How can I know if a game is abandoned or not? I think the release year isn't enough.

First check to see if the producer is still selling or supporting the game. That is the most important rule.

Also the game must be older than 5 years, and that no-one own the copy-right.

Did you try to run the game with DosBox?

Well, it's weird, because I have run Colonel's Bequest and I can run The Dagger of Amon-Ra (the other Laura Bow game) with sound and no problems without DOSbox. Could it be the difference lies in that they're from different makers? I'll download DOSbox and see what happens but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd appreciate them

ok, I got the sound up and running in DOS box but now I can't figure out how to make the window bigger. In the README file that came with DOSbox it gives a command to make it bigger but I can't get it to work. I don't think I'm typing it into the right place. I'm feeling quite technologically impaired.

I think Alt+Enter will do it.

a bit extreme:

open dosbox.conf
output=overlay (used to be surface)
hwscale=2.5 (used to be 1.0)

save/start dosbox/enjoy

If you have trouble with DOSBox then try ScummVM which runs it without slowdown and with better graphics scalers. Hmmm...I seem to spend a lot of time telling people about ScummVM

ScummVM is great, but only build to run old adventure games. If you want to play anything else, you'll still need Dosbox or VDMS.
