Just... wow. Could you show me how to look at the savegames like that? All I've been able to do is to open them with hex-edit!
Did you read about the plans to make a fangame? It's been halted because EA won't allow us to do so. But when we continue the project, this will prove to be valuable information. Would you like to join the project then?Thank you. As I said, it is the result of the analysis. Changing one or two bytes, comparing, changing again... Nothing but hex-edit and own mind as the tools. There isn't much work when the effect is clear (though there are still many bytes I cannot understand yet). At present I can say I understand most of the characters' personal information, know how to manage items and spells in album. Not that much, but I keep exploring.
Thank you for your offer. Yesss, it would be pleasing to join your project, though I cannot promise I will always have enough time. Well, we will see.
In case of troubles with this forum, I have the email address:
[EDITED]
(please don't forget to insert the word "Lands" into the subject).

Don't worry about having enough time, because we all have that problem! :ok:
Do you by chanche know the effects of leveling up, aside from increasing HP/MP? I have always wondered about that. I suppose Fighter will increase fighting damage, Rogue hit/evade %, recovery time and possibly bow/crossbow/throwing damage and Mage magic damage. The reason that I'm unsure is that these effects either don't exist or are very, very small.
My email address and MSN is [EDITED]

I've looked up some values I came up with some moths ago:
Timothy/Baccata/Lora/Paulson: 100%
Kieran: 100% * 5/6 + 2
Ak'shel: 100% * 14/15 (not bad for a dracoid!)
Conrad: 100% * 17/12 + 5
Michael: 100% * 89/60 + 8
I have never fully checked these values, but they seemed true for the dagger and Justice. But things change now you cleared up that you have to take the integer values, instead of rounding down or up.
You're right about all of these values. Mine are not far off, except for Conrad's! :wall:

...
You've found it without hex-codes? Congratulations, very good estimation. I am not absolutely sure about my bonus values (inside the file there are different values. I can explain how they can produce 7,3, and 0, but no proof...), so maybe it's you who are right here.
Taking the integer value is the same as truncation towards 0.
Looks like mage level affects the time for recovering. No extra damage, as far as I know (I will check this soon). Not sure about the extra damages or chance to make successful blow for fighter and rogue levels - this might be true, but no easy way to check.
I've heard the opinion that high rogue level also helps you to find the items in trunks etc. (in addition to picking the locks).
By the way, there seem to be 2 hollows in Southern forest, 2 stumps in Yvel woods and 2 other in Upper Opinwood where I've never found anything. So the most noticeable items available in such places are: an axe, green skull, two bezel rings, 3-stoned bezel cup, star "Polaris", green skull, wand of Lightning... Can anyone remember other items, of course not salves, aloe, ginseng, oil, swarms and coins?

I have learned that the recovery time for magic and physical strikes is not the same (for Kieran and possibly for all others). Also there's no matter what fighter and mage level does character have, but the rogue level causes fighter recovery time shortening. :max:
Undertaker

About the might modifiers: I believe yours are more accurate, if not correct.
When you succesfully strike a monster, your recovery time is cut in about 1/3. In the disk version, when you made it to Rogue level 7 (without item bonusses) you're recovery time will be about equal to that recovery time. Kieran either always strikes with that speed or somewhere around that.
This speed bonus was nerfed in the Cd version though...
Rogue level also helps to pick locks (duh). I don't know about item finding, but it might be true; when I played the game some years ago, I always leveled up a lot. I usually found one Bezel Ring in a tree hole. But nowadays I don't level up much and I can't seem to find it...
In one of the posts here is a guy that thought he had once found the Zephyr Ring in a tree hole. The Zephyr ring can be found in a chest behind the door with the Fancy Lock, so it can't be found normally. It cuts your recovery time in 1/3.
It could be a theory that, if your Rogue level is high enough, this ring can be found in a tree hole.
But it's more likely he confused it with the Bezel Ring! :D
Now onto something completely different...
Do you remember that button in Castle Cimmeria level 2, that didn't seem to do anything? It's in the south part of the level, on a north wall. Well, it indeed does nothing, but behind it is a chest with a Cloud Ring. The effects of this ring are still unknown...
Gamefreak
17-10-2005, 12:30 PM
I was able to find the Zephyr ring, too, and I still remember that the recovery time after a hit was pretty decreased for Maikel with that ring, as if he would be Kieran. I don't remember when I found it, though, but the ring can be found normally.

Seems now I understand how to check the delay values. The results will follow (maybe not today).
The button that dissapears when you press it? Clear, thank you.
Maybe you also know something about these four buttons along a corridor on Tower's second floor?

I think that if Bezel ring saves the owner from poisons and other negative effects, then maybe Cloud or one of the other rings saves the owner from stun ()?

No, the button doesn't disappear. It seems to me that the wall should move, so that you can reach it, but it doesn't.
I have no idea what the buttons in the Tower are supposed to do. I'll check all possible combinations (that's only 2^4 = 16 possible combinations).
I checked the ring, but you still get stunned! Maybe the entire chest was just removed from the game, and the ring never got any special properties.

I experimented with them earlier once when I was playing the game. The only effect I was able to produce with one of the combinations is a fireball flying in short intervals through the corridor from the side of where the pits are behind the illusionary wall that hurts party and mosters likewise. Got one of those weird chickens once, with two hits... *g*

Now I think I have the formula for might:
might = power coefficient * weapon power + bonus.
Please inform me if you find a mistake.
Well, did it myself. According to that formula, Ak'shel cannot have might 10 with a dagger. My apologizes.
Now I propose the adjusted one (which also corresponds to the save-files data):
First, character's might depends on his hand's shape. Human's and thomgog's hands have might 1, mage's hand has might 3/4 , and cat's paw has only 1/2.
Second, there are bonuses for the characters:
BP - 0, M - 5, C - 2, A - 1, K - 5.
Third, there are power coefficients for them:
BP - 1, M - 3/2(1.5), C - 183/128(1.43), A - 5/4(1.25), K - 211/128(1.65).
So the formula must be
might = [[(weapon power + bonus) * hand's might] * power coefficient],
where [x] means the integer part of x.
Note that double truncation is necessary only for Ak'shel and Kieran.
By the way I am not Reanimator...

Yeah, sorry about that. i wanted to quote two people! :D
I just got the game off of Ebay, the CD version, and I'm playing it on a 98 Box except the sound quality isn't good at all, I have to go and use midi which does the game no justice. If there is anything anyone could do that would be great
Gamefreak
24-10-2005, 10:38 PM
I'm afraid you'll have to stay with the MIDI music. It's the only kind of music this game has... :)
Undertaker
25-10-2005, 08:18 AM
The game does NOT only have midi music! You should run the game with VDMsound. It works great for me; the only flaws it has it that it's slows down the music and sometimes the sound stutters. The slowing down of the music might be causes by the fact I only have a P500...

What do you mean? Lands of Lore 1 does have only MIDI music that sounds better with MIDI soundcard than with the Soundblaster MIDI. Only Lands of Lore 2 has the digital music. I would know, as I have both games on CD...

Me too! I might be mistaking, because I'm not a techie. But if you listen to Lands of Lore 1 MIDI's, you'll notice that it doesn't sound exactly like the actual in-game music.
Yeah I noticed it when you heal people and when you attack, and even the music is slightly different, but if VDM sound works then I'll have to give it a shot thanks

Well, the MIDI music in the game is not General MIDI format like MID or RMI, it's an XMI music, Extended MIDI format I think, so it sounds often better than the synthetical General MIDI. But it is nevertheless MIDI music. ;)

Here are the data on delays I promised long ago.
There are three sorts of delays: the delay after shots or failed blows (x), the delay after successful blows (y), and the delay after spellcasting (z).
The first delay depends on rogue level and also on character. For all characters except Kieran x=10 (about 2.5 or 3 seconds) at levels 1-3, x=9 at levels 4-7, and x=7 at levels 8-10. For Kieran x=7 at levels 1-7 and x=6 at levels 8-10. Note that rogue enhancers like jade necklace do not matter.
The second delay is equal to 4, regardless the rogue level your character has.
Zephyr ring divides all these delays by 2 (with taking an integer part, so Kieran would always have x=3 and y=2, others have x=5 or x=4 at lower rogue levels and x=3 since 8th).
The third delay always equals to 8, though maybe some items modify it.
Mistakes aren't expected but possible.

I have examined Baccata's "critical hits" (against transformed Scotia, not against Larkhon) and you're right, the key is... (insert fanfare here) SABRE "CUTTER"! (and no hit at all with bare hands). But only in hand of Baccata, not Paulson's. Baccata is figher level 8 and Paulson only 7, but when I battled Larkhon, Baccata's fighter level was much lower so I think it does not depend on figher level, but on Baccata.
I have checked this against Lahrkon, too. Indeed, only Baccata has such ability. It doesn't look like fighter level matters here, but probably the higher is your rogue level the more often are successful blows (at level 10, about 1/2 of all blows were successful).
I have found three weapons giving Baccata this ability: sabre "Cutter", sabre "Gutter", and axe "Slitter".
Indeed, the damage is always 4 (sometimes 8 if you wield two such weapons).
Throwing the weapon or armor (any weapon, including blunt ones, but not rocks) may damage Lahrkon as well.
And, of course, if you are true rogue, you can easily kill it with westwood stick (no matter who uses it).

I have visited www.ethereallore.com.
Well, I must note that there is some useful information (for example, extra might Baccata has with the sabre "Cutter" explains why can he damage Larkhon (or Lahrkon)), but also many mistakes.
I think I have more correct data on the monsters' health, resistances etc. It needs additional verifying though...

Hey, you are superfreaks of this game here. I didn't know what was the "Larkhon" thing till I looked for it at some walkthrough, and then I discovered it was that giant worm over the Urbish mines. When I played the game lots of years ago I indeed killed it by throwing maces or swords to it, not using the green skulls as it is supposed to be. Tried the same with Scotia, but she always killed me before I could do so with her. Is it possible to kill her in such way or she has so many HP that it is in fact impossible? Anyway, brilliant game, one of the RPGs I love.
That was me in the previous post, don't know why sometimes I don't seem to get logged.

NP, spare your head!
I have already told this: one wall in Scotia's domain is removable. You need to push Scotia through it using the dark gauntlet or Hand of Fate spell (there's only one point she wouldn't enter if you don't push her, this is correct one). Then you can lead her around a column once again and run to any place on the floor. She will be stalking you.

Does anyone know the way to make Dawn join you?
(At least, there is an evidence this was planned by Westwood. Those who have save-files editing expirience may know that there are bytes in character description whose values correspond to face. You may check that there is Dawn's face (blue-eyed Dawn, yes, not brown-eyed!): Start a new game, choose Conrad, save, open save file, find FBFF bytes (it's close to the character name), replace it with F9FF. Or there may be 0500, then replace it with 0700. At least, in both versions of Lands I have played it was possible.)
I kind of overlooked this post... could you tell me what changes this edit bring? Do you actually have Dawn in your party? Or does this just changes the portrait? And what happens if Dawn speaks? Does she have her own voice?
Maerryji
30-10-2005, 10:45 AM
This only changes the portrait. I doubt there's a way to make her join us, so this must be just the trace of a script branch which is absent in the released game.
I don't have any voices in my current version, but as far as I remember you may switch them, too (at least, screams' sounds). There might be two woman's screams if this was prepared too. But I don't think CD version has the extra speach for the removed script parts.
But I will be happy to hear that there is correct way to make Dawn join us.

As far as I know, first versions of Lands I had processor type checking which failed if you have Pentium or something better. There could be patches fixing it but if you don't find them you may try to change it by yourself:
Open main.exe using hex-editor. Find the symbols (in hex-code)
C3 74 13 66 B8 01
and replace them with
-- EB -- -- -- --
(address 0002919C in disk version and 00054FC2 in CD version).
Advice was taken directly from the Russian forums, and I think I have applied it once successfully.
Hope it doesn't break any laws.

Probably the thing I have just discovered will be extremely interesting for all the Lands I fans and for anyone who would not mind to play it once again.
If you know Quake I, you may also know that there are 3 complexity levels (easy, normal, and hard), same as for Lands. But there is one more level not visible in the game menu. It is called "Nightmare" and you can set it only using a console command. Reanimator once supposed that Lands I also can have such mode, although he had no clues and proposed no ways for checking this.
Still he deserves respect as long as his prediction turned out to be correct.
Please spread this information as wide as you can:
There is "nightmare" mode in Lands I. In disk version to turn it on you should:
load the game or start a new one, set sounds, music, and floating cursor off, smooth scrolling on, monsters ferocious, and save the game. Then open the save-file with hex-editor, find position (all numbers are hexadecimal) 00000253 (or close to it) with the symbol 28 (character "(") and replace it with 38 (character "8"). Load the game and check game controls. There must be written that "Monsters are [Main menu]". Now restore the settings you like (except the "Monsters are" paragraph) and enjoy the nightmare!
(CD version probably allows this too but I am not sure about the symbol to find and the value to set. Going to find this out as soon as possible.)

In CD version this symbol is at position (hex)0000025E. With the default settings, it is 1B, with ferocious monsters - 2B and to make them nightmare-like you should set it to 3B.
Nightmare monsters in disk version strike fast like a hurricane, and in CD version their blows don't seem to miss.

Ehm, could someone give me a little help with hex-editing? I've opened the savegame with the correct options with the Freeware Hex Editor XVI32. Now I see a lot of fields. To the left there's a field with a vertical list of numbers: 0, 11, 22 etc. In the middle are a lot of fields with the usual stuff: 41, 6B, 21 etc. To the right is a weird field that has the name of my savegame, "Ak'shel Nightmare" and a lot of squares.
Now, I can't find the number (2B; I have the Cd version) you mentioned anywhere. I also don't understand what (hex)0000025E means. I suppose it has something to do with the left column, but it doens't have any 25E...

Maerryji

I don't have the hex-editor you mentioned but probably my doesn't differ much.
The left column must contain addresses of the string (i.e., 1st 16 symbols in the file are marked with 00000000, next 16 - with 00000010 etc.). This is hexadecimal number, so 11th string should be marked with 000000A0. Address 0000025E mean you must find a 15th symbol in the string labelled with 00000250 (E is 15th because 0 is the 1st). For the disk version this address is 253, so you would need 4th symbol in that string.
There should be a symbol representing game settings. If you have default settings (music:on sound:on monsters:normal smooth scrolling:on floating cursor:off) its value must be (hex)1B. For nightmare mode, you need its first digit to be 3 (3B would do). This works for both CD and disk version.
In the middle column in hex-editor screen you can edit the hex-codes of the symbols The right part contains the same symbols "as is".
Damnation, Reanimator seems to be right. So there's no effective nightmare mode in CD version.
Undertaker
31-10-2005, 05:30 PM
That would mean this mode is even easier that Wimpy mode, since you can just step back and let monsers come to you. :wall:
Does the disk version have this too?
Maerryji
31-10-2005, 05:39 PM
No, in disk version it doesn't look like this mode affects the probability to strike successfully (neither your nor monsters'). For sure, both monsters and characters sometimes miss.

Hehe. I made a mistake: I didn't fully shove one of the bars in Audio Control to the left: but now it works fine.

I've noticed Undertaker's thread about making the game more complicated at
http://37852.rapidforum.com/area=3
It is a bit too long for me to read, but I publish my own methods for anyone's interested. (I've also heard some of Reanimator's cruel ideas, but telling them is up to him.)
Usually I play without using wands, aces, guardians, and curing items (I was always too greedy to use them anyway), without using Vaelan's cube against ghosts (it's too easy).
I do not pick Timothy and do not use Lora's fighting abilities (Sadie won't pay me for training her niece and I don't need that as well).
Later I stopped picking a lantern and an atlas, sometimes even a compass.
Ferocious level became default long ago, but now I think the age of another difficulty level begins.
Of course, all these self-restrictions are optional for me.
There's Reanimator's idea I liked much: passing the game as fast as possible. (Loading the games is allowed but the time you've spent is counted even if you want to replay something).
With some of my usual restrictions which had just became habits, my best time is 2h25m.
So Lands I is not too long game after you spent years playing it!

Hehe. Nice find! This one's a little odd: you can pick this one up by clicking on the rock, but only if you've entered the square behind it (by a cheat). I don't know wheather this is a bug, or that you're not supposed to get this weapon at all. But my guess is that it is a bug; there are very few mauls compared to swords. But then again, halberds are kind of rare, too.
The Hale Leather Jerkin: wow, even though you said where it was, it took me a while to find it. You guys have a sharp eye! :sneaky:
The "stairs down shortcut" -bug in White Tower level 2 (disk version only): in the dark room, get the Mystic Key from the niche. After that, place any item in the niche, open the door and press the butten. The wall will change and another button will appear (kind of like in the Draracle's Caves, to get to the Jeweled Dagger). Keep pressing the buttons until you see a stair. You can still press the button a couple of times, without having it disappear. This stair is actually the stairs down back to level 1. If you walk in it backwards, you'll take the stairs down.
Did anyone ever get a Halberd from the Pentrogs in the part with the Orcs in Opinwood? I once got two from both, but I've never found them again.

Finishing the game as fast as possible? I've never tried that. I almost finished the game in 4 days time, if it weren't for the flu! :ranting:
But then I did everything and didn't rush anything.
I once finished the game without atlas and compass, but I always take the lantern (dark screens are bad for the eyes). In the same game, I didn't cast a single spell, except for igniting gas in the Mines! Try to get past the Necro Saps in the Catwalk Caverns! :sneaky:
But I play Lands of Lore mainly for fun, so I don't do this very often! :D

It's not a bug. You are allowed to get the items from under the walls if you know where they are. Also, you are allowed to pick the item from a closed niche if you have put it there yourself (or if you've seen it, not sure about this).
Yesss, of course. Its probability is less than 10% but there are 3-5 centaurs (all right, Pentrogs) who can have it.
Even if you have solved all the puzzles (well, all the puzzles I know solutions for), killed all the monsters, looted all chests, visited all shops, checked both Jewelled dagger and Silver goblet ways, had a luck with that chest on the Tower's 1st floor, you still can't be sure you know all the items.
Here is the list of the items you need a luck to find (at least, in disk version):
1. Horseshoe
2. Halberd (if you are loyal and do not consider Gladstone guards as "monsters")
3. Great maul
4. Sickle
5. Worn key
6. Long sword "Gnarl"
7. Long sword "Snarl"
8. Long sword "Gnash"
9. Great sword "Trouble"
10. Dwarvish scale mail
11. Ebony key
12. Eagle great sword
13. Great axe "Death"
There are also items you can only get using a cheat (no fair way known):
1. Great maul "Pillage"
2. Zephyr ring
3. Bow "Tempest"
4. Cloud ring *
5. Great bow "Darkness" *
(thanks to Undertaker for *)

In the square to the right of the right treisure chest behind the "you have no faith" door, there's a Long Sword and a Scale Male.
I guess all this stuff was just left behind by the programmers, because they didn't care about 'cleaning it up'. I can't blame them for that! :D

If you know where the item is (in-game, i.e., you've seen it already) you can get it even if it's under wall or in closed niche. That's the way I always get humanoid figurine.
Check this in any place where the closing walls are: put something to the floor there, leave and try to get it when the wall appears.

Ah, my mistake. I meant the third White Tower level, in the square to the right of the right treisure chest behind the "You have no Faith" door. Are you still following me? :D
Behind the door in the north east in the third White Tower level, there is a door you can only open if you have the Crucible of Faith in your inventory. Behind the door are two treisure chests. The items are in the square to the right of the right treisure chest.

I'm please to see you're all trying to contribute (by gathering data for the game), but in general multiple posts are something people should try to avoid. Undertaker, there are indeed two scale mails (both are in the chests in Draracle cave level 3) but it's not a reason to laugh at you. I also haven't found it in the place you described but maybe you aren't wrong. There might be special conditions for them to appear. Well, maybe you can just check it again?
(By the way, does your trainer let you move through the walls only within the same area or you can cross them? If you need I can tell you the position of level-byte in save file.)
One more useless but nice secret: did you know that there are "mirror areas" for Northern and Southern forests? It means there is a place in Northland forest which mirrors the Southern one and vice versa. I've found it with HET (hex-editing techniques) but probably trainers can reach it, too.

I don't completely understand what you mean here. I guess you mean skipping entire levels by crossing area's. No, I can't do that but my trainer allows me "unlimited movement"; I can just pass through walls the same way ghosts would do. I will check out the location again soon! :ok:
Yes, I know about the mirror area's :D ! My first guess was that the programmer's intention was to put both levels in one, but it would be pointless to do that for BOTH levels. But it's cool nonetheless.
Did you know about the little area behind Vulture's Chasm in the Yvel Woods? :max:
I did know about the Great Maul "Armaggeddon"; it's in the item list at www.ethereallore.com! :D
But isn't Axe "Splitter" a common axe? I know there's Axe "Slitter" and I think there was another axe named something like that. But I'm unsure about this...
About the titles: yes, I have to agree here. The titles are not very friendly towards newcomers. I wonder what I'll be called next when I hit the 100 posts... :tai:

To teleport between the areas you can use HET. The addres of byte which represents level is 0000025E (disk version) or 00000269 (CD version). Acceptable values are 01-1D. Tower level 3 is 15. Together with trainer it would be useful.
I think you're right about the mirror areas. So when it was decided to put them to different places programmers have just made a copy and updated the design for it without changing the maps.
First one who told me about the area behind Vulture's Chasm was Reanimator.
But he didn't mention any links with Dungeons there.
Your next title is "tech wizz".

OK - first off I apologize for spaming (but I can't contact with Maerryji in any other way). Those titles you refer too are made according to the number of posts yes, but the VIP status has nothing to do with it.
If you contribute (could be technical solutions, games reviews,...) you can become a VIP (it's got nothing to do with the number of posts) - and if nothing else, it's easier to comunicate.
The comunity is welcoming and those titles have no connection with the atitude (and the counts are from whenever you joind forth - so you wouldn't need a huge number of daily posts).

Sorry for the offtopic caused by my posts.
Back to the topic: Great maul "Armageddon", axe "Splitter", and long sword "Life taker" (maybe some more items, too) are indeed mentioned at www.ethereallore.com.
But do you know any way (in-game or cheating-based) to find them?
By the way there are many clear mistakes in those manuals. For example Shard of Truth and Ruby of Truth are claimed to add 5 defense points which doesn't seem to be right.

Hmm, I'm not really an expert in hex-editing. I wouldn't know how to find these items, either...
But how did you create that list of unknown items (with the Talba Ring, Vortex Scroll etc.)? Wouldn't that help us out?
I've tried the Vortex spell with a trainer, and I've noticed the extreme low MP usage for this spell; level 1 needs 3 MP and level 4 needs 24 MP; I guess this spell was either meant to be the basic spell, or was to be found even before the Freeze spell. Or maybe the Freeze spell replaces the Vortex spell; that does make sense to me: First Vortex was made up, but then they needed the use of Freeze in the Swamps, so they ditched Vortex.
Hey, I was wondering what your opinion is about these subjects:
- Best main character
Mine is Michael, because he deals HUGE physichal and magical damage and advances so fast in the Fighter and Mage levels. A little bit of alghorithm:
Michael + Spark = Death to all.
- Favorite main character (nostalgy wise :D !)
Ak'shel!
- Best/worst offensive spell
Best: Spark, for it's low MP cost, decent damage even near end-game and it's incredible long range (one square further than Fireball!).
Worst: Lightning; quite high MP cost, so-so damage. What Lightning does, Spark does better, aside from not multitargeting monsters. Freeze would have been worse, but it serves somewhat use in the Draracle's Caves for groups of spiders, as it's your only multitarget spell at the time. I'm also not too fond about Hand of Fate; you need to cast at least level 3 to do any damage (somehow, levels 1 & 2 are the same and 2 uses more MP!) but it has it's use in the White Tower, even though I would advise against using it here (better not rest a lot and move QUICK :max: ).
- Best item to duplicate
I still am not sure about this. My guess would be the Aegis Plate Mail, even though you would have to come back from Castle Cimmeria lv. 3. :tai:
Weapons aren't really that useful, since you can either have two or three weapons (depends on which race you helped in the Dungeons) with weapon factor 60, and two with 56 anyway. I'm not even counting the Crossbows now. Another good choice would be the Jade Neckless or maybe even Crossbow Eternity (BEST long ranged weapon, imho). People who use items could also choose to duplicate the Death Wand.
Share me your opinions! :D

I got Vortex spell by HET once but it does nothing, don't it? Vortex scroll just causes game crash when you try to read it.
It's really hard to explain how to produce items for those who don't have hex-code hacking or programming experience. It's harder than the things I have described before so it would be out of forum format. If you need this for fan-game project I can try to describe this (think it would be easier for me than for Reanimator) and send you by e-mail.
The best main character is Baccata and that makes Ak'shel best support one. I dislike dumbs so prefer Conrad rather than Michael (85 or 90 damage by Spark:IV isn't a big difference). I know you can get mage level or two for Michael before Draracle's caves but the first one is so boring... so it's easier to do it in Upper Opinwood, using fireball wand (one wand easily makes him level 3 mage). Conrad can have 3rd with a half before he leaves Manor.
Spark is a good spell to fight unless your enemy has other vulnerabilities.
Mist of Doom is nice, especially for Ak'shel with his 180MP at 5th level.
Fireball and Freeze are good only against vulnerable enemies.
Lightning and Hand of Fate are almost useless, but the worst one is Caustic Fog!
But: Before you can use Mist of Doom at Tower level 3, the best spell to level up is surely Fireball:II-IV against hornets. And Freeze lets you gain 6-12k silver to buy fireball wands.
Item to duplicate? Hm... Westwood stick? Zephyr ring if we would find a way to get it? Great axe "Master" if you wish westwood stick but are too lazy to gain 5th rogue level?

Some information to avoid senceless postings:
Amount of experience needed for levels 2-10 is:
500, 1500, 5000, 25000, 50000, 80000, 120000, 180000, and 270000.

03-11-2005, 08:32 AM
Hehe. That's not fair! "The best main character is Baccata". With a main characters, I mean the guys which you can choose at the start of the game! :D
Ak'shel is really good at the 'hard' places in the Lands; he's the best healer, since the healing amount is not dependend on anything and he has the most MP.
Conrad does get the first mage level faster, but Michael get's the second one faster. In the end, it only matters 4 MP, so therefore I do not consider Conrad a better mage than Michael.
About the experience points: are the values cumulative? I mean, do you need to gain 500 experience points for level 2 and another 1000 for level 3? Or do you need 1500?
I believe throwing stuff nets you about 1 exp.; you mentioned that an item in the start of the game is non-throwable, right? Well, if you keep picking it up and throw it really fast, you can get to Rogue level 3 (or even 4 if you got to much time) in 15 minutes time! Useful if you are having problems and want some easy extra HP.
I know Vortex doesn't do anything, but I was considering why it has ever existed! :D
I don't really like spells with high MP cost, since you need to rest so long and monsters get generated while you rest.
Did you know you can reset the monster spawning time by saving and reloading? A cheap way to get past difficult area's! :max:
Maerryji
03-11-2005, 08:52 AM
I meant that Baccata becomes the best character since you get him. He's much better fighter than Michael. So I prefer Ak'shel as long as he's surely the best at the first game levels and later he supports Baccata with his magic well.
Yes, Michael's magic is 6% more powerful than Conrad's, but he is dumb! He-he.
Experience: You need 500, then 1000, then 3500 etc. Throwing an item or shooting gives you 2 rogue experience points, I use that oftenly (yes, nonthrowable items are preferable). By the way, if you are doing it at Northland forest you can also practice magic when new boars appear.
About respawning monsters - yes, it looks like this, but I would not use it anyway. I prefer to level up a bit more than it's needed and always be prepared.
Undertaker
03-11-2005, 10:56 AM
It appears as though the boars need twice the spawn time as other monsters. Too bad, because you can really use some early level-ups.
The spawn time continues while you're reading a note, so you can read the Writ of Passage and so something else for five minutes. Then you can beat up the boar and read again. Of course, this aplies for other area's as well.

No, it's not. First of all, if we post tricks here it doesn't mean we're actually do it, or at least not often. Secondly, the game is HARD, even for us die-hard fans. Especially with the new nightmare mode, anything is welcome. lastly, of course saving and reloading to reset spawn time would be cheating, but we're gathering knowlegde for the fan project as well.
And I play plenty of other games, don't worry about that. I don't play this game that often anymore, since, indeed, most of it is known already. But with all this new information I hear, I just got to check it out! :D

I don't know who is the best but my favourite char is Kieran. He fights as fast as monsters. His blows are weak but frequent and accurate. :Titan:
My favourite spell is Mist of Doom but I think the most usable is Spark. I cast it even in Cimmeria.
I usually duplicate Rapier ''Coup D' Grace''. I also triplicate and tetraplicate it.:bleh:
Oh, I forgot. Every time you make lucky blow it deals 1000 damage if your opponent has no more than 25% HP.

To Gamefreak: Do you prefer walking through the game over and over again with no changes? I see no sence in such a time-wasting so I try to find something new, solve the puzzles etc. When there left no secrets I could solve in-game I began using HET (save-files aren't packed so it's easy to work with them) and it helped a lot.
It also turned out that all the "construction waste" was not completely removed from the game and you can access it with HET. Now what I do is like treasure-hunting. For me it's much more interesting than playing itself, maybe because I'm not fond of being only a consumer.

Here is the summed up data on killing Scotia. (Some were provided by Undertaker and Mateej, some were discovered by me).
The common way to kill Scotia is to combine the Ruby of Truth and the Shard of Truth and apply it while she is shapeshifting. Then you have to deal with her true form only. If you just kill her two primary battleforms she turns into nightmare creature which is immune to almost everything. Most of the players would tell you that now you're dead, but it is not correct.
First, note that there are three ways to deliver a damage to whoever you fight with.
You may do it
a) using the westwood stick;
b) throwing a weapon or armor (not the rocks) into your enemy; or
c) using sabre "Cutter", sabre "Gutter", axe "Slitter", or axe "Splitter" by Baccata.
It doesn't seem that you can defeat Scotia's last form these ways (she has more than million hit points for sure), but you may kill her while she is shapeshifting. That doesn't cause a victory yet, but there's a way to use this, too...
So let's suppose you already have the Whole Truth and westwood stick. You also may need the Dark Gauntlet or Hand of Fate spell and enough amount of mana and health (level up a bit if you aren't sure). Make sure you have not killed all the "toads" at the upper floor of Cimmeria (two of them hide within the walls and won't attack you if you didn't touch the buttons, so you can easily spare them).
Pushing Scotia across her domain with Hand of Fate/Dark Gauntlet you can break one of the walls. So you can always get out if she is alive, no matter what appearence she has. Do so and find any of the toads. You may see that it's not a toad anymore, but the main point is that it glows with blue like Scotia when she begins to shapeshift. (The only in-game reason for this I can see is that Scotia uses Mask to move to her guardian's body).
So you can apply the Whole Truth now. This creature becomes Scotia, and so does true Scotia behind you. You need to kill any of them to win.
If you killed true Scotia while she was shapeshifting you also can find the fake one and destroy it (don't forget to use the Whole Truth before or it will just die).

Reminder: the nightmare difficulty level was discovered.
To set it make sure that you have the default game settings:
Music:on Sound:on Monsters are:normal Smooth scrolling:on Floating cursor:off
and save the game. Now open it with hex-editor, find the symbol 1B at position 00000253 (disk version) or 0000025E (CD version), and replace it with 3B. Load the game and check the game controls. If you see the
Monsters are:Main menu
setting you're in the nightmare now. To get back just click the button.
This is more brief and accurate version of the algorithm than the previous one.
Undertaker
04-11-2005, 12:59 PM
What I do is the following:
Set the game to Normal and save. Immediately (and I mean immediately) go back in the Main Menu, change to Ferocious and save on a new slot. Now open a hexeditor and compare the scores. This way you can find the values as well! :D
Gamefreak
04-11-2005, 04:59 PM
The problem with that is - to search for a change in values in the savegame, you have to search through the entire savegame, and then the second savegame as well, which is a heck of a work. You can compare the two savegames with a Dos command though:
fc /b filename1 filename2
Be sure to be in a Dos prompt (Start - Run - cmd.exe), otherwise the window will close once the command is executed and you can't see the results of the comparison.
Undertaker
04-11-2005, 05:22 PM
No, you don't have to, because the needed values are always close to the one's Maerryji has said! :D
Gamefreak
04-11-2005, 05:37 PM
Yes, but if you don't know the values from somewhere, you have otherwise to toil to search the entire files up ;)

The early version(s) of Lands had a bug: Heal:III and Heal:IV spells did not cure characters who lacked too much health. Healing dead characters who had too many HP by bezel cups caused even worse bug: your character's health was restored, but character became zombie-like: unconscious, unable to use wands etc., and invulnerable to all damages (as far as I remember, I won't even die at sinkholes if I had such zombie). This character could only be used as shield against monsters. I didn't find any way to resurrect them, except for loading the game.
Later the bug with bezel cups was fixed, but Heal:III and Heal:IV spells still do not bring the character to perfect condition if his or her wounds are too deep.
If the character needs 128 or more HP at once, these spells restore only 16HP.
Undertaker
09-11-2005, 03:56 PM
Yes, I've discussed this bug at the Rapidforum before. I estimated the lack of HP around 150. 128 is of course a more logical number.
I've never experienced the Bezel Cup bug, and it doesn't sound like something I'd like to experience! :sneaky:

Here are the additional data on delays. Three kinds of delays are denoted by x (delay after shot or missed blow), y (delay after the lucky blow), and z (delay after spell). The value x depends on character and his or her rogue level. Denote the x-delay at rogue levels 1-3 by x1, x-delay at levels 4-7 by x4 and x-delay at levels 8-10 by x8.
Previous data (disk version): For all characters except Kieran x1=10, x4=9, x8=7; for Kieran x1=x4=7, x8=6. For all characters y=4 and z=8.
This was checked only at ferocious difficulty level.
New data (CD version): At ferocious level everything remains the same, but at normal level some of the delays are greater: For all characters except Kieran x1=12, x4=10, x8=8, for Kieran x1=8, x4=7, x8=6. Values of y and z remain constant.
Delays at wimpy difficulty level look the same as at normal.
It is possible that CD and disk version have the equal delays, but I have not checked it yet. And I'm going to obtain nightmare level delays as well.
I do not know why the x-delays are shorter at harder difficulty level. Probably the monsters' delays wane much faster than characters' if you set the harder level, so the reason was to make the difference between the rogue levels smaller. In other words, at the most difficult level you can hardly feel the effect of getting 4th rogue level, and at easy or normal difficulty 4th rogue level helps your characters much.
By the way, I have improved my last result and walked through the game in 2 hours 4 minutes (level: ferocious, self-restriction: not using Vaelan's cube against the monsters).
Undertaker
11-11-2005, 09:22 AM
Ah, so your recovery time depends on the difficulty level! I thought the disk verion had much shorter recovery times, because when I reached Rogue level 7, my characters recovered about as fast as Kieran would. This didn't work in the Cd version. It turns out that the difficulty was responsible. Great job, Maerryji! :ok:
2 hours 4 minutes? One word: respect! :max:
Maerryji
11-11-2005, 11:23 AM
By the way, just noticed: xiK=(xi+y)/2. I mean that Kieran's x-delay is in the middle between other characters' x-delay at the same level and their y-delay. Rounded up...

Nothing's going on here, the game is ESA-protected. And we're no longer allowed to host it because we lost the permission to do so. Sorry.:)
Yeah you can thank EA for doing that. Does anyone out there know how to get the game and sound to work on an xp machine. Perferably with software that won't totally screw up your system.

Undertaker
30-01-2006, 07:57 AM
There are two ways to duplicate items:
1. There's a device in the Catwalk Caverns (near the end of the game) that let's you duplicate one item. In order to activate it, you have to push three Necrosaps (those flying sparks) between the shocking things (you'll recognise them when you see them).
2. There's another way to duplicate items, but it works by (ab)using a glitch. I'm quoting myself from http://www.ethereallore.com/1cheats.html.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Cheat! I've found quite an interesting bug - it lets your might and protection grow to infinite!
Note: I have CD version 1.02. I think this worked on and older floppy versions as well.
Here's the trick:
1. Go to White Tower Lv.3 (or Castle Cimmeria Lv.1 but that is too far away and too late in the game to really make use of this cheat) and go to the only pit in the level (the pit which drops you off at the minotaur on Level 2). Save your game.
2. Make sure the pit is open. Wait for a ghost to appear over the pit.
3. Now, place a weapon or armor (preferably Great Sword 'Justice' or the Kite Shield) on the pit, so that the weapon or armor falls through. The ghost will have disappeared.
4. Click on the pit and you'll get your weapon/armor back (keep trying, it might be hard to find the right spot). Place it into your inventory. Keep clicking on the pit and you will get more copies! Get a number of five of the same weapon, or four of the same armor.
5. Go to Victor's Arms or the weapon seller in the swamp.
6. Equip your party with all copies and sell the remaining one.
7. Go outside and check your characters. Where the equipment was are now items named 'illegal item'. Take them all off and place them in your inventory (NEVER place two or more copied items or illegal items on the floor--the game will crash). While doing this, your might/protection will not decrease and will remain the same as when you were equipped.
8. Get back in the shop and re-buy the same weapon/armor. Your 'illegal items' will re-change to the copied equipment.
9. Repeat steps #5-#7 for infinite might/protection.
Notes about the steps above:
-I decided to actually check what I mailed you earlier and to my shock I discovered that an important piece of the infinite might/protection trick did not work; when you re-buy a copied item, the "illegal items" do not change back to the copied item. I guess that part only worked on older floppy versions.
-You can still get the trick going in the CD version; equip yourself with all copied items and sell the remaining one as usual. Buy the equipment back (or choose another item to copy). Now, go back to copy your equipment and repeat. To get rid of "illegal items," donate them to the "Stone Idol: Ra’ToI the Fortunate" in the swamps (refer to the map). It just costs a lot more time, but you also get infinite money this way.
- Watch out for enemies that grab your weapons and drop them on the floor--remember, if two or more copied items or illegal items are on the floor, the game crashes.
- This trick is best done with Great Sword 'Justice' or the Kite Shield, because you can re-buy them in the shops.
- If a character now wears no weapons or shields, it can damage enemies with his bare hands!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
As for the Emerald Blade, I don't know which one you've missed, but there's one in a treasure chest in Upper Opinwood and the other one is in the Urbish Mines level 1 (part 2), somewhere on the floor. Good luck!

I'm currently in the progress of playing through the game (disk version) with Kieran and making savegames at certain points. These savegames are made for people like you who'd like to start over at a certain point. With Kieran, I'm now at the point of having to chose to fight the Knowles or the Xeobs.
I intend to do this for all characters, but it will take a while before I have them complete, of course! :ok:

I beat this game so many times back in middle school. But you know what, the feline character is actually the best in the end-game. He really sucks until then though, but later he dodges everything. Also the dragon guy is good. But you know what I like about this game, I really like the graphics. Seriously, back then the graphics were so fantastic.
sure, this game was linear and the gameplay wasn't as in-depth as eye of the beholder, but this game had such an amazing presentation. the voice-acting, cinematics, graphics, whoo boy this was one sexy game.

I guess that's why in Lands of Lore 2 - Guardians of Destiny only he is portraited as the one who killed Scotia :D

Actually, my favorite character is Michael, for his fighting capabilities, but also for his overpowered magic damage. Conrad is nearly the same; just less damage (physical and magical), but with more protection.
Sure, Kieran can dodge, but he inflicts so little damage that Baccata ends up killing all the monsters. Furthermore, his magic is the worst of any character in the game. It's not that he's bad, but just not as good as Conrad and Michael.
Nostalgy wise, Ak'shel is my favorite character. While overall he's not as good as the other champions (at least in my opinion), he's the best character for 'chokepoint' area's, such as the third White Tower level. This is because his magic capacity makes him an excellent healer.
Thanks Undertaker for the offer but I already had started over. And as for the graphics of the game if I remember hearing correctly they were hand drawn, but still you're right for a 80386 Machine, graphics like that were pretty incredible.
Another note, I think on the game box or something there is a spell that is shown that to my knowledge isn't in the game, and I think it's called Vortex, anyone know what the deal with that is.

I've posted this at http://37852.rapidforum.com and wanted to share this on this forum as well:
"I was fooling around in Draracle's Caves lv. 2 to get level ups and I noticed the amount of Cave dwellers in the west part of the level (near reference 6 on http://ethereallore.com/1map.html ) was extraordinary. It just didn't make sense to me; no matter how fast I killed them, they just kept on coming. But when I was on the other side of the level, they ceased to appear so quickly.
I researched it some more and then I found out that stepping on the spinner (reference 6) creates two Cave dwellers in the room west of the spinner (the same thing happens in Castle Cimmeria lv. 1, when you try to open the jammed door, which spawns two Ethereal warriors). So my hit & run tactics were actually the cause of the spawning of about fifteen cavedwellers every minute!
So here's a little advise to everyone that doesn't want to get beaten up by those stinking cavemen: stay away from that spinner as much as you can! :max:
The same goes for the spinner at reference 12; this one makes two Ratmans a little to the east."
Because of this, you can do some major levelling here, especially because you can have the Jewelled Dagger in your possession at this point.

I'm stuck right now in the Level 3 of the castle and the game seems to be broken. When I finish the sum puzzle I go to the room with the humanoid figurine and Dawn's key. @Guest_peter: I think you've made a mistake; I can't find any monsters in the manual that I don't know of.
You can have another Vaelan's Cube when you've received the reward from either the leader of the Knowles or the Xeobs. It's on the floor in the room where you meet with the leader. If you've attacked the leader, the Cube will still be there. You can use the cube to destroy the ghosts in Castle Cimmeria (or in the White Tower, if you, for some reason, want to go back to that place).

@Olmec-Joe: do you remember that you found a blue version (the Sapphire Eye) of the green pearl in the Draracle's Caves? You opened up wall with it by placing it in a dragon's eye socket. The green one (the Emerald Eye) could have been used to open another path. This leads to another part of the Caves, so that you find another offering for the Draracle. Don't worry, you haven't missed anything; if you take the Emerald Eye path, the secret wall in the Sapphire Eye path will close, and if you take the Sapphire path, the secret wall will close after you've stepped through it. This way you can take only one path.
It's always a pleasure to help fellow Lands of Lore fans! :ok:
@Hamburgerboyt: just tell me your main character and your e-mail adress and I'll send it to you (it's only a couple of kb's big).

Hey undertaker, I searched wikipedia, under westwood and found their FTP, which still are active. Lot of stuff there, plus one thing that intrigued me. Lands of Lore 1 demo. Maybe i can get a new take on the game trough the demo, beacuse those tend to be different:
ftp://ftp.westwood.com/
Quite cool actually, with pictures, trailers, patches and much more.
check it out :ok:

Yes, I know that one ;D ! But I didn't get the demo running.
There are some nice midi's, including some that didn't make it into the final release as well. It's a really great link that everyone should check out! :ok:
PS. Did you know about the 'empty treasurechest' secret in White Tower lv. 1? The empty chest in this area actually has stuff in it, but only if you pick the lock succesfully on the first attempt. :sneaky:

Undertaker: the admins removes email-adresses, because they want to protect them. If you write them here, then idiots from the internet can take them, and send to people that will overspam that email, or something...... or atleast that was what i was told.
Either way, if you are both registered members, then you can exchange email-adresses by privat message on this site, or something, plainly i dont know anything about it.
secondly, i dont know this story to the fullest, but shoulden Lands of Lore not at first have been Eye Of the Beholder 3??? because westwoo did make Eye Of the Beholder 2, and was about to make the third one, when the people that had the rights backed out, and made someone else make the third one?? Maybe that is why there is elves and traises of dwarves (dwarven boots, etc) in the lands. But all in all it was a gain for us that westwood lost the rigts... if this story is true!! Is it??

Hope someone can help me solve this one.
I'm unable to enter the pod room in the Draracle caves, it seem to te blocked.
There should be a hidden switch on the north wall but it ain't there.
Found something on the net about a bug if you encountered Draracle before entering the pod room this room is blocked bij a wall. Hope if someone knows a workaround.
Thanks already.
Undertaker

Yes, I know. It's not a bug, though. You can only enter that room before you see the Draracle. This is because you'll find another team member in that room, that will leave you when you reach the Draracle. If that party member would be still with you when you make progress in the game, the game will crash when another party member will join you (because you cannot have four party members) and therefore, you cannot finish the game.

i walked around much but i cant get into the 2nd level exept the small part with the pit in it.
i ve read the walkthrough, but it says sth of a teleporter on level 1, but their is none so.... :sos:

Remember the pit in the first level? There are two wheels and a button nearby. You need to turn one of the wheels (don't remember which one) and then press the button. A teleporter will appear. You'll know wheather you've turned the right wheel if you start spinning like mad before being teleported.
Good luck! :max:

The walkthrough is right... I think you need at least Rogue level 5 to be able to pick the lock. In case you don't know, you can increase your Rogue level by throwing items and shooting bows/crossbows/arbalests. Of course, actually killing monsters will hugely increase the experience you receive. You can further increase your Rogue level by 2 by equiping Great Axe 'Master' and a Jade neckless, so you only need to reach Rogue level 3, assuming you've found these items.

Ehm, that beats me.
You could try it at the main page, where the instruction manual is for download. Perhaps patching the game could also help you (I think later versions of the game don't have this copy protection at all, at least mine doesn't), but then you would have to start over your game. If that doesn't help, you could post some of the questions she asks and I'll try to look it up in my manuals.

I dont know where all my old stuff went so was just doing this for a little bit of fun, have been amazed how many things i had forgoten in the game, Still at least the white tower was easier than the first time i did this game where i used the Cube thing straight away to break the second gate and fought my way through the uper level against the wraiths by hand, dang that took loooong.

There are indeed two sequels. Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny and Lands of Lore III. Both are great games, but while playing the third part, you'll notice the game has been rushed because of the interference of EA... There's lots of bugs and the game is short. Both games don't compare to the first part, IMHO. But they're still great games.
And yes, the first Lands of Lore was ESA protected, but not anymore! :max:

I just want to share this wondeful game with all you people.
To preserve somethin as Lands of Lore is very important to me...... it is like art to me.- Art that needs to be preserved. Preserved by so many people as possible get a hold of it.
Though i would had prefered to have bought it on CD once again, because the original CD i have is broken. And Westwood does not exist anymore, so it dosent get repuplished............ so we all have to share it this way.
Companies like that have to make their produkts available........ or else the pirates would have a field day.

I am playing the 3rd one now. Did you like Lands Of Lore 3???
Though the 1st one is the best.
Lands of Lore 1 is my favorite game ever. A shame that EA cancelled the 4th one in production when they bought Westwood studios.
But i am glad that most of the orignal Westwood-geniouses have made their new independent company: Hypoglyph...... i think.
Lets hope they will make new games in the genre like Lands of Lore,

I played both Lands of Lore and Lands of Lore II - Guadians of Destiny. I think both are great games, have amazing music (especially Lands of Lore 2) and epic story, and I love both of them equally.
About Lands of Lore 3, I bought it in the original package too not long ago, and am playing it from to time a small piece. I don't seem to like it as much as the previous two games, eventhough it introduced the interesting system of guilds, magical companion who's always accompanying you and interesting spells (many taken from Lands of Lore II, not only those that were useable by the main character there).
But the story lacks greatness in Lands of Lore 3. I mean, come on, how could one be hero with this thin boyish voice and shy kind of speaking? Luther was much more fitting for a hero in my eyes, more impressive voice and look. I don't know, Lands of Lore 3 is just not Lands of Lore II or Lands of Lore - Throne of Chaos. The music is also not that convincing, and music is 50-60% of the games. So I don't like part 3 as much as the previous two games, I think this is a weak part from the three.
Undertaker
29-07-2006, 08:24 AM
Many people agree with you, Scatty. And you haven't even mentioned (that's no offence in any way) the numberous bugs that remain in the game, even a bug that prevents you from making it to the third rank in the Magician's Guild. And there is the 'Heal fills up hunger bar'-bug, which makes the hunger system redundant.
Personally, I think the third part has better music than the second (Gladstone Keep, the Warrior's Guild, the Draracle's Caves, the Dragon City and the Underworld Hotel theme are all excellent songs. What I do find annoying about both the second and third part, is that the music gets interupted when you get in a fight.
I think the Guild system is nice, but the Journal system sucks, because there's nothing to find out for yourself left. Also, there's too powerful equipment available from too early on. Come on, how can you give Thohan's Great Sword right after completing the first portal world? The Fire Shield (not sure if that is it's correct name) can be found right from the start. Getting powerful armor is also easy, especially when Belial's equipment becomes for sale, right when you get Thohan's blade. This makes the game too easy and uninteresting, since there's almost no better equipment to find.
EDIT: I've forgotten to mention the unbalanced battle system: melee attacks are way better than ranged and magical attacks.
All in all, I think the third part is very fun. It just doesn't compare to it's two preceders. But I can't help the feeling that this game is rushed.
PS. Have you guys been able to get Noble Valkyrie Crossbow on a legal way? I haven't, but I got it through a bug. In the warrior's Guild, go to Chesara's room while it's still closed. Now, click as fast (and I mean FAST) on the door as you can, while walking in the door. This way, you open up the door bit by bit, while preventing it from closing. Be sure not to enter the room and let the door close, or you'll be stuck forever. When you talk to Chesara, she'll thank you for all you've done (that would be nothing :P ) and give you the crossbow.

I like many things in lands of lore 3: It is mostly the small things. That the journal really is useful to know something about items.
In lands of lore 1 we all hated Lord Geron; in this game he is erally revealed as being a traioter.... of sorts: have you ever gone into his office, while Geron was not there?? You should, then try and duck and use the button under his desk, and then pull the chair back..... a secret room is revealed: cool. and if you push the skulls, you will come further down. I thought that Lands 1 and 2 was more of a liniar stories: while it was a little more free in this game: you could really steal and kill many things.... also that there was so many treasure chest in lower gladstone: you just had to jump around.
Also it was cool that the draracle gaves from lands 1, was recreated in LOL 3, also the inner castle.
Yes also as mentioned there was some bugs in the game, the one with that it was imposible to get to the 3rd level in the magician guild: i found out that you should not free the amazon or the other prison, when you are at first in the tuloi home world.
Something i really like in lands 3, is that i always discover new things everytime i play it; that you can climb a pipe on the warrior guild, smash a window, and get the fire-shield. That you can get a piggy-bank in the shattered desert with 100.000 crowns.... i think it is the first whine you can climp... up in a pedistall.... also that the shatered desert is in fact from another Westwood game: Command and Conquer. and that it is a Nod-base you are entering: also in that base i found the COOLEST misslile-weapon: when i pushed a button for a weapon,,,, the mechanism keept on going with empty holsters, until it revelaed the most awesome missile-weapon: The Boom-stick (Ash in "Army of Darkness" ...... anyone), which is a Shotgun.
I just love the details of Lands 3.
My top 3 of lands of lore is:
Lands of Lore 1
Lands of Lore 3
Lands Of lore 2

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Yalla-Johnny @ Aug 14 2006, 01:26 PM) 248557</div>Is it easy to install and play...[/b]
Assuming the archive is still the same with the one I downloaded and played last year, just use WinRAR to extract the files inside. Then open the first one, LOLCD.001 or something like that, with WinRAR once again, and do extract.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Yalla-Johnny @ Aug 14 2006, 01:26 PM) 248557</div>How do you make it play??[/b]
Use DOSBox.
[/b][/quote]
Thanks man :ok:
Then ill try it then.
This is a very cool game. Especially this CD-Version.
And then there is the game: have you also had the problem that in the final chapter, Scotias tower, that some of the animals constantly acided your armor???
When i played it first time, the monsters (especially that wheel-looking-clown with the big eye) acided and destroyed my best pieces of armor (and i forgot to save, because i am so dumb), so that in the final battle that red-haired man (Paulson i think) did not where any armor..... so the battlle was very hard.
But had any of you other also tried that really iritating problem????
(PS: Sorry for my poor typing-skills)

The answer is pretty much always the same. 'It works in DOSBox'. I also recommend you get a free front end for DOSBox called D-Fend. It set's up the mounting and soundcard, etc globally, which mean you only have to set it up once, you can set the cycles and skips, etc in D-Fend because you can set a profile for each game. Once the profile is set you double click on it and D_Fend calls DOSBox, gives it the paramenters and settings you have made in the D-Fend profile and starts the game. No setting the mounting over and over again and resetting the cycles. In D-Fend, just do it the once!
I have about 50 old DOS games listed in my D-Fend profile list. I couldn't even tell you what cycles, etc I have each game set up for. All I do is double click on the game, just like a shortcut and DOSBox opens, the game loads, the screen goes full screen and I have the game running at the cycles and setting I want without having to touch anything (other than the first time)!!! :)

Well that's interesting. I never use D-Fend, I just use the traditional DOSBox. Do you mean that in D-Fend, the program will be intelligent enough to raise or reduce cycles according to the game being played? I mean, if I want to play games like Lands of Lore and Anvil of Dawn, I will set the cycles to 8000. But when I played Ancient Land of Ys, the cycles needed to be reduced as low as 250, 'cause otherwise the game will be much too fast. With Albion, however, no amount of raising/reducing cycles really worked for me, it is unbearably slow. So, can D-Fend adjust that automatically?

Not really. Just put your chest armor in your inventory and you should be fine. If you do lose your armor, let Baccata be the one without armor; he's in the middle of the guys, so he gets hit the least often. Generally, only monsters that take up an entire square (that would include Scotia) attack Baccata. Or just find some new armor. There are some to be found in the Dungeons and Castle Cimmeria.

I tried first at downloading this game, from the link that was put here.... the one that lead to the underdogs. At first they refused to let me download this game in 110 mb version.... then i clicked back on this site, found a direkt link from this site to the underdogs, found lands of lore once again..... and then i could download it esaily..... just that i would let you all know.
Now back to the game: i stepped into the swamp, and i have now gotten some bronze-horse-shue..... i cant use it on my charaters and cant equip it. I can only get 5 or 10 crowns for it.,....,.,.,
Do any of you know a better use of it???
Can i give it to the guy who drives Dawn in the wagon???
Or is there another hidden purpose of the bronze-horse-shue that i do not know about??
That is the same thing when you i think it is in the white tower, you find a granit-rock.... does that have any other use, than being sold for 5 crowns????
Secondly (i must warn you, this is the most irrelevant thing in this thread, i think): have you noticed that there are 3 different kind of rocks in this game?? Yes, there is rock, granite, and then there is a smothe-rock.... (4 kind of rocks, if you count coal)...... just to let you know..
:titan:

No, the coal doesn't count. Other rocks can be throwed when picked up to hurt enemies slightly, and also can be equipped as weapons in hands I think, but the damage is very low. The different kinds of rocks do different damage, other than that there shouldn't be anything more behind them.

[/b]
No. Cycles cannot be automatically changed by D-Fend.It wouldn't know what speed you would be happy with! :) You still have to use Ctl-F12 to raise cycles etc. This is what I mean by setting te game up first time. Once you have started the game the first time and raised/lowered the cycles to what your happy with you would put that information into the game profile in D-Fend. D-Fend can auto cycle up and down by 500 (there's an option to tick in the profile) The main point is that once this information is put into D-Fend, that's it. In your Ancient Land of Y's you have to adjust the cycles everytime you play the game. You also have to mount the drive, and if it needs the CD you have to mount the CD as well. In D-Fend, you do all this just once. And once you put the cycles required into the profile, that's it.
All I can say is get D-Fend, read the readme.txt, or just try it. I am currently playing about 5 Abandonia games. I would hate to go back to opening DosBox, mounting the drives, going to the correct folder and starting the exe, then increasing/decreasing cycles, etc. In fact D-Fend is why I am happy playing 5 games at once. For me it's just a double click on the profile title in D-Fend to start the game. Hardly any more than any modern game shortcut on your desktop! :) And I haven't even mentioned the fact you have room for comments on the game, you can classify it in a genre, then list by genre, you have many settings you can play around with to get a stubbvorn game working, but it only involves ticking boxes, not entering all those esoteric commands in DosBox! :) There's many more options too that even I only skim the surface of. It really is an excellent DosBox front end. I personally think the two products should merge. I will close by saying that once you have used D-Fend for a little while you will never see how you managed with just DosBox! :)
I think you can tell I am a fan of D-Fend! :) And it's free! :)

About Mist of Doom: you'll find it in the Catwalk Caverns. As long as you explore everything, I'm sure you'll come across it. (It's kind of funny that, even though I knew the Hand of Fate spell existed, it took me years to find out where it was, and that you discover it even before Mist of Doom...)
About the horseshoes: in all my years of playing this game, I've never found any use for these items. My guess is that they are references to the game "Kyrandia 2: Hand of Fate". There are more references to that game, like the Pseudobushia Hugiflora in the Northland Forest and the Westwood Stick (there was a stick that comes back to you many times in HoF).
About the rocks: the smooth and granite rock do a little more damage when you throw them, but nothing special.
But then again, every time I thought I knew just about everything about this game, it manages to make another surprise. Who knows...

Thanks for the info. I usually do not play more than one game at a time, and after I finish a game I usually just burn the game along with saved game files into CDs then remove the folder from harddisk, so I may not get much use of D-Fend profile, but thanks anyway for the info :ok:

If I remember right I think that you have to give the horse shoe to some guy ih a wagon, and he'll give you something for it.. but again I'm not entirely sure which or where he is.. but for some reason I think that is what it is for
yeah I think so.. about the whole hoseshoe thing but like you I can't remember exactly where it is you have to give it away

As far as I remember, there's only one wagon with a guy in the whole game. It's the one where Dawn will be hiding after Scotia poisoned king Richard in Gladstone, the wagon is in one of the woods. Don't ask me for more details, it's years by now since I played the game last time.

But surely even if you burn it to a CD, if you have to play the game in DosBox, you still have to set it up in dosbox everytime you play? If you are not using dosbox, yes, I understand you don't have to use d-fend, it only works with dosbox, after all! :)

That's what [autoexec] section of DosBox.conf is for, dude...
rabadi (too lazy to login)
02-09-2006, 01:26 AM
Yup, exactly what the_fifth_horseman said. I have this folder named "games" in harddisk ("C:\games"). When I play a game, I just extract the downloaded .zip content into this folder. When I finish, I just delete the files (leaving the folder "games" empty but intact). In DosBox.conf, when I installed DOSBox long time ago, I already add some lines:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c c:\games
c:
So, for example I am currently playing Eye of the Beholder 2. I extracted EOB2 files into this C:\games folder. When I run DOSBox, I only need to start the game by typing "start". No need to type mount command anymore since it is already in autoexec section in DosBox.conf a long time ago.

KiLL4H: well that depends: have you used Dos-Box before??
I you have then it would be easy.
But otherwise just download the game. I downloaded mine through this site, i used the links on this site to find the website "the underdogs". There i found the big CD-versiion with all the voice and dialogue in.
I downloaded the Zipfile.
Unpaked the sip-file.
Then i found the file LOLCD.001 - opened it with win-rar or similar program in some folder.
It is now unpacked, to run it, you have to use Dos-box on the lands-bat ----- the bat-file
Im not the best one to tell you about Dosbox, but ill try anyway (clever people can fill in my blank spots):
Install dosbox (you will find a place to find the program somewhere on this site).
When it is installed you click on the dosbox icon in your desktop or start-menu.
When you start Dos-box you would have to find a folder on your maindrive to act as your c:
on my computer i use g: and a folder called "gamlespil".
When dos-box is started i type
mount c g:/gamlespil
Then that folder is a virtual DOS c:
now type:
c:
And you are now on your virtual DOS c:
now type whatever you called your lands of lore folder
example:
lolcd
then
lands
And you should be in the game.
But you might have togo into setup first, to make the sound better. i use Soundblaster...... just try your way forward.
Sorry for my english, but i hope it will be of help to you :ok:

Hmm, interesting. How did it happen that the arrows appeared?
As for the replicator, there should have been a scroll in the alcove, not sure though if it explained how it works. So this is how it does - you need to get those electrical spark-beings flying around and attacking you between the spark points in the two (or was it three?) side corridors. This is accomplished by the low level of Hand of Fate spell or more easily by this glove of the commander that pushes enemies back by Hand of Fate. How you get these beings near you? Well, rest a little and they should come to you while you do, they spawn on random places after some time. Rest at the dead end of one of this spark-point corridors, then when the spark being attacks you, push it back outside of the corridor, follow it, turn over and push it back into the corridor. Once it's between the spark points you activated them. You'll see it when it's done. Repeat the same at the two other corridors.
After you've done it, go to the replicator, put an item inside and you'll get two. Not all items can be replicated though, but you can replicate armor, weapons, commanders glove, potions and herbs for sure. Can't replicate the magic cube and similar quest stuff. I think the replication works only one time, so think twice on what to replicate. I didn't find much use to the replicator at that point of the game, all my characters had already good armor and weapons, but I usually replicated this best two-handed sword in the game anyway, or sometimes that hammer you get off the minotaur at White Tower.

Lands of Lore is great, I actually bought the cd version on ebay to play it with the voices etc. However I can't migrate my save games from the version I downloaded of this site to the cd version :S. (Gives an error that the version is incorrect!)
Is it possible to somehow use the save games from this version with the cd version, or insert the voices etc from the cd into the version you can download from this site?
I'm too far start over again, but want to continue playing with the voices!

I'm afraid that's not possible, but perhaps I can send you a replacement savegame. If you'd like that, PM me with your e-mail and details about your savegame (where you were in the game and which champion you've chosen at the start of the game). I just hope the moderators don't mind me asking your e-mail...

Well, I'm a member of a German Lands of Lore forum and we have made savegames with all characters on various points in the game. I myself did Conrad and Kieran and I've done them the best I could, and I have no doubt the others are done very well as well, so I doubt you'd lose much, if not anything. ;)
Off Topic: I'm Dutch as well. I live in Rijnsburg (that's near Leiden), in case you're wondering.
EDIT: damn, I've made a mistake. The savegame we've made are for the disk version. I will see if I have any savegames for the CD version on my hard disk, but it'll be some hours before I'm at home.

I'm sure you would be better off with starting the game anew. Aside from the new speech that you'll otherwise miss out in the beginning, own savegames are always better than one from someone else. Has to do with own effort on the characters and game, a special binding you know, something you won't have if you jump into the game on other's savegame.

Not sure what place you mean. One of the places I can think of you have to do this: Go to the "nest" and click on one of the things there (should be a woman inside that can join you if you want to) and use your map to find a switch.
Or find a crack in the wall or something :P.
