Back in <insert time period here>, there were a couple of windbags that thought they could fly. For that, they created some more windbags, which they inflated with hot air, and tied a basket to it.
Good start? |

Do you want it to be a historical or fantasy story?

If one is talking about a PERSON who is a WINDBAG - it refers to somebody who talks a lot, but does little, somebody who is full of himself and full of HOT AIR (empty promisses)... But the HOT-AIR balloones are also windbags... How about this for a start: Poeple have always dreamt of flying. Ever sinse the story of Icarus there have been attempts to make wings, so people could fly. But all have failed. The in the 18th century a revolutionary idea came forth. People don't need wings to fly, they need an air-ship. Just like things with their specific weights less the that of the water don't sink, so yould things with their specific weight lighter then air get off the ground. And what is lighter then air? HOT AIR! So if one would collect enough hot air, one could fly and thus the HOT-AIR balloones were born. |

"...And now Samos, sacred to Juno, lay ahead to the left (Delos and Paros were behind them), Lebinthos, and Calymne, rich in honey, to the right, when the boy began to delight in his daring flight, and abandoning his guide, drawn by desire for the heavens, soared higher. His nearness to the devouring sun softened the fragrant wax that held the wings: and the wax melted: he flailed with bare arms, but losing his oar-like wings, could not ride the air. Even as his mouth was crying his father’s name, it vanished into the dark blue sea, the Icarian Sea, called after him."
-Bk VIII:183-235 Daedalus and Icarus Like Icarus mankind has always relished the idea of being to soar between heaven and earth, in defiance to all laws of nature... this really writes itself.
