Might and Magic II - Gates to Another World

Like in the previous part of the M&M series you again have many mazes, many creatures, many fights, many secrets, many possibilities… But in addition to that you also get better 16 color EGA graphics and some more sounds.

Also this game is easier to navigate. Still all location look almost identical, but now there are pop ups of text saying which location it is (or outside the city icons of places such as castles). Due to a lack of a compass it’s still not easy to navigate, but at least there are road signs to point where to go (while outside).

The new characters you create still have no gold to start with, but you can import the characters from part one.

The floors within the town are checkered, so you can actually judge the distance between you and the thing you see in front of you, which is undoubtedly a plus, but you will have to turn side to side to see if there’s a wall or not. Looking forward it always seem like there are no walls neither on your left nor right.

The creatures and places you encounter show up as nice little animated sprites in fact one of them even greets you, but unfortunately you still need to bump in the wall to see if it’s real or a door you just can’t see (you can’t even see where the city gates are, unless you bump the wall in the right place).

Enemies are numerous, but if you’re not too reckless and hasty you will be able to improve your characters before reaching enemies they couldn’t handle at first (so moderation is the key), of course if you want to speed things up, you can always use one of your characters from the previous games (all the whole set of them) and then you’ll be at top strength from the very beginning giving you a great advantage (and you can skip the initial “warm up” phase of building up your characters.

Like I said the game has much better graphics, although as the prequel it also has the EGA graphics, but much improved. Unfortunately some of the creatures you encounter do not seem as well made as previously. They wanted to use more colors, but the feeling is, like some paint just spluttered on the screen (not with all characters though, some actually do look much nicer). The combat is still only described with the stats being shown, although I was hoping for some cool animations of your characters (but you can not even see them, to know what they look like, let alone watch them fight).

All the commands you can perform are just shortcut keys again, but the dreaded # has been replaced. Also the character crating is a bit nicer. You throw the die to create the characteristics of the characters. You can re-roll it, but there’s a great option of exchanging stats. So if you want a hulky character (because you rolled a high might score) with little brain power but its endurance is low (while intelligence unnaturally high) you can swap the two values and here is the brainless mass of raw strength and endurance. This is a very nice and handy feature indeed, but be careful, the character classes do change if you mingle with the stats too much.

So the sequel is an improved version of the first part, with a new and just as complex world (Although slightly easier to navigate) and a technical upgrade of it even though they are only set one year apart and both use the EGA graphics (but already the title screen shows they’ve put more effort into part two). It’s definitely a must have for all the RPG fans out there.

Running in DOSBox it might tell you, you don’t have enough memory to run the EGA mode. Just run the loadfix before starting the game.

Dear Abandonia visitors: We are a small team that runs one of the largest DOS Games websites in the world. We have only 3 members of staff, but serve 450,000 users and have outgoing costs like any other top site for example: our servers, power, rent, programs, and staff. Abandonia is something special. It is a library of old games for you to download. It is like an old gaming arcade with all the old games in their original format. Abandonia is a place where you can find great old games and have fun four hours and years. To protect our independence, we are dependent of our friends using the site. We run on donations averaging around 6 USD (5 Euro). If everyone reading this gave the price of a cup of coffee, our fundraiser would be made easier. If Abandonia is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online for another year. Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia.

When Abandonia was founded it was to collect and present all old games where the copyright protection had been abandoned, hence the term ’abandonware’ and the site name Abandonia.com. We are still doing our best to keep the site open and free and will appreciate your support to help it stay that way.
