Sure, as humans they deserve some respect, I won't go out of my way to kill, maim, or otherwise injure a Christian, nor will I really, generally, go out of my way to insult them. But when they come to ME about it, I have a problem.

Let me put it like this: I grew up in LA. Really nice, really open-minded family. No racism, no hatred, no bigotry, none of it. I like to think that I am open minded. Hell, I grew up in a fairly Catholic family, so my moral values probably are slightly Christian(Now, before that argument starts, Catholics and Christians are, in my mind, close enough to be the same. Same general religion, same god). Then, when I turned 10, my dad and I moved to Memphis, Tennessee. The middle of the damn Bible Belt. At the time, it was a new experience, though I loathed to leave my home. First day of elementary school, at the end of the day (Wednsday), one of the kids I had made friends with asked me which church I went to.

"I don't go to church. Never have, actually."

You'd think I shot Mother Teresa (Whom is one of those people whom I respect above many others, simply because she was a tough old hag). I heard pencils drop, for fek's sake.

"You... don't go to church?"

"Nope."

"Then what religion are you?"

"I don't have one, really. I mean, I never really thought about it."

"He worships Satan!"

"Devil worshiper!"

I'm not making this up. So, for my entire stay at Elementary school, I was flagged as a tool of TEH DEVEL! and pretty well tormented with mountains of religious crap, which I'd much rather avoid altogether. Let the religious folk have their beliefs, doesn't mean I have to accept it, like it, or even care about it.

Middle School (Junior High), same damn thing. Some kids followed me from Elem. and spread the word. This was the time when fights were a big deal, that if you couldn't fight you weren't worth anything. I didn't give a rats behind about my "image", I just wanted a damn education, so I got my behind kicked. A LOT. By self-righteous Christians who thought they were doing a service by "Beating the fear of GAWD" into me, as several kids put it. This was also when the teachers started doing it, trying to convert me DURING CLASS on a weekly basis. I tried to sue for violations of the first amendment, but in Memphis children have no rights except the right to sit down, shut up, and do what the adults say.

High School. I was your classic rebel without a clue. And Christianity still ran rampant in that school system. This time, however, I won ninety percent of the fights, and by sophmore year I had a reputation as the creepy Satanist guy in the trenchcoat (It was a London Fog, a really nice one, too) who's really quiet and who can kick you behind in a heartbeat. Thus, people left me alone. I calmed down, I became a little more laid back, and my viewpoints of the world changed.

Now, here I am. Does the story make sense? Depends on how you see things. To me, what it says is that I have a reason to dislike Christians, because of my experiences with them. Yes, it's irrational, yes it's probably dumb, but it's the way I see the world. And as for hating random-person A (Black, White, Jew) you're entitled to like and dislike whomever you want. Not my place to judge your opinions.

And if you don't like me because of one simple opinion, then I guess I should just log off and never come back.

If I win that stupid contest, my e-mail's in my profile.
I'm blessed to have been born in secular Sweden but I still know what you talk about, religion still play a large role in the country side of the north and while I've lived in a city all my life that sort of intollerance can still be found in the more ural areas. On the flip side, the few religous families who settle in a city are usually treated with respect.

Stroggy, your beliefs are sacred to you, and I respect that. But you shouldn't judge something unless you've experienced or read it yourself. You can't rely on other people's interpretation.
Wendy... I think you should know Stroggy well enough by now to know, he'd never make a statemant, if he wouldn't be sure of it (because he read it or experianced it himself).

I guess we can conclude, that 'us' none christian folks still know more then enough about the bible (actually more them some fo the 'followers'). That's amazing.

Can this be closed now???

@Seb,
You r right. Many non-Christians know more about the Bible than Christians. In fact, most Christains I've seen practise Christianity because they think saying they r Christian is the only step to heaven. Which is stupid. Others know better, but actually think that it is once saved, always saved. Which it isn't. Bottom line. Most "Christians" I've seen are unfortunately, so stupid, that they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and are not really practising it even though they say they r. Also, most Christains who profess it, in New York, are called stupid ****s by most people/jerks/jack***es and most don't want anything to do with them. Which is a horrible way to act toward people. I've literally seen people yell at some of my friends (who r christian) to get away from them. One person went as far as to hit one of the smaller kids. In short, there are people out there who would kill a Christian just because they were Christian. Which is a horrible way to be. I plan to not enter this discussion again, but thought that everyone should hear my say in the matter. As far as atheism, I have nothing against those who practise it, especially since about 3/4 of the worlds population does. LOL

Atheists are only 2.5% of the world's population. It's estimated that there are 149,913,000 atheists.

Why does everyone want his to be closed?
If someone is insulted by this talking (perfectly civilized) then they should look at another thread. It's like the crazy dudes on tv saying "Internet porn is the work of the devil. It should be banned". If they would stop looking at it for long enough, they would realize that it wouldn't bother them.

The quote with the monkeys is probably out of order. LOL

Edit: We are so outnumbered. Did you know that there are only like 1,500,000 Scientists in the whole world?

I'm guessing many atheist, or non belivers (whatever they may call themselfs), are christians "on paper", so to speak. I probebly am simply becouse I was baptised, yet I'm not a christian at heart. I might get married someday, but it will be for traditional reasons and nothing else.

I fully understand you.I am also baptised but I am more or less atheist. When I was baptised I was too young to argue about it...
Bible is great book with great ideas but when someone tries to apply them in practice they are mostly flawed...
And please not again request to closing this topic. On abandonia met too many people with diferent beliefs and ideas to not to have flaming discussion.Infact it is good to have one at least til arguing stay on civilized level...However I learned a lot already from this topic and I hope I will also learn from it in future

So when they'll be counting the population next time you can say you're an atheist, you will be accounted for...

Most people in the world are on religion or another. About 2 Billion are Christian, and about 2 billion are Buddhist/Hindu. Then, there are the assorted 2 billion other people with their own religions (or not one at all). So, our kind are vastly outnumbered :not_ok: . Ah well. At least.......

Oh, and I was baptised as well, but that doesn't really tie you to a religion at all. My parents were married in a Lutheren church, and a Methodist priest said to my dad that they weren't really married. My dad almost punched him in the face LOL
