I remember playing a game a few years ago, it was a Win32 game, not DOS where you had a hero, some sort of wizard and you went around a map on hexagonal spaces and attacked other wizards or fantasy type creatures. I also think you would level up and such so it was sort of a hybrid game, but I can't remember the name at all...

Any clues?

I think you mean Fantasy General, avaible in Abandonia.com

You had a wizard and you had definitely lots of hexes, kinda turn-based strategy though, but it had experience, magic and magical items so a bit RPG I suppose.

Hope it helps

Might also be Gemfire, also featured on Abandonia.

Hmm, but he said it was Windows game. My money's on Vantage Master Online (http://www.falcom.co.jp/vantage/index_e.html), a freeware turn-based fantasy strategy RPG. It's hex-based and revolves around wizards (spirit summoners) and their creatures.

'Tis Reloaded material, though.

Wow, I hope that's not that game he's looking for else his description is one of the worse I ever read... I know Vantage Online, I finished it and it's one of the few games I really liked on AR.
