I believe that really is just you, as for me MSN works great through Miranda.

EDIT: Oh, and it really is worth a try, this Miranda. It's not overly pretty, but I find it very functional and - above all - incredibly stable. I installed it several years ago when I needed something that supported Gadu-Gadu (a Polish messenger) and haven't regretted since. It doesn't seem to take up much of the system resources, either.

I've also tried Gaim, but it was a horrible resource hog, and proved to be very unstable.
