"I do recall one space game I used to play against my older brother (until I got too good and he refused to play). It had two different modes, one story mode, and one vs. mode. The versus mode consisted of an overhead view of an area of space. The two teams were built of a choice of ships, all very different from eachother.

The story mode involved traveling around space recruiting different races to your side to battle a large alien race. I wish I could be more descriptive, but like I said before, my memory is not so great. If you could in anyway point me in a direction to find this game, it would be much appreciated!"

Star Control II. In arcade mode, you choose battleships on either side, and go to it. In story mode, you travel around the universe solving quirky problems and meeting races, trying to get them to join you against an alliance of enemies. Excellent game, for pacing, humor, writing, and creativity.
