I get a lot of messages saying my population can not support any more military units. I think one unit is disbanded (or discarded right after production) every time the message pops up.

My population is 33.930.000 people, and i only have 125 units. I searched the manual and the internet for anything on this limit but couldn't find a word. It's not trivial (i really have to figure out how to keep the peace in my cities and wage a war without knowing exactly how many units i'm allowed to have).

Does anybody know what determines this limit, how to increase it and how to figure it out without sacrificing ("miscarriage") too many units?

------

"Defense Minister:
Sire, our population can not support so many military units. We must eliminate some of our old units before we build new ones."

Maybe it's hardcoded into the game itself?

Units take shields to support. So they are limited by the city they're supported from, not by your whole civ (unlike in Civ3). Shields used to support units aren't added to production each turn, and if you have more units supported from a given city than it can support, they'll get disbanded even if other cities have shields to spare. You can change the city a unit is supported from by taking it to the new city and pressing H. Some governments give you a few free units per city, see Civilopedia for details.

No no no... I know the shields are one restriction, and you get the "unit was disbanded" warning if a city can not support it's units, but i'm referring to something unrelated to shields (or so it seems).
All cities can support all units (shield-wise), but i just get the warning 'our population can not support so many military units'.
I have 19 settlers, 19 caravans, 9 diplomats and 80 other units, the population is 6.860.000 people.

Burt777-

I have hit this limit before too and I think it is the absolute max number of units that you can have in the game- I don't think it is related to your population size either- no way to overcome this limit unless you want to spend a lot of time hacking the game... If you want to use any more military units then you'll have to use/disband the diplomats & camels but I suspect you have almost finished the game already. Once you have fully railroaded & mined/irrigated the area then there is little use for the settlers (except pollution clearance) so you can re-merge them with existing cities or (my favourite) build new cities in unlikely places- like at the poles! It's great for trade!

Cheers-
Oli

One more thought...
If you destroy one of the enemy units and you can build another then perhaps it is a global limit which includes all enemy & your units, though this would be difficult to prove unless you have wiped out everyone else and still hit the same limit...

I lean to think that it's a global conventional memory limit. I didn't hit such in Civ1 but I did lots of times in Colonization, where it was very restricting (since a lot more info is stored about each unit than in Civ). If I'm right the limit is global, that is it doesn't depend on how many units you have but on how many units all players (computer-controlled ones included) have. The "population" would be just a pretext, a memory allocation error handler.

So one thing you can try is choosing a lower number of rival civilizations, so the computer players won't hog the memory. Another fix may be switching to the Windows 3.x version of the game I think.

I also have a limit of 126 military units. This limit doesn’t depend on total amount of units in the game or your population. My opponents have just a few units, so it can’t be a global limit. There is a similar limit in Railroad Tycoon (for trains) and SimFarm (for machinery), although it’s not mentioned in manuals too. So it’s probably just a game feature.
