You can play Patrician II/III as a pirate, or engage in piratical activities while keeping a nice front as a merchant. I don't know if this feature is part of the original Patrician, however.

There was also this game called Taipan(from commodore). It was a poormans-Pirates!,which happened in Japan.

There might be a PC-version.....

ACtualy Taipan was a succesful game at the time. It came before Sid's Pirates and it was a good game IMO. It was released for a number of systems, I think all of that time, like Commoder 64, Amiga, Atari series, Amstrad, Spectrum and though I do not know I presume also for the PC.

You could try Tortuga. Far from the greatest game ever made, but fair enough if you just get bored enough.

I've enjoyed Cutthroats a great deal, although it is extremely buggy even when patched. Port Royale 2 is good, although like Patrician games it is centered more on the economy then piracy.

Or maybe you could try Puzzle Pirates?
