I think the best one is the first. Fresh jokes, great ambient and sound for the time and all that. Then the second, which added more freedom of movement and yes, harder puzzles. About the third one, it didn't felt that good to me. It was like a dated remake of the previous ones, with too many cliché characters and self references to the saga.

I think the 1st game is a classic no doubt, the 2nd one was a bit different but still classic and the 3rd one brought it full circle, probably my favourite of the 4, but 1 is right up there too, the voice acting did it for me too, especially Guybrush, Murray and LeChuck, Elaine not so much, but they fixed that in #4.

Personally, self-references in games like Monkey Island do nothing but add to the humour - the particular instance that sticks in my mind is in MI3 (I think?) when you stick your head out of a hole and reappear in a scene from the original game. I laughed pretty hard at that.

Agree with Minigun here. With these self references it becomes sort of a meta-game which can be hilarious at times. One good example is that one mentioen above.

Yes, the ESA is a single entity who is omniscient and does all this because it wants to.
It's the publishers who are being douchebags, not the ESA, they're just a bunch of lemmings.

Thay are something like a part of the game culture a EVERGREEN if you like to put it this way. The fact that LucasArts has left ESA doesn't mean their games automatically become free. Our past experience with that company dictates we are very careful when dealing with games they published, so rather than act the way we usually do, we'll have to politely ask them for their permission first. Which might take a while. |
