In the back of the drive (near the plugs) there should be some jumpers or a switch, and a simple scheme to follow (the instructions should be also in the drive documents).

Ok here is an example:

note that the settings are different with every brand of Optical drives, this is just an example of what you should be looking for. A similar schematic should be on your actual drive

If it detects the drive itself, then take it out, alter no pins and flip the whole drive upside down. This is how I make my CD Writer work. Yeah, you will have to hold the cd in the drive while closing it, and make sure it doesn't fall onto the floor when you open it. Just make sure your power will reach it, as it will probably be farther away than it used to be.

If this doesn't work, and the computer detects the drive itself but not the CDs within it, take it back to where you got it from and get a new one.

That's a very "unusual" solution...

i had a similar prob. month ago with my cd-rom drive.. the bios detected my cd drive but windows didn't showed it in the explorer.. here's what i did:
there whas a tiny cable, pluged in the cd drive, that i had no use for,
I tried to figure out where to plug in the other side of the cable, and then i've found the right plug for this cable somewhere at my soundcard.. i pluged the cable in and it worked... This Cable allows you to hear cds with your headphone directly through your cd-rom drive, but somehow windows (i have win98) does need it to be pluged in the right place to accept your cd-rom drive...
