I found out that this game needs a special patch to work on systems with Windows XP or higher. If you don't use a Windows XP patch for the game, an error will appear that says the Machines.exe file is not a valid win32 executable. I managed to find the patch on a site called wiredforwar.org

By what I remember, even the demo don't work on modern systems. I'll check this one when my network connection is back on my home.
