I usually play games for years before I finish them, because I play them and then get bored of them and leave them and then come back to them and so on... I'm sure I have around 20 games installed on my computer now that are in various stage of progress.

The only exception to this rule were Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 which I didn't stop playing until I finished them.

Btw, what do you count as finishing a game? Like sometimes it's easy enough to discern but sometimes not so. For example, Medieval Total War - I beat it with France in one age, do I need to do it in other ages as well, or maybe with another nation? Or with Assassin's Creed, there are some side quests I never finished (like collecting flags or killing all templars)? Finally, old games like Fire Ant that get quicker and quicker every time you finish all levels?

I consider games "finished" once I beat the game.

Like Ascendancy... I must have played around a hundred different games. But I must have finished to its very end only 4 or 5... Why? Because I know that past a moment in the game I'm 100% sure to win. So what's the point?

But I usually at least finish the game once to its conclusion before I do that.

For strategy games where finishing is impossible, I consider it finished when I've invested enough hours to know the game inside and out (e.g. 100 hours in Europa Universalis II). In strategy games where the story is important, finishing the campaign is enough (e.g. Age of Wonders).

So, go there and figure it out.
After creating account you add games to your list, games that you played and finished, games that you are playing right now. It's great for tracking the state of your collection/gamer history.

Then you'll know answer to this question:

Beaten games - Games you finished on any difficulty, e.g. completed main story in Assassin's Creed
Completed games - Games that you finished on highest difficulty with all bonus stuff found/done, e.g. completed Assassin's Creed and found all flags, templars etc.
Mastered games - Completed games that you finished on additional personal challenge, e.g. completed Assassin's Creed without being hurt by guards or on speed run etc.
Null - Games that don't have ending, but you play them anyway, e.g. Chicken Invaders

The best thing about Backloggery is that its your personal list, you're having it for your own sake, so saying you completed something but you actually haven't is lying to yourself, and that is sick.
But be warned, you may become "little obsessed" about getting your games to completed status. I know I have.

Ok, according to the list from backloggery.com, the games I consider finished are the beaten games, although occasionally I complete a game since it doesn't take much effort to do it, or it's fun to do it. Like in Assassin's Creed it was fun finding the Templars and sneaking up on them, but looking for flags was dumb (I would collect them only if I stumbled upon them).

I wonder if I ever mastered a game...

Those definitions are subjective. They mean nothing, really.
