Dear Abandonia visitors: Help us keep Abandonia free with a small donation. Abandonia is like an old gaming arcade with only original games. Abandonia helps you have fun four hours and years. If Abandonia is useful to you, please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia.

When Abandonia was founded it was to collect and present all old games where the copyright protection had been abandoned, hence the term ’abandonware’ and the site name Abandonia.com. We are still keeping the site open and free and will appreciate your support to help it stay that way.

This is the VGA-enhanced version of The Last Half of Darkness, and there are two sequels, Last Half of Darkness II and III, all available at Abandonia. In this installment, your goal is to complete a potion which your aunt, a witch, was unable to complete before her death. I've seen worse, although gameplay basically consists of reading the story in the manual and solving some puzzles to reveal the ending.

The Last Half of Darkness VGA is not the same as the original, non-VGA, version of the game. Since I've played both, I'll list the differences. You can't die in this game at all: there are no vampire girls to splatter you all over the floor, no Jason wannabes ripping your heart out of your chest, or any of that. This version is much easier; most of the rooms have been removed, except the ones you need. In fact, the game is pretty much a cake walk. Even if you haven't played the non-VGA version, you can still beat it in under an hour. There are still scary-looking characters, but they won't kill you.

The puzzles are practically nonexistent, and most involve simply running around the house. There's even a useless item. Besides an occasional error which causes small red lines to appear on the screen, the game's graphics are nice, clean, and have easily discernible elements: the ghost looks like a ghost, and the dagger looks like a dagger. The only problem is that you can barely see the axe. The sound consists mostly of a rather annoying tune at the beginning. There is a speech setting, but I couldn't get it to work.

Last Half of Darkness VGA is quite entertaining until you finish it, but it has no replay value. One adventure is pretty much all there is. So unless you enjoy replaying adventures, don't bother. If you didn't like the non-VGA version and you need something to entertain you, I'll recommend this.

Change the speed setting in DOSBox to 400 cycles max. You will also need to mount a second drive containing the install folder when you install.
