I guess you can tell by now that I simply love wrestling and basically all kick-the-other-guy-in-the-ass kind of games. This game is no exception.
It's yet another wrestling game, but this time it's truly an old gem. Made in 1991 by Ocean, Wrestlemania's graphics are good for the time in which it was created, and the game runs smoothly enough (even if you do see an occasional glitch at the bottom of the screen). The sound is not really worth mentioning, though. The gameplay itself is simple enough, and you can either compete for a title and play against the computer, or practice against a friend (unfortunately your friend will always have to play 'Mr. Perfect', while you can choose between three wrestlers).
I remember when I first played the game on a C64; I absolutely loved it. I always chose either 'The British Bulldog' or 'The Ultimate Warrior' (I somehow dislike Hulk Hogan, and these are the only choices available). I liked the taunts that the wrestlers give to each other before the start of the match most of all (they don't have an effect on the match, but are kind of funny).
You don't have many moves -- just your basic kicks and punches. To start running, double-press in the same direction; and you can do a dropkick while running (or the opponent can counter by throwing you in the air). There's basically just one wrestler-specific move and that's the move they execute after winning a power struggle (just stand close enough together and they'll lock their wrists and start testing their strength). Whoever wins will do something to the opponent. These power struggles are really murder on your keyboard (you must press left and right as fast as possible).
All in all, a nice little game I loved to play, and that brought back many memories, so I'd give it a 4.
I had a feeling that it runs a bit slow, so I played it at 6000 cycles. Also, I didn't find a way to change the key map, so I'll tell you which keys to use: O – left, P – right, Q – up, A – down and Space – hit; Player two can use the arrow keys and num 0 for hit.
Dear Abandonia visitors: We are a small team that runs one of the largest DOS Games websites in the world. We have only 3 members of staff, but serve 450,000 users and have outgoing costs like any other top site for example: our servers, power, rent, programs, and staff. Abandonia is something special. It is a library of old games for you to download. It is like an old gaming arcade with all the old games in their original format. Abandonia is a place where you can find great old games and have fun four hours and years. To protect our independence, we are dependent of our friends using the site. We run on donations averaging around 6 USD (5 Euro). If everyone reading this gave the price of a cup of coffee, our fundraiser would be made easier. If Abandonia is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online for another year. Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia.
