sword, it's on a kind of an emblem on the wall and it looks just like a pattern on the wall, but if you click there, you get the sword.

You don't mean by chance the spell Hand of Fate? It's not really hidden, as far as I know, you can find it in more than one place in the game, but maybe that differs on different versions, I have the CD version with full speech of Patrick Steward.

Well, I've got the CD version as well, and what you're telling surprises me.

Are your saying you found a Mine Key 2 at BOTH niches?! That's odd...

I don't mean the branched doors. You can open those doors by shooting through them. This can be done if you first throw a certain switch in the Dungeons. Alternatively, you can stand in front of the door, save your game and load it. You will then always shoot through the grates.
I was talking about the door, that doesn't open if you press it's switch. Baccata will then say: "Blast, this door is jammed".

And as far as I know, the HOF spell can only be found at one location. If you did find it somewhere else, please let me know! But you weren't talking about the Dark Gauntlet, are you? That weapon let's you cast a level 1 HOF spell for no magic cost...

No, I didn't talk about the gauntlet... I think I was also able to find Hand of Fate earlier when I played the game in these dungeons below Castle Cimmeria while helping one of the races, but not completely sure.
And nice to know, that with the two doors. I shot through them, but didn't know that it goes with saving or the switch, so I thought they're one of the eternal mysteries of the game.
Also I'm not entirely sure, to be honest, if I found Mine Key 2 or 3 in that niche, but what I know completely sure is that I had one of the keys, and in the niche, after crossing it through hex-editing the position location in the savegame, there was completely the same key, which made me wonder back then for which reason it's placed there.

I see. That's really interesting! I've never found the HoF scroll that way, but you may be right. For example, there's a niche in the Urbish Mining Company that sometimes holds a Great Maul. It's only there in about one in fifteen games or so. Please let me know more if you remember anything else! :D

I think I was able once to find the Zephyr Ring, but that wasn't in Castle Cimmeria but rather in of these first forests, in some tree hole. Never found it again there, though I searched all three holes completely in each game, so it seems that some stuff in game is random.

Although it is made so that it could be played in Ms-Dos (I have the game on original disks myself), I never got it to play in Ms-Dos, it crashes there or in DosBox everytime and there is absolutely no way to get it to run and not crash there. Maybe corrupted files on my version of the game-disks...

It runs without problems in Windows XP, though there are often problems with videos, after some time they slow heavily down and it takes many minutes to watch them to the end. Compatibility mode doesn't help, either.

I had really strange problems; sometimes the controls stalled, so I would be turning around for a short time. Also, the music stuttered.

Hello,

did anybody kill Scotia without Whole Truth? Now I fight her 3rd form and I think she is not entirely invulnerable. From time to time Baccata hits her for 4 damage and she even shows blood splashing. This way I killed the slug in the mine entrance but this slug showed two or three different shapes according to damage taken and Scotia's 3rd form does not.

My friend told me that he killed Scotia using Treant stick or Westwood stick (but he played this game ten years ago so he does not remember details any more).

Thanks a lot.

And thanks for such a great game.

You need to free king Richard and he'll give you the Shard of Truth (if I recall the name correctly), which you need to combine with the Necklace of Truth to get the Full Truth (or similar). When you use this one then on Scotia immediately, and before she transforms herself into one of the monsters, she won't transfer anymore and you can beat her to death. But when she transforms the third time in this mega worm, this one is invulnerable, you can't hurt him and he'll kill you.[/quote]

Well, I used a trick to prevent Scotia from moving; move away from her and try to lead her past the door (only from the east side) which you came through. She'll stop moving and will not attack anymore.

Be careful though, because she will start moving again after she has transformed or when you approach her from the west. She will not get stuck at all in her human form.

This way I've been able to beat on her with the Westwood Stick for hours, but with no result.

There is one other way to beat Scotia without the Whole Truth though, but it only works in the disk version (which you're probably playing anyway); whenever she transforms, throw a weapon or armor to her. She'll die instantly! The ending sequence is not triggered when using this method, though.

But how were you able to damage the Larkhon and Scotia with normal weapons?? I've never been able to do that! I only thought that throwing weapons and armor could harm them (aside from the Green Skull for the Larkhon, of course). How high was Baccata's Fighter level?

Greetingsss...
Lands is the first role-playing game I've played, so I spent months exploring it. There are still some things that I suspect to be the secrets (like "fancy lock"), but I think I know much about the game in general.
Here are some tricky things, would be interesting to hear whether Undertaker and other experienced fellows knew about it:

There is a chest with endless stuff (sabre "Gutter", one-jewelled cup, salve and bracers). It is located in Opinwood, near the entrance to the Swamps. It refills if you pass the areas like this: Opinwood -> Swamps -> Upper Opinwood -> Mines -> remote part of Opinwood and then back (without crossing secret walls between Orcs' and Centaurs' parts).

You can get to get into Mines without killing the Larkhon (so it is the third way, first two involve using Green Skull (someone mentioned Caustic Fog spell, but I strongly doubt one can get it without hex-code cheating) and throwing slashing/piercing (not blunt) weapons into it). To do that you should flee from one of the Mine entrances, cross both woods and Swamps and sneak to the staircase while Larkhon is still at the another side. When you try to get out, it turns out that it is already dead (or gone).

After you enter the small area on the 3rd floor of Cimmeria where you can meet Scotia, the door closes behind you, so if you don't have the Shard yet, it looks like you have lost. In fact, it is not true: you can push Scotia through one of the walls using the Hand of Fate spell or Dark Gauntlet. (Maybe this is not available in every version, though).

When you give Scotia Dawn's key, she places it in the wall on the 3rd floor of Cimmeria, below the humanoid figurine, and you aren't seem to able to get it (at least in the version I had few years ago). But Scotia is smart so she doesn't meet you if you don't have the key in your inventory. In one of the versions she just didn't appear, so you could visit Upper Opinwood freely, but the attack on Yvel did not begin as well. In the version I have currently, the key lifted a yard above the floor but wasn't transferred to Cimmeria (probably an incomplete patch which was aimed to move it direclty to Cimmeria). Then the attack on Yvel began in usual way.

Going to post more... And some questions, too, of course.

From time to time (one in ten or twenty blows) Baccata (and nobody else) strikes for four points of damage. He can do it even barehanded so it does not matter which weapon he wields. I think it's kind of "critical hit". Killing Larkhon was easy this way. Baccata fights and occasionally deals his 4-damage blows, the rest of party (including Baccata) heals him, when magical energy is depleted, go outside, rest, get back and continue with gnawing at Larkhon (if you stay close to him, he does not make "earthquake").

In similar way Baccata hurts transformed Scotia, she even bleeds. You can chase with her around a collumn and if you're nimble enough, you're hitting her and she's too slow to hit you.
Problem is that this is the slow way because Scotia has plethora of hit points. And if she has infinite hit points, your fight is futile and that's what I asked.

Another big Lands of Lore 1 fan, just like me! I didn't know the first trick you mentioned, but it sounds like a bug to me. I'll try it in the Cd version as soon as I can!

I knew about the 'sneaky' way to enter the Mines, but in my version the Larkhon stays alive; when you talk to the guy behind the desk, Baccata won't say that it's dead and the guy will stay where he is. When you exit the mines, you will appear at the same place where the Larkhon (which tried to follow you) is. This way you can exit the Mines as well.
You're saying it's impossible to hurt the Larkhon with blunt weapons? I ought to check that out, too!
The Caustic Fog spell you mentioned is actualy the spell you cast when you use the Green Skull. You can use a trainer to use it as a normal spell. All four levels of the spell are the same as the 'Green Skull-version'.

I also didn't know about that Dawn's key bug; I've played both the Cd and disk version though. I guess both were well-patched.

Just when I thought I knew everything about the game...

Did you know about this trick: pick the lock succesfully on the chest on White Tower Lv. 1 (the most left one) on the first attempt. You might be surprised...

Yesss, I knew about the Caustic Fog spell (never used trainers, but was editing save-files with bare hands). Just some of the previous posts made me think there is a way to get it in usual game.
And, of course, I have seen that shield with painted dragon(?).

But I haven't ever thrown mine key 2 across the pit, for example.

Have you ever seen an eagle great sword or great axe "Death"?
--------------
Well. The first topic where I have more questions than the answers. Some of the items have hidden or half-hidden properties which reveal itselves only when you use them for valueable amount of time.
I know that my examples don't sound impressing, but still there might be a chance for some of them to remain unnoticed. If you can add something to that list, it would be extremely interesting to me.
1. Bezel rings grant you protection from poison.
2. Emerald blades are extremely good weapons against ghostly creatures.
3. Same for Vaelan's cubes.
4. Great maul "Thunder" sometimes causes small earthquakes when you fail to hit your enemy.
5. Westwood stick sometimes delivers 1000 hit points' blows.
No need to respond if you already know this all *grins*.
But.
1. What about "stealth"-equipment? Does it help in any way as it is advertised?
2. What about fine-shaped swords (Flayer, Gnarl, Snarl, Gnash, Protector, Entropy)? Do they have any hidden properties or it's just a kind of garnment?
3. Does the hale leather jerkin have some special properties? (Its appearence and price make me think so.)

More questions will follow... And I am going to put here some information, too.

Maerryji

Does anyone know the way to make Dawn join you?
(At least, there is an evidence this was planned by Westwood. Those who have save-files editing expirience may know that there are bytes in character description whose values correspond to face. You may check that there is Dawn's face (blue-eyed Dawn, yes, not brown-eyed!): Start a new game, choose Conrad, save, open save file, find FBFF bytes (it's close to the character name), replace it with F9FF. Or there may be 0500, then replace it with 0700. At least, in both versions of Lands I have played it was possible.)

I have checked this (not with invulnerable creatures, though). In more than 100 times no one did a single successful blow being bare-handed. My opinion: you forgot to remove some weapon from Baccata's lower hand. It must be something very special if it may hurt Larkhon and shapeshifted Scotia, but this is more probable.
Or maybe Baccata delivers this "critical hit" only fighting with them. Or we just have different versions (in my version, all the creatures able to make the earthquakes do it from time to time even if you stay).

Gamefreak
14-10-2005, 06:38 AM
Yes, those earthquake-making creatures do it always if your characters wear some weapons, even if you stay close to the creatures. As soon as all the weapons have been dropped, they don't make earthquakes anymore (if I remember correctly). But start again if you pick the weapons up.

Undertaker

I believe you need no remove your shield as well to do any damage, because this way, you'll also hear a sound when you attack.

Yesss, tried both with and without shields. No lucky blows.

Toads in Cimmeria make earthquakes even if you stay without any weapons or shields.

What about my previous posts (maybe you didn't notice) about Dawn and about items' hidden features? Any ideas?
Undertaker, you also didn't mention whether you knew about the removable wall in Scotia's domain.

One more "Did you know": Did you know that items you drop into the sinkholes are not necessarily lost? There is a place or two in swamps where part of such items appear.

Gamefreak
15-10-2005, 08:21 AM
Of course those items aren't lost. As far as I can remember, you can drop items in tree stumps or sinkholes in the swamp, and once you click on the sinkholes, you pick the item up again. The party doesn't have such luck there ;)

Yes, my post was not entirely correct. Earthquaking creatures do earthquake even if you stay close to them, but imho not so often as when you stay further.

I have examined Baccata's "critical hits" (against transformed Scotia, not against Larkhon) and you're right, the key is... (insert fanfare here) SABRE "CUTTER"! (and no hit at all with bare hands). But only in hand of Baccata, not Paulson's. Baccata is figher level 8 and Paulson only 7, but when I battled Larkhon, Baccata's fighter level was much lower so I think it does not depend on figher level, but on Baccata.

Ah, yes. Sorry about that. No, I didn't know about both of these facts. Thank you, guys! I always appreciate new knowledge about the Lands!

Sorry, I didn't notice your 'hidden features' post! I can't believe it; it never happened to me before!

Now (finally) some little comments about the list! :D

1. Bezel rings also grant protection from being aslept (in the Swamps)
2. Yes, I knew. I think it does around 3x or even 4x damage! :D
3. I also knew this one. Does around 100 damage, I think.
4. Great Maul 'Thunder' is supposed to do triple damage in 25% of each hit. I have never seen this happen. The growl you hear might have something to do with it.
5. Hehe. The good ol' Westwood stick. Useful for killing Scotia in her human form, since she seem to have some sort of warding, so she suffer minimal damage from magic and weapons. Also, she doesn't have a decent evade.

1. The stealth equipment, yes... There are still many unanswered questions about those. I believe they decrease the enemies line of sight and make you unhearable, but I cannot confirm this. If this is true, they should be useful in the 3rd Tower level, since, unlike other creatures, ghosts are all around you (since they are ethereal). Also, I don't know if you must spread the equipment among your team members to be effective.
They might also have something to do with increasing hit/evade percentages.
2. The great sword 'Entrophy' hits the bearer every 7th strike (as taken from www.ethereallore.com). I don't know about the others, but I have been suspecting hidden properties, too.
3. Not that I know of, but everything is possible!

The great sword 'Eagle' and the great Axe "Death" have been removed from the game, I think, simply because they haven't ever been found. Great Maul 'Armaggeddon' is also such a weapon. Great Bow 'Tempest' and 'Darkness' can be found in treasure chest in Castle Cimmeria and can only be reached with a trainer.

You might want to check out http://37852.rapidforum.com/. It's a German forum, but we (I'm also a member) also have a lot of information about Lands 1-3. Also, We have plans to make a fan game, but it has been halted, because EA (the current owner of Westwood) forbids us to do so.

THAT was a long post! :max:

Damn, I forgot about the Dawn subject!

Yes, I've seen a screenshot with Dawn as the first character as well, but I believe it's nothing more than a nicely done Paint job.

If someone DOES know more about this, PLEASE let me know! :ok:

You're welcome. Same here, hehe.

Sleeping and little injuries caused by swamp gas is what I've considered as poison, so I didn't mention it. Of course you're right.

The eagle great sword and the great axe "Death" are owned by four ghostly soldiers in Cimmeria, near the branch gates. Not always, same as maidens' longswords Gnarl, Snarl, and Gnash, but probably still available in every version.

Thank you for the additional information.

Let's go on.

Also the helm "Talamar" costs surprisingly high (150 s.c. in the last "shop" in Cimmeria). Same for George's kite shield (500 s.c. vs 50 s.c. for dwarven kite shield, but I believe it was a mistake).

What about that empty niche in Dungeons where all the items you put into are simply lost (at least it seems so)? Also, there is a place near NE corner where you hear a sound of opening wall or something like this. Does anyone know what does it all mean?

I am going to provide some information which does not have high value for those who forgets about the game once it's done. I believe that mostly it is known by the experienced players, so it won't surprise them, too. On the other hand, it makes playing easier... and for me it wasn't easy to learn the second part.

First, the game has two ways of control: you can do everything using a mouse, but running and fighting is what you can do with only a keyboard (well, since the early versions keys F5, F6, F7, F8 do not cause any magic, but F1, F2, F3 are still available). So there are three possibilities, each fits its own situation.
a) Running-and-doing your quest (opening doors, chests, pressing buttons, trading etc.). Use arrow keys (7,8,9, sometimes maybe 4,6, of course at the right part of your keyboard) (left hand) and mouse in this case.
b) Running-and-fighting, when you just need to struggle your way through the packs of annoying but weak monsters. Use F1-F2-F3 (left hand) and arrow keys then.
c) Tough fighting - then you surely need a mouse, but still F1-F2-F3 are convenient.

Second, there are ways to make the fighting easier. There are two weapons that never fail: crossbow "Valkyre" and... a rock (when you throw it). (Exception: sometimes items become "unthrowable". I do not know why does it happen, but it is easy to notice that you can no longer throw your rock away. Then you can find another.) Of course, rock isn't usable to do considerable damages (though lesser Orcs die after 4-5 blows), but...
But the Lands' monsters have not only health but also shields. Health is constant for all creatures of the same kind, shields' value varies around half of the health. To kill the monster, you need to chop its shields off first. So if monster dies in a single blow, you can be sure this blow was no less than shields+health of that monster.
But shields always fade after a single lucky blow. If it was below shields' value, monster remains in full health, otherwise it becomes wounded...
Now you can see that even rocks may be useful against powerful monsters... Of course, not Larkhon, great Orcs and other creatures immune to bashing.

The Bezel ring: yeah, you're right about that. I didn't think about that that way! :D

Eagle/Death: Around those grates, huh? I'm sure I've never found the Eagle Sword, but I might have found the Death Axe (somehow, it rings a bell now you mentioned the grates).

The helm "Talamar" might have something to do with increasing your magic or something, but I've never noticed any differences.

I don't know much about the niches in the Dungeons. I believe you could find disappeared items somewhere on the floor...
I also noticed that 'wall-shoving'-sound in the north east. I've searched a very long time, with no result, but after I used a trainer to get behind the wall I found... a stair to the Yvel Woods! This part of the wood is located behind Vulture's Chasm and is not fully completed. You can find an Ace of Oblivion and some kind of wand as well. It appears there was supposed to be a shortcut out of the Dungeons, but it didn't make it to the final release.
So my guess is that stepping on that invisible plate opens and closes the wall.

What you're saying about the shields really surprises me. I thought those shields were mere decorations. Do you also know if a creature uses a weapon (like some Orcs do) also do more damage?
Also, when a shield is destroyed, does that creature's appearence change? It would be very strange if I wouldn't have noticed that! :D

Did you knew about 'undead mode'? It works like this:

Make sure all but one of your party members are dead. Now, when the last character receives a mortal blow, quickly press escape and save your game (in an empty slot, of course). Now reload the game. All your characters will still be dead, but the game continues like normal (ie. creatures try to attack you). You can still hurt the creatures by throwing rocks/weapons/armor. You can go back to normal mode by reviving one of your characters with an item.

This trick can easily be done by attacking on of the Gladstone guards; since they hit you so hard, it takes a while for your health meter to reach 0. This way you have more time to press escape.
After you kill the Gladstone guards, you have four nice Halberds! :max:

Gamefreak

I think if you kill the guards, the doors in Gladstone that lead to drawn locations like the king's chamber will be closed, thus the game wouldn't be continueable anymore.

Well, I have heard about that part of forest behind the Vulture Chasm, now it becomes more clear. Thank you.

About the shields - I meant another thing: creatures' lives and deathes depend not only on one parameter I call "health", but on two parameters, and I call the second one "shields". First blow, if it isn't strong enough, destroys only shields, and further blows deal with health(HP).
For example, lizard in Southern forest has 40 HP. It won't die after two 21-HP damages because of shields, but if you make a 2-HP scratch and then add two 20-HP blows, it would. That's how you can use rocks.
To kill that lizard in a single blow you have to make somewhere about 60-70 HPs' damage. (Just check this: sometimes Ak'shel would fail to kill it when he casts Spark:'IV' and then 'I', but he always kills it using 'I' and then 'IV').
Parameter I call "shields" has no bearing to the appearence (although it is possible that orcs equipped with shields have more "shields" than the other ones, or they evade/block blows better).

When I added myself some health and magic (just a couple of thousands), I was able to get those halberds.

These are rather obvious information but I'll post them anyway:

1) Jade necklace ads +1 to rogue level.
2) Amber ring adds bonus of 5 to protection.
3) Crossbow "Valkyrie" shoots fireballs but this fireball DOES NOT ignite gas in Mines (in the place where you smell it).
4) Trident "Plague" decreases your fighter level by 1.

I got one more question:

I don't know why but in Replication room in Catwalk Caverns I was able to replicate only items made of paper (miscellanous scrolls and Aces). Did somebody experience something like this?

Mateej, your points 1), 2), and 4) are indeed obvious - you can see the difference just when you wear/remove those items.

Some items indeed cannot be duplicated. I am sure about emerald blades, Dark Gauntlet, Crucible of Faith. But most of the items (including the great sword "Justice") were replicable for me.

Shields: Thank you for clearing this up. This is very interesting information!

Gladstone guards: wow, I've never been able to beat them, but then again, I've never really tried. With which character are you playing?

Duplication bug: I've never experienced this! What version are you playing?

Did you know the infinite might/protection bug? It's made up from two different bugs. In the Cd version one of the bugs is fixed, but it can still be done.

This is taken from www.ethereallore.com. I've contributed this myself! :D

Go to White Tower Lv.3 (or Castle Cimmeria Lv.1 but that is too far away and too late in the game to really make use of this cheat) and go to the only pit in the level (the pit which drops you off at the minotaur on Level 2). Save your game.
Make sure the pit is open. Wait for a ghost to appear over the pit.
Now, place a weapon or armor (preferably Great Sword 'Justice' or the Kite Shield) on the pit, so that the weapon or armor falls through. The ghost will have disappeared.
Click on the pit and you'll get your weapon/armor back (keep trying, it might be hard to find the right spot). Place it into your inventory. Keep clicking on the pit and you will get more copies! Get a number of five of the same weapon, or four of the same armor.
Go to Victor's Arms or the weapon seller in the swamp.

Equip your party with all copies and sell the remaining one.

Go outside and check your characters. Where the equipment was are now items named 'illegal item'. Take them all off and place them in your inventory (NEVER place two or more copied items or illegal items on the floor--the game will crash). While doing this, your might/protection will not decrease and will remain the same as when you were equipped.

Get back in the shop and re-buy the same weapon/armor. Your 'illegal items' will re-change to the copied equipment.

Repeat the last three steps for infinite might/protection.

You can still get the trick going in the CD version; equip yourself with all copied items and sell the remaining one as usual. Buy the equipment back (or choose another item to copy). Now, go back to copy your equipment and repeat. To get rid of "illegal items," donate them to the "Stone Idol: Ra’ToI the Fortunate" in the swamps (refer to the map). It just costs a lot more time, but you also get infinite money this way.

Watch out for enemies that grab your weapons and drop them on the floor--remember, if two or more copied items or illegal items are on the floor, the game crashes.

This trick is best done with Great Sword 'Justice' or the Kite Shield, because you can re-buy them in the shops.

If a character now wears no weapons or shields, it can damage enemies with his bare hands!

Some more facts:

Not every character does the same damage with the same spell. The order of magic power from weak to strong is:
Kieran - Timothy/Baccata/Lora/Paulson - Ak'shel - Conrad - Michael

Ak'shel is only slightly more powerful than Timothy and the others.

The fact that Michael is such a strong spellcaster is most likely a bug, imho; it doesn't make sense and it makes him overpowered. Why? Read on...

Note that the more damage you do, the more experience you receive. Because of this, when Michael reaches Mage level 2 (so that he can cast higher level Spark spells), he'll be a kick behind mage!
When your character levels up, you don't always receive the same amount of increased HP/MP. So if you just leveled up with Michael to Mage level 2, check his MP. If the max MP is 25 or higher, you can cast level 4 Spark. If not, you should reload and level up again.
After this, he'll even level up faster to level 3 than he did to level 2!
This also accounts for his fighter level, obviously. This makes it very easy to level up Michael.

If you have problems getting Michael to Mage level 2, you should do this: in Roland's Manor, cast Spark against the Orcs and retreat outside. Rest, re-enter and cast Spark again. Kill all the Orcs this way. After that, you'll only need a couple of more kills with spark to level up.
Conrad can easily make it to level 2 this way, btw.

The values for leveling up are:

Fighter level
12-25 HP

Rogue level
2- 12 HP

Mage level
1-6 HP
12-25 MP
18-37 MP for Ak'shel

I'm not sure about the fighter level's increase (the max seems true for most characters), the minimal MP increase (including Ak'shel's). Any confirmation is welcome! :ok:

Undertaker, to beat guards I added myself (editing save-file) Mist of Doom spell, about 500 HPs and 2000 MPs. No matter what character you're using then *giggles*.

Well, I must note that I didn't know about the existing way to get the item copies, but I surely knew about consequences you described. Yes, when more than one item point to the same number in the list, you shouldn't sell them (others become illegals), and you shouln't put them into one place as well (usually the game crashes). Yes, cheating with switched items and removing a weapon when you have less might than it gives (which is possible with items-cheating, for example, replacing (in save-file) a dagger in your hand with the "Justice" without any other changes) grants you "infinite" (in fact, about 32000 or 65000) value of Might. Yes, this gives you an ability to deliver deadly blows, even being bare-handed. But cheating with protection seems less effective (at least, it looks like protection 256 is the same as 0).

Now about different magical power. I already know that Ak'shel is weaker mage than Conrad and Michael, but I am not sure whether there's a difference between Michael, Conrad, Baccata, Paulson etc. It seems wrong to me, I must check this.
About HPs and MPs per level: I've never seen 25 or even 24 HPs per fighter rank, but I surely have seen 5. My opinion is that mage rank gives you 1-6 (one die), rogue rank - 2-12 (2 dice), fighter rank - 4-24 (4 dice). For fighter rank chance to see the border values is too low (1/1296), so you can hardly notice them.

Michael and Kieran can easily get 2-3 mage levels (above 1st) just using a couple of fireball wands against hornets/skeletons. This is EXTREMELY fast experiencing, trust me. Much move convenient than dealing with the orcs.

Maerryji
17-10-2005, 04:10 AM
Forgot to say about mana points per rank. I am not sure about lower bounds, but it seems that Ak'shel gains 25-37 and everyone else - 16-25.

Maerryji
17-10-2005, 06:46 AM
Undertaker, seems we both were wrong. Michael and Conrad's spells indeed more powerful than Paulson's etc. But Ak'shel is even weaker than Paulson and others (though amount of mana makes him good mage). It seems that the coefficients for spells' damage are the same as the coefficients for their might WRT weapons' power.

Well, to be more exact, Baccata's and Paulson's (probably Lora and Timothy's, too) Spark:'IV' make 60-HPs damages, Michael's - 90, Conrad's - 85, Ak'shel's - 56, and Kieran's - 49 (*).
Analysing the save-files data, I got the values for their power coefficient:
BP - 1, M - 3/2(1.5), C - 183/128(1.43), A - 15/16(0.94), K - 211/256(0.82).
Multiplying this by 60 and taking the integer part, we will have the values (*).
Now about the second meaning of this coefficient:
Supposing that the power coefficient also affects characters' might and comparing (*) to their might with "Justice": BP - 60, M - 97, C - 88, A - 56, K - 52 (**), we get the probable values of the might bonus: BP and A - 0, M - 7, C and K - 3 (there were some more reasons for this proposition).
Now I think I have the formula for might:
might = power coefficient * weapon power + bonus.
Checking this for dagger (power 10) an longsword (power 20) shows that formula seems to be correct.
It follows that weapon power is the same as Paulson's might with this weapon, so if you doubt you can easily check this for other weapons. Please inform me if you find a mistake.

Just... wow. Could you show me how to look at the savegames like that? All I've been able to do is to open them with hex-edit!

I was sure Ak'shel was slightly more powerful, but this proves otherwise.
