Here's the deal on Yellowstone, as well as I understand it: Yes, the whole area is one big volcanic caldera and is thus geologically unstable. It has erupted cataclysmically three times, as far as we can tell: 2.1 million years ago, 1.3 million years ago, and 640,000 years ago. These numbers lead some people to speculate that another eruption is due at any time. Here's what the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory says about that:

Quote:
Massive caldera-forming eruptions, though the most potentially devastating of Yellowstone’s hazards, are extremely rare—only three have occurred in the past several million years. U.S. Geological Survey, University of Utah, and National Park Service scientists with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) see no evidence that another such cataclysmic eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the foreseeable future. Recurrence intervals of these events are neither regular nor predictable.
Basically, you can't use statistics about complex geological events in the past to predict those in the future. If you want to know more, here is the official Yellowstone Volcano Observatory site.

We are so preoccupied with huge cataclysms, that we forget that we can by run over by a car, everyday...

Not only run over by a car...

you can drown
you can fall down stairs
you can get a rock against your head
your car can explode
you can get an heart attack
you can be electrocuted
...

hmm... not long to live anymore

You can avoid all chances to die if you are careful, with one exception - the death out of age.

If you're always careful and trying to awoid death - you'll probably get a hear attack - you're nerves will give out on you and you'll suffer a stroke (you'll get real paranoid first and they lock you away...)

Why, just look to the sides before you cross the street and you're safe enough already.

Nope, you dont...And you can be STILL hit by meteor,or lighting,or be shot, or have plane crash, or,or,or,or.......
There is really that much possibilities to die that if you think about all them(and especially after you see "nice" and "calming" statistics) you wonder, that you are STILL alive...

And what about walking safely on the sidewalk with a drunk driver hitting you (because he missed a turn, his car hit the side of the road and he fliped on the roof - accidentally hitting you...).

There are situations where you can be really careful - but will still end up in a accident.
