okay, i cant remember the name, but i think it's circa late 80s early 90s. i know it was made before 92 tho.

basically, if you look at the Master of Orion 1 star maps, it kinda looked like that. i think you're some sort of pirate or something and you start off near the top right corner of the map (it's a static map, never changes or anything). one of the first things you need to do is go east-ish to a space station or broken down ship to get some stuff from it. throughout the map there are wormholes that will help you get from A to B quicker.

that's about all i can remember, but if i see a screenshot of the map, i'll most likely be able to say if it's the game or not...

thanks in advance

In other words, Star Control 1. (Star Control 2 started you down at the bottom left of a huge screen.)

i dont think it's star control. is that the game with the aireleelou (or whatever) cuz if so, that aint it, but it came out around the same time or before (by a few years) but not after...

[edit] Definitely not star control. just tried it.

is star control the one that you send a little "rover" down to a planet and collect minerals and stuff? cuz if not, that's another clue to the game im looking for.

and another thing, i dont think it had a sequel at all.

Yes, Star Control 1 and 2 had the Ariloulaleelay (or something).

Star Control 2 had you sending a little rover down to planets (often very hostile planets) to pick up minerals and other things; Star Control 1 (aka Star Control) did not. The screenshot a1s posted is from Star Control 2, just to be clear. Borodin is right, though: you start near the lower-left corner of the starmap in SC2, unless your monitor is upside-down.

A couple of other possibilities: Starflight (http://www.mobygames.com/game/starflight) or Starflight 2 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/starflight-2-trade-routes-of-the-cloud-nebula), maybe?

Solar Winds didn't been suggested yet. You are a kind of bounty hunter of some sorts, then at some point in the first part of the game you need to test a new warp engine. However, this is a plot to get rid of you, and you must rely on some new aliens you met to get back to known space. The way it is played look like what you described, but there is a lot of fighting and it's more an action game than anything else...

From his description, sounds like Solar Winds. Is that game abandonware, or still being sold?

I think it's Epic Megagames. Anyhow it's not abandonware and don't expect it to be before at least 70 years. Sorry for that, you'll have to buy it.

Good God, nothing'll be able to run it in 70 years.

Heh. Not Solar Winds either. I tried the "trial" version of that already. I wish I could remember more details...

Maybe X: Beyond the Frontier or any other from the serie?

X.BTF and the sequels are 3D, first person spacecraft sims, and since he tested Star Control to see if that was the game, I doubt he's looking for a 3D sim.
