I've been trying to play Chess Master 5 billion and 1 on my XP system using DosBox, but I've been running into a few problems. When I try to run the game out of the emulator, it says that it requires on megabyte of ems (expanded memory). When I run it in dosbox, the screen just turns black, and the cursor changes to a different style. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem and run the game on my machine? Also, on an unrelated note, do I need to mount a drive each time I run dosbox?

I think you mean "Chess Maniac 5 Billion and 1". In that case, Dosbox Compatibility list has it as incompatibile with v0.65, but working with v0.58. Try getting 0.58 from here.

As for drive mountings, they need to be mounted every time DosBox is restarted, BUT you don't have to do it yourself. Have a look here for more information.

Haha, yes, I meant chess maniac. Thanks for the help! I didn't even think to look at the compatability list...

Oops, I think I spoke too soon. I'm still having the same problems, even with dosbox .58...

Wait, no... Now I'm having issues with conventional memory. Apparently I don't have enough of it. :tai:

Now I'm getting a different error. It says "Fatal Error!!! Can't open file: protect".
Thank you so much for your help!

I found the following as a fix, but I don't know how to do it...

edit CM5.EXE
position:
512858
change into:
00
This unprotect will completely remove the doc check routine.

Ok, after a long day, I finally got the game to run. Well, everything but the sound, but I'm not too worried about that. Thanks for all of the help!

This seems to be an instruction to hexedit the executable file, but seems to be ripped out of context...
