I think the best way to avoid fetch quests is to find a very PVP-centric MMO. I started playing EVE Online about a year ago and thought it totally sucked at first. The single player quests are generally pretty dull, but once I got into PVP it turned into a whole new game. There was definitely some initial frustration, especially considering the learning cliff I had to get over.

Anarchy Online used to be a lot more fun, going free and the influx of "Froobs" has made a lot of the older players bitter, your best bet is looking for a guild thats recruiting, posting on their forum, and getting help that way...
On a related Funcon note, Age of Conan rocks asses, and if I :nudge nudge: knew anyone in beta they could tell you how things are going but I don't so I can't If you want the real poop on the game you can go to the official website, or my Clan's forums at http://snowhawkclan.org/ |

AO crashes at least 5 times a day... and itself, it lacks some things I wanted... or just have to do something to get to that part...
