Guys, try a game called Protostar: War on the Frontier. I remember playing it in the old days; you can trade, explore a sector (including planet surface), several races to deal with, name planets and alien species and you have a story to unfold.

Not as big or as open-ended as Elite, but much more fun. And much less buggy too.

protostar was a helpless little game really. With a very small playwindow if i recall right.

Im doing Sol-Barnards and within 1 game year I've made quite alot of money. Im also on my 3rd ship. 65 tons of space, man!

My essentials:
Drive
Autopilot
Scanner
Nav Computer

Thats all you need when travelling in safe systems! And then you dont really need the scanner.

I really want to learn this game, but so far I'm completely clueless. Everything seems so hard to grasp. I guess I'll just have to keep trying, as I hope it'll be rewarding in the end..?

I am stuck when departing:
Bug info: Inside docking: the ship will not accelerate at all, if there's enough space I can maneuver about in all directions. When there isn't space it will hit a wall and lose Hull fast.
Outside docking: As soon as I hit the 'Engines On' button the screen shakes up and down wildly and any attempt to fly away results in crashing to the planet surface.

Make sure you refuel you're ship. This happened to me as well. Whenever you buy a new drive, you start without any fuel in it, so you need to fill 'er up.

As you can see the first three hard-coded Missions start IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS! So you really haven't a lot of time to do them. As the guide says, start with mission two, you will make a lot of money!
I made 50.000 in 1 month.

i usually pick up mission at random. i am a trade, so i take only assasination that pay good. now i see there is a whole plot in this. maybe i will start all over again.

i never managed find them, but if it's money you are after then you will get it very fast like this:

1: Go to sol (system)
2: Sell all equipment except for autopilot nav computer and atmospheric shielding.
3: Buy enough fuel for a trip to Bernards star (near Sol)
4: Fill up remaining cargo space with luxury goods
5: Hyperspace to Bernards star
6: Go to a station (I used miller depot)
7: Sell all luxury goods
8: Buy enough fuel for a trip back to Sol.
9: Fill up remaining space on Robots or Computers
10: Hyperspace to Sol
11: Sell Robots or Computers for huge profit. (look on bulletin board for special buyers)
12: Repeat until very rich.
