![]() If I've understood this completely, yes, the chistians did take the date for christmas from pagans, but the reasons are a bit more understandable.
Think of the early christians, when christianity as a religion was commonly hated and outlawed. They celebrated their holidays on the same days as the Romans did their celebration just to blend in so that they wouldn't be recognized and get killed. That was a bit more discreet.
