Capo, if you are playing AGD version, you need to train A LOT (for several days) with Uhura in the Guild Hall, before you have a chance of beating enemies.

Also, you can set your skill level to 'Easiest', to make combat a bit easier.

For increasing the stats or to understand the new combat system ?

Uhura teaches you how to fight, and tells you special moves. But you also get stronger, the more you train with her.

Even in the orginal version training with Uhura was needed. Grinding for stat boosts was all the rage just like in QFG1 with the trainer at the castle. Going out into the desert isn't really needed till after a certain point in the game when a few quests are out there. Even then fighting the monsters is only really needed for a Fighter as they get points for it.

But don't forget that right at the beggining it can spare tons of frustration (and time) to go out and fight down a bandit for the sake of money from what you can by map and compass!

I have never tried that twillight, I can see why to do it. But I never had trouble finding my way to the Money Changer, I always had a copy of the map that came with the game so I could find my way there.

It is not just the trouble finding the way, but the possibility of instantly teleporting to locations instead of walking right from the beggining. Try THAT with the paper map!

The time you save over me would be small if any at all. You take time to fight monsters to get money then buy the map. I walk straight to the money changer, change my gold, walk back get map. We both have the map, time taken depends on you finding the bandits and me not getting lost.

The trainer in the castle train only fighters, anyway going in the desert looks like the only thing i have to do waiting for the caravan.

Playing without the in-game map is nearly impossible, the city is a damn labyrinth

Heh QFG II was infamous for that horrible alleyway navigation. Rightfully so.
