Slordax: The Unknown Enemy is a fun, yet frustrating 2D-Shooter by John Carmack. It was published by SoftDisk Publishing, because at the time they had a contract with iD Software.

The game's story is pretty simple: Legend has it. that long ago a very-powerful race called the Slordax, set on to conquer the galaxy. This bloody war lasted for a century, but in the end they we're repelled. But now, there's something going on in the Slordian system, which was considered "dead" for over 700 years. Are the mighty Slordax returning?!
The Intergalactic Defense Alliance has sent you to explore and eliminate all enemies you encounter and, if necessary, eliminate the Slordax once and for all!

The gameplay of Slordax is pretty simple: Go through levels, shoot down your enemies and pick-up power-ups ut Slordax has a unique, and in my opinion, bad twist: Unlike traditional 2D-Shooters where enemies come in waves, shoot you and pass-by, in Slodrax the enemies charge at you, and if not destroyed, will literally bounce around the screen until destroyed. This doesn't sound all that bad, but seriously: most of the time they just bounce around the bottom of the screen, making it impossible to really shoot them down or they will block your path and become a "pain-in-the-ass". This really makes the game hard and frustrating at times, but if you're good, you can avoid this from happening. Also, there aren't much power-ups in the game: You get to upgrade your weapon to maximum with 2 power-ups, you can make your ship more maneuverable, get rapid fire and more lives. The enviorment is really tricky to maneuver, because most of the time there's an enemy in your way and you crash into it. And did I mention that you if you get hit just once, you will loose all your power-ups... Well, this shouldn't be problem, but add all the bad things I said together and you'll really get frustrated.

The game only supports PC-Speaker sounds or a Headset, which is pretty disappointing.

Slordax has nice and detailed EGA graphics. It's quite colourful and detailed, although, sometimes you don't know what's going to kill you, and what isn't.

In conclusion, despite all it's frustrating flaws, Slordax: The Unknown Enemy is a good 2D-Shooter that's worth a try. I'll give the game a big-fat 3. :)
