Well, going back wouldn't be too big a deal.* I could go back to my first copy of the game where I merely have my characters created and go from there.* After all, I really haven't gone through too much.* Just needles, about half of LA, the agricultural center, highpool, and quartz.* It's not that big a deal to start over.
For me, the end of the Vegas sewers always marked the end of part A, with part B being the rest of the game. But restart by all means.

I'm considering recreating the characters to be more useful though.* I started two of my party as primarily melee characters and they're becoming less and less useful as the game goes on.* I'll probably give them anti tank skills or something so they can carry their weight later in the game.
Melee is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact with the right melee weapons you can inflict the greatest damage, besides energy weapons on full auto. But you're right in that the game doesn't really reward skill specialisation. I'd say put a point in all gun skills and brawling except rifles, spare points could go to clip pistol, assault rifles, AT weapon or brawling. AT weapon is IMHO more useful in desperate situations when you need to take the enemy out quickly, but toward the end there are some powerful energy weapons and much more ammo than you'd find rockets. (And it's really awful when you're armed with a rocket, and get 'xxx attacks and misses'.)

And yes, I do know about the libraries.* I wasted my skills on stupid things :P* I'll just go back and make it all good.
Man, you really need confidence, sleight of hand, bureaucracy and combat show to survive in that there hostile desert. Really. Honest. :bleh:

Well, I've started over and things are going fairly well.* My characters' constitutions are a little low but in general I have a more skilled party this time around.* And I think I figured out what keeps constantly freezing the game up.* So far I've been using the mouse for just about everything except moving (which is impossible to do well with the mouse).* Switching to keyboard and parking the mouse at the side of the screen seems to have gotten rid of the problem.* One question though:* When I put the mouse over my characters and hold down the button, time goes much faster then when I hold escape down.* Is there any way on the keyboard to get the same time speed as the mouse?* I'd like not to use it at all if possible but I don't want to have to wait twice as long for my characters to recover.
Wow, you posted quickly...

Good luck in your new game. I don't know about the keyboard, have a look in the Dosbox config if you're using Dosbox, the keyboard control panel in Windows otherwise. I mentioned macros previously, pressing ctrl+function key allows you to program a macro, press it again to record. To delete the macro press ctrl+function twice. So for instance by pressing one macro key you can execute 1000 ESCs once you've programmed that. I've found it useful for gambling too.

It's never too late to ditch the mouse, that's for sure. And this would help anyone else who finds their game freezing often. Good stuff. k:

I bought this game in 1985 and played it on my beloved Commodore 64. It came on 4 5 1/4inch flopies, each of which had to be copied before you could start to play. This took as I recall about 80- minutes for EACH disk. I have never enjoyed a game so much since then. Yes, modern games have beautiful graphics and sounds - but this game had a PLOT and wasn't simply "if it moves shoot it".
Far and away the best game I ever played. I got fallout and - boy was I disappointed.

I think the C=64 graphics were better, or as I remember them (so long ago; I used to have to use my imagination, not like games now LOL )

Sit across Head Crusher, Use the Visa Card, then press Space when prompted for a direction. Hope that helps.

Apologies, that should be 'sit opposite Head Crusher'.

Head crusher is a miniquest for loot. When you give him the visa card you are prompted to read a paragraph from the manual, which tells you to deliver a password to one of the nomads camps. You then get further instructions to get to a stash of loot nearby the camp, along with a shovel. The location of the stash doesn't change, so you can actually skip Head Crusher and go directly to the loot LOL Be prepared for a fight, btw.

Ah, the memories! I actually remember buying this game at the now defunct Lechmere chain in Boston - I still have the original floppies, booklets and box. I've never been so transfixed by a game as a kid, not even the later Fallout series. Maybe because the graphics were so primitive, yet the actual plot and text so rich ("Metal Maniac stitches the Desert Dweller full of bullets, exploding him like a blood sausage"), that it left so much to the imagination. The little booklets of vignettes was absolutely priceless. The player was only supposed to read the paragraphs cited by the game, but, of course my youthful curiosity got the better of me. There was one that specifically said "If you keep reading, the Needles Thought Police will arrive at your door within the hour, whereupon your fingernails will be systematically removed," and it absolutely freaked me out.

As far as finding the cave at Highpool: yes, it's between two trees on the western end. It helps to have high perception to notice it. Then, if I remember correctly, use the rope, and use the climb skill to get down. You will also need to use the climb skill to get around the boulders. Sorry, but Bobby's dog (do I remember the name of the kid who lost the dog?) has to be killed, you cannot avoid it once you get into the cave.
