i downloaded the game "abuse" from you site.

when i start it unter winxp pro sp2, it runs at normal speed but without sound.
when i start it with vdmsound, the sound seems to be ok, but the game runs way to fast.
when i start it with dosbox, the sound "cracks" in regular intervals, kind of like a scratched venyl record (this happens with EVERY game when i use dosbox). forthermore, the game sometimes runs a bit fast, but whenever it gets dark, it runs way too slow.

an thoughts on that?
this is less about getting abuse to work an more about unterstanding dosbox and vdmsound.

thank you.

if that is unclear: i mean it gets dark inside the game, the lights seem to be flickering in those caves.

what's your hardware ? can it be that you run dosbox on a slower computer (less than 1 ghz) or do you have many services running in windows ? try and press CRTL + SHIFT + ESC and look how your CPU usage is with and without DOSBox ... oh, and check your memory usage once you are there ...

in fullscreen mode the cpu load is always 100%, in window mode its about 50%
214Mb of physical ram are available.
i have 512 mb ram and a 2GHz pentium 4

For the game going to fast (DOSBox) you should try slowing sown the frame rate. It's like F11 or something.

try setting your colours to 16 bit
and try a different output for dosbox (dosbox.conf)

100 % is way too much
even 50% is too much in windowed mode with your specs.
it should be around 5 % maybe less

Isn't there a Windows port of Abuse and isn't Abuse free (Not Abandonware) now? If so then you should find and use that.

i already have the windows port and i already said this isnt mainly about getting abuse to work.

and my problem is not that the game runs too fast in dosbox.

(if some people only could read...)

already whwn im doing nothing (norton commander cursor blinking) the cpu load of dosbox is at about 30 %.

what output is supposed to be fastest?

i set output to overlay now and deactivated double buffering (just for fun, dunno what im doing)

its still like 30% at norton commander, but when i start a game, it really goes down to 1-4%. thats weird.

but when i go to fullscreen, graphics suck. it looks somewhat washed out. i cant grasp it jet. maybe some kind of linear antialiasing or something.
