Carmack has pretty much been going down hill, you can't really name any "fantastic" games he's recently worked on. And those "fantastic" games mostly just took advantage of hardware and barely provided anything new (Doom 3, Quake 4) so he can pretty much shove it since he doesn't know how to make a game anymore.

I think it is not the best thing to diss PS3 and even Wii for their hardware, still, let's wait and see.
