I played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego as a kid, though I really can't remember anything that it tried to teach me, geographically speaking. Back in the day I thought it was fun.

I remember most of the other games from after I graduated from high school.

I currently have my child playing many of the Super Solver games (Reader Rabbit is listed), because I KNOW they are helping him with his math and language skills.

A good game makes learning more fun. It keeps a child engaged, and sometimes they won't even realize they're learning. But the games are just a tool. They can't be depended upon to provide 100% of the learning experience to the child.

Although not PC games but Spectrum ones (at the time there was no way i could afford a PC) i would put a few of the home made ones (well they were made in former Yugoslavia):
- one was a fun and challenging was to teach you read, write and spelling with a minigame attached in the end (only if you were sucessfull). dont' know the name but it was a good one.
- another one was all about math. best one that helped me a lot to practice was the one which included a horse race. the faster you replied, the faster you horse was. win a few races you can play the minigame in the end. it helped me calculate faster
- 3rd one is definatelly Eurorun adventure game. i never managed to finish it due to certain not so randomized roulette play and finding that moose was difficult. but at least at the time it tought me a lot about European geography, country capitals, most revered tourist sites, countries specialties and local cuisine. the latter it also tought me how certain things are prepared. such as for example Vienna stake. the goal was to collect all the specialties form arround the Europe and eat them in Belgrade on a large feast. i got a tape to run it on emulator, but haven't found the time to do it again and try to finnaly finish it.

Alll videogames imply mental exercise, of course some more than others. When people talk about educational games they're usually talking about a more particular kind. This list is about remarkable games that are remarkably educational, not about remarkable educational games. In that case they should have included at least Civilization, Sid Meier is so going to sue them.

OMG! Number Munchers FTW!! Seriously, though the prime numbers level in that game was my favourite past time for a whole year at least. I played a remake which had prime numbers up to 4 digits, which was killer. Can't find it any more though. On my ti-84+SE I have a game similar to number munchers called exponent test. All the questions are like 84^-2 or 37^3. It is almost impossible unless you cheat (use another calculator) but I got a score around 35... Where is this going? Oh yeah, NOWHERE. At least I'm getting there fairly quickly. Blah, blah, blah (chokes and dies).

Damn, you got me, I had overlooked the "80s" bit. Even Railraod Tycoon is one year late.

Well but at least Pirates! is educational about history and geography. :P
