![]() I recently downloaded Longhorn(build 4074) to see how the project was coming along. It was in ISO/DVD format. This is the first Distro of windows that I know to be built for DVD media. More isnt always better. I burnt it to a disc, and installed it on my backup system. The boot sequence didnt seem to be much faster than XP, just more on screen eye candy... The desktop looks remarkably like the mac os x. My concern wasn't in its appearance, however, if I had been judging by the looks I would say alot of things were mimics of other OS's. I read some of the technical documentation on the DVD. Some of the technical rambling were beyond my understanding, but what I could gather was a strong dependancy on .NET frameworking. So the real test came, yea, you know what it is..... GAMES.
I tried a slew of games, 30 plus on the system. 3 of those 30 ran error free, others had bootup problems and serious crashes wich led to a complete reboot 80% of the time. What games ran? More recent titles such as Morrowind, Halo 2, and you guessed it, Dungeon Seige. The rest of the games as I said before ran slugish if at all. Isnt is bizzare that the only games that ran on it smoothly without error were title with Microsoft lties. Morrowind was realeased on X-Box, as with Halo 2. Dungeon Seige is a Microsoft product as well. ..... From what I've read this OS is mostly a new build. Not much has been taken from previous source. That means more compatability problems for dedicated windows users. Why build from scratch when source for "stable" OS's allready exist? And if linux is so "problematic", as some might say, why is M$ spending so much time and effort to devel their own Linux Desktop...... Some interesting articles for you all to flame about LOL http://software.itmanagersjournal.com/ http://www.mslinux.org/ |

![]() I won't engage in a discussion about this subject until I have tried out the complete version, and I suggest you do the same.

![]() historically, m$ doesnt add all the compatiblity stuff until after its finished making the new code. and they do a LOT of patching so things run. ive heard talk that they arent focused on doing that these days.... but.........
if they dont, then people wont upgrade. example.. a big chunk of people are STILL using win98. a lot of businesses are still using win2k. as for the size... a lot of linux distros are gigantically bloated multi-cd affairs... with 432 different text editors. people upgraded to xp because it was better.. even though it takes more resources. if longhorn manages the same trick, it will be used. if it has lots of DRM or is otherwise more restrictive than older versions, people wont touch it. people arent stupid. so wait and see. |

![]() Let's hope Longhorn will have less of those ''your computer might be at risk'' pop-ups and other annoying ''we just want to help (you buy ms products)'' messages. then i'm happy |

![]() It's not a beta. It's not even alpha. It's a technology preview with a limited feature set so that developers can start playing with the new libraries for things like the sidebar. The second most recent drop (PDC) came with a warning that it should not be attached to a production network. Now they've lowered that to just:

![]() Look I'm a Microsoftie at heart, so I might be a bit biased. I don't see why they get critisized so much, they created the whole computer industry for us (I mean, I know it was there, but they pushed the computers into homes by making their software easy to use and intuitive)
So they copy ideas. Every company I know of does it. I mean if they didn't do it we'd all still be driving Fords. Black ones. Anyway, people are always saying why doesn't Windows have this feature [which is in Linux, or in Max OS]? Well they put it in, and then people complain that they're copying. Remember too, that Linux X-Windows is just a copy of Windows. Also, you can't critisize something and then say why are people taking it seriously. The fact is Longhorn is a MAJOR revamp of Windows, and so early in it's alpha stages that it's a wonder it even ran on your machine. They are planning on changing just about everything on it. So obviously that's why it doesn't run everything it should properly. Whew, got that off my chest! |
