I still remember my elementary school computer lab. We never really learned anything in the class as we mostly just played whatever educational games were installed at the time. Treehouse was always my go-to game. I don't really know why; it simply caught my fancy. The game is a simple edutainment game where you control a young opossum and play through various activities.
The primary focus of the learning is animals and music. The game features a nice interactive list of animals divided into various categories and featuring short descriptions and images of each. In the keyboard activity you play notes and learn short songs. You can also climb into the keyboard and play a simple activity where you identify sounds, instruments, and notes.
Two other activities are also present: In the theatre you construct a variety of simple silly sentences by modifying the who, what, when, and where's. Simple addition can be learned while playing the board game. Depending on where you land you may get rewards, and you must select the larger amounts.
Of note is the fact that there is a multiplayer option. In both the board game and the animal identification game two players can play against each other on the same computer in a turn-based system. If another player is not available, you play against a computer controlled A.I.
One nice thing about the game is that every item in the treehouse can be interactive. You can give food to animals, read facts of the day on the blinds, and more. The game also incorporates breaks; every so often the character will wish to take a nap for a few real minutes. This isn't compulsory, but it's still a nice idea for the kids.
The graphics are very pleasant and cute, and everything looks really nice. The sound, although somewhat sparse in some parts of the game, is likewise pleasant. As a whole, the game has aged rather well in the appearances department.
The main problem with the game is simply that there isn't much to it: everything the game has to offer can be seen and done in fifteen minutes or less. That said, the game is still fun and entertaining, and I imagine it would be great for younger children, or for that matter anyone wishing to relive fond memories of the game.
