i just got a message from my friend who told me this

set machine=cga for that game in order to be able to use the keyboard.

(should actually be your default action for very old games).

Think california games require that as well.

so stick to your newest dosbox and set your machine to CGA and play without any shuttering

dude, that worked perfectly!

I changed the settings in the config file, and I'm running the game perfectly at about 1400 cycles with 0.72 (any faster and my first torch burns out in seconds and the sound is obnoxious).
