Tolkien rules all except the jap i mentionned earlier!!

Tolkien was an inspiration to all warcraft games/heroes of might and magic/might and magic/wizardy/Baldur's gates and any other games where u have the short but strong dwarves the highly agile and precise and wise elves but weak in hand to hand combat and the average human who has average stats (Forgot about morrowind) he also created orcs and black elves (urukays)found in kingdom under fire

Of course, the Lord of the Rings trilogy has some weak points, but don't forget that Tolkien was the first one to ever have created true Fantasy. Don't compare him to the new authors of the Fantasy, that would be not fair.

Well, I go along Vodi's list plus add my all time favourite - childhood memories - Eric Kästner k:

@Lizar - Tolkien dod not write just Lotr - try reading Hobbit or Simalirion!

Since I study Englisch and German as a major -there are tones of books I could write down...

And saidly - I think something like this has been a discussion before - I am not a big fan of SF.

Oh I know that, and I respect him for that. its just that I do not like his style of writing.
As I said the results of his book should be no reason to love the book.

Another favourite writer of mine is Victor Hugo, mostly for Les Misérables.

The first to pop into my mind.....

Tolkien
Astrid Lindgren - Swedish, wrote stories for children
Thorbj?rn Egner - Norwegian, he wrote for theatre, though.
?orgrímur ?ráinsson - Icelandic, writes mainly for teenagers.
Terry Pratchett - Haven't read much by him, though.. But I like what I've read so far

Did I miss it, or could it be, that no one named Douglas Adams???
Other writers would be:
Arthur Charles Clarke
Issac Asimov
Ernest Hemmingway
Jose Saramago
Albert Camus
Umberto Eco
Michael Chrihton (spelling)
Anthony Burgess
Hans Christian Andersen
George Orvell
Jaroslav Boček
Frenk Bukvič
Ivan Tavčar
Ivan Cankar
Miško Kranjec

and many others, but these would be among my favorite.

I hope you'll read the Big and Small Nicholas (or something like that - I'm translating it to English, from the Slovene translation that was made from Danish).
It has a lot of good black humor in it (a guy kills his grandmother to sell the courpse for a pot of gold).
