Probably you don't have to make up any symbols, allthough it could be the case in some puzzles. The thing is: these things are made to test your pattern finding skills. If you're unable to see the patterns, this is probably not you forté. No biggy, you can train it a bit by doing a lot of these puzzles!

k: I get what you mean. This is the final one. In these type of patterns like this is it impossible to consider all rows,columns and diagonals.
