![]() I had the same piece of junk fortune 4 days ago, after installing some drivers for a cheap webcam. Had to re-install whole Windows again, took me 2 more days.
For once I agree with _.r.u.s.s., you use System Restore, you save yourself lots of anger. |

![]() *Sigh*
The problem that caused my Laptop to get Bonkered Was NOT SP3 NOR IE7!! It was ME!!! Nothing else. Also.. The Restore partition is apparently easy to use. Alt+F10 during boot screen (where it says press F2 to go to Bios) Type down password...... Had to remember this after 1.5 years . The Hint I gave myself actually helped... -> standard (standaard) The restoration itself just took a good 5 minutes or so. And I now have to reinstall everything again.. (ONLY downside) First two thing I installed where SP3 AND IE7.. And... No F*ing problem this time.. ! (See it was ME!!) But there are some things that ALSO got restored that I lost somewhere along these1.5 years. (Yes, I actually killed it by small bits a time during these 1.5 years) For one.. I regained access to the setting of Windows Firewall. Cause when I was trying to get a good firewall for my system in the BEGIN use of my system I broke the Windows Firewall.. (Don't ask me how) Second.. One of my Acer Utility programs actually got killed when I tried out Windows Live One Care.. (It killed some of it's important reg settings..) Really.. Doing this Total Restore was probably the Best Thing to do for my system.. And I'm not regretting I did it.

But you can also keep it tolerable later by uninstalling games / programs again which you don't need anymore. Installing them is fast, and without them Windows' load times are faster. If your Windows XP is taking some time by the way to turn off computer or to restart, you can help that if you have just some basic knowledge of the Registry Editor. Start - Run - type in regedit. Open the folder - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control. If it isn't there, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l instead. On the right part of the window double-click on entry WaitToKillServiceTimeOut. It should have 20000 standing as value, change it to 1. After that close all folders, and open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop. Right-click in the right window part on entry AutoEndTask. Enter as value the 1 and close the window with OK. That's all you have to do, and Windows will now turn off really fast. |

![]() Whow there... Don't suggest some new and potentially dangerous settings to me.
Remember what the CAUSE of all this is... (Let's keep it fair and safe for now shall we..?)

![]() Nothing dangerous there, just follow the directions and it's pretty safe
Beside, you can always activate a System Restore point before attempting it, in case of doubt it will restore everything to how it was originally. |

I need IE ITSELF for them. Or else I would navigate to them with an IE-tab in Firefox.

I did, and it never caused me any harm, but speeded up Windows turning off considerably. "people at microsoft knew why", hah. |
