The same can be said about any encyclopedia, really.

I am aware the Wikipedia content can be written by anyone, and in some cases it is not 100% reliable. However, it is a marvellous source for quality information and shows what voluntary work can really do, and in this case it is really spot-on.

Personally, I've allways viewed Finland as a part of Scandinavia, and I'm sure there's other encyclopedias that agrees with me.

Many others - including some official sources - consider Finland a part of Scandinavia as well, but it's not exactly true.

Encyclopaedia Britannica online says the following: "The region of Northern Europe made up of Sweden,Norway, and Denmark is called Scandinavia. Its people are known for their rugged pioneer spirit as well as their quest for international peace." (Link)

(Rugged pioneer spirit? What? :blink: )

They continue: "The term Scandinavia sometimes includes Finland; Iceland; and the Faeroe Islands, which are part of Denmark, though a self-governing region."

This 'sometimes inlcudes' is a bit disturbing, as it doesn't mean anything concrete. It is true, though, outside Scandinavia Finland is often included, although technically it's incorrect.

Geographically Finland cannot be included, as it's not a part of the Scandinavian peninsula. (Britannica again: http://www.britannica.com/eb/article?tocId=9066026) Also, the Scandic mountains can only be found from Sweden and Norway.

Culturally there are many similarities, and thus the term Nordic countries has been introduced. Looking at the matter from a historical point of view Finland could be included, as it has been a part of Sweden.

Denmark is of course the best scandinavian country. In Norway and Sweden you can't get drunk, without spending your entire paycheck! Never been to Findland or Iceland.

EDIT: And ?land doesn't really qualify as a country. It's an autonomous province of Finland.

Few years ago, we took a semester in geography ONLY about the nordic countries.
There they listed ?land..
