Well, Warren Spector worked on the first SS, Thief and Deus Ex...
I just maxed out Heavy Weapons to use the Fusion Cannon, but I have a feeling it's a crock of sh*t... EDIT: Doesn't matter, just beat the game. xD

Try playing System Shock 2 or Thief I / II late evening in a dark room, monitor only, for a couple of days, and you'll see why it can be scary at times The mood created in those games is great, it's pretty catching.

The thing with System Shock 2 is, if you know what you're doing, halfway through the game you're going to be kitted out with an assault rifle and grenade launcher that decimate any foe in a couple of hits... kinda loses the scare factor by becoming too easy. Not that it's the only game with such a problem, Deus Ex becomes ridiculously easy too.

It's probably old news already, but for those who have the classic System Shock 2 on CD or aren't considering getting it from GOG (Steam version works with it, too), all you need to get it to run on modern machines and operating systems like Windows 7/8, is SS2Tool 5.1 (and installing the last official patch 2.3 before that).
There came out an unofficial (and relatively mysterious) patch 2.4 (called NewDark) for System Shock 2 and Thief 2 in mid-fall 2012, which modified parts of the engine and enabled support for all modern resolutions (widescreen, 32bit colors, running on DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 6 as originally etc.), all new graphic cards, EAX sound for any sound card through the open-platform API OpenAL, and ability to run like a charm on current hardware. The GOG release of SS2 seems also to at least partially rely on, or include, this unofficial patch, and SS2Tool also includes the latest updated version (with few "new" bugs fixed) of it. SS2Tool is essentially the better installation program for SS2, even with a Blood patch and language text corrections for German versions. Last edited by Scatty; 20-05-2013 at 10:54 AM. |

If you use the GoG version it doesn't matter. If not, worked just fine for me in XP and Windows 7 (with the exception of the cutscenes).

As I recommended before, you should get the GOG.com version; with any other you'll probably hit the wall again just like so many people before.
You don't need a big computer for this game, almost any will do, the graphics aren't very advanced. The requirements are: "Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8, 1.8 GHz Processor, 2 GB RAM, 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 9.0c, 2GB HDD."
