Bascially, except it's been going for decades longer than American Idol

Eurovision is the twisted concept that the European public TV broadcasting companies have of what's fun (paid by taxes).

In 2005, Lebanon intended to participate in the Contest. However, Lebanese law does not allow recognition of Israel, and consequently Lebanese television did not intend to transmit the Israeli entry. The EBU informed them that such an act would breach the rules of the Contest, and Lebanon was subsequently forced to withdraw from the competition. Their withdrawal incurred a fine, since they had already confirmed their participation.

Man, this is crazy!! Having to pay some 100.000 dollars just for wanting to sing a song.

That's funny, cause it's not just any song, it's a really really bad song.

Your mileage may vary in that one.
I mean, such procedures are considered typical elsewhere. It reminds me of having to pay some 40 euros of escrow (dunno if that's the right word) in order to send my papers and apply for certain jobs. Then again, this is Greece I'm talking about, I don't know about other countries.
I consider it even crazier than having to pay that enormous sum to be allowed to sing in a competition.

...then again, if you think of the money it'll bring to the artist and his country's local record companies... it could be a nice investment!!!

That money is simply the contribution to fund the contest, anyway.

Eurovision is a terrorist convention! There is no way music this terrible can't be bad for your health!

The only hope it stands is for British Rock and Viking Metal to come to the rescue!

Man if Canada could go we'd scrounge a band of Avril Lavigne and Anne Murray and Peter Mansbridge and all other Canadian people that have appeared on TV to DESTROY all the European contestants!

Isn't Justin Bieber a Canuck as well?

Avril Lavigne on Eurovision? Man, that's like a coup de grace to an already rotting music contest.
