me and my friends often use some sticks for some good old sword fighting. Our eyes are still intact.

Ya sabers are good too, the samurai swords are interesting, but theyr 2 handed, and thus not quite as fast....
Not all "Samurai" Swords are two handed. They do make katanas that are specifically ment to be weilded with two hands, but most Samurais used multiple weapons (not necessarily at once) but they had several different kinds of blades, as well as a bow. They often had a form of To sword, (toe) or something of near similar size like a Wakizashi.

Katanas are way faster than most of the larger western swords.

Actually, the saber is curved, less than the Scimitar, which due to the various different kinds of saber, it is hard to say it is actually faster than a one handed katana. Katanas are curved, but they are so thin. They are ment to be the supreme slicing weapon, and capable for decaptation.

Everybody is forgetting the cutlass, a weapon that is inbetween a short sword and a longsword.

- how to make a basic one handed practice sword

When making a two-handed practice sword, you won't use a basket hilt, but honestly, I would suggest getting used to a one-handed sword before attempting to learn two-handed. You'll learn the basic movements without the extra weight, and then when you switch to two-handed, it will feel more natural, even with the difference in style.

Anyway, instead of a basket hilt, you make a crossguard that you can secure to the sword as is comfortable for you. Scadians generally wear gauntlets when fighting two-handed so as not to break our fingers.

Other than the crossguard and gauntlets, and the length and weight of the practice sword, making a two-handed sword is basically the same as making a one-handed sword.

To practice with two handed swords you have only two possibilities: katana (or ninja-to, which is quite similar) or heavy medieval sword.
I'm learning with real katanas and i've also tried some medieval stuff, so i can speak about it with some experience!

You must choose the kind that fit better your characteristics, so i give you some explanations, hoping to help you

The katana can be used basically in two ways:
1 samurai style; which is a bit "ritual" with strictly fixed techniques and you need quick reflexes, cause the fight should finish in few fences
2 ninja style; there are even techniques, but they are more flexible (well this depend on the master...) and the combat style is less polite than the samurai one

The medieval sword is really heavy, and the point of the fight is to save the forces trying to move the opponent where you want to give him the right hit: is quite like a chess game!

My favourite is katana cause it can be "useful" in quite all situations and it can fence and break, but if you have to combat in little spaces should be better have a wakizashi or short swords (like roman ones, for example)
Even the rapier is very funny and effective but a bit difficult to hide when you walk by the street...

If you pass in Italy come to me and i'll teach you the basics! k:

Enjoy and... pay attention!

Actually, a to's far from nearly the same as a katana. Katanas are made of high-quality steel, while tos're made of lesser value, making them more prone to break. Katanas're allowed to shine, while tos'd make it hard for a ninja to go unseen if his sword'd shine, so they made it so it doesn't shine. Also, tos're alot smaller than katanas, as they often had to be used in corridors, and a small sword's more useful there.

I can't agree, i used both and they can be used in "quite the same way"!
You have to choose a katana or a to, just according to your character, but you will use them in the same way...

Original japanese katanas are little, cause japaneses are actually little! And about the steel... you can make a sword with the iron that you want (if you can afford it), don't you?

About the shining... well i just talked about the "handling" and not about what is better to use in a secret killing mission...

Gee. Don't insult the Japanese that way. The Chinese were, and always have been smaller than the Japanese

If you know anything about history you know that To swords are MUCH smaller than a katana.

A roman shortsword was pretty much a lead pipe with a slight wedge for an edge.
