I was just looking through my dusty collection of old games, and found Sanitarium. I loved the storyline, and the fact that it actually had emotional impact on me, and decided I would play it again. But after installing it, I would try to play and it would give me some sort of error, and crash.

Anybody have any idea how I can get it to work?

Which OS'd you run it in, and did you run it under DosBox, or just plain under that OS?

Shouldn't be able to run under DosBox, anyways, as it's a Win95/98 game. Tried putting the settings of it to Win98? It's possible one way or another under XP (dunno how to do it exactly, as I still use 98SE)

I put it's compatibility mode to 98, it started but then it suddenly froze and crash, it did it everytime I tried to run it.

Isn't there something that emulates a W98 enviremont?

You got the cd for the game in your cd-rom drive when trying?

Yes, of course I do.

It just keeps giving me compatibility errors.

After reading about one guy who could prevent his game from crashing by keeping Mozilla Firefox open while he played, I experimented. Firefox didn't work for me, but if I keep AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) open while I play the game, it does not crash at all!! The difference AIM makes is quite striking...if I start the game without AIM being open, it crashes quite quickly. This is the only thing I found that worked for me...if I'd known to do this sooner, I would've been able to play the game three years ago when i first bought it.

Just open your buddylist and leave up an away message (or go invisible or block everybody)...if anybody IMs you, the Sanitarium window will minimize, but you can open it back up again. If AIM doesn't work for you, try Mozilla. Experiment with different memory intensive programs.

You can also try Inferno's compatibility page: http://home.earthlink.net/~infernofilecabi...arium_Setup.htm

His setups helped me play the game awhile longer before it crashed, but it was the AIM fix that helped me complete the game.

Hope this helps!

The game does crash within the second stage of the game, when your in that deserted town with all the mutated children when you start walking towards the south. If that's the problem then a patch will sort it, I'll just try and find it....
