The music companies brought this upon themselves. :ranting:

For decades they have been ripping off artists, buying their copyrights so the artists themselves could starve to death while the music industry kept raking in mega profits of other people's talent.

Untill recently, with legal music download, it was NOT possible to buy seperate songs. You either had to buy a record/CD that was FULL of CRAP or you had to wait years untill they finally brought out a 'Greatest Hits' album.

The music industry = maffia.

So I don't care about the music industry. To hell with them. And I don't even download music regularly (only one song when I hear it; this is most times a rather old song).

Let's face it, most of the stuff that is on sale is CRAP. An example from the games industry: last year I bought a compilation of Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault plus campaign disks. It cost me 50 Euros. Within a few months I stopped playing it because the game stinks. It is so unrealistic it makes me puke and the scripting makes it fun to play a few times but after that it becomes boring.

I downloaded "Ghost Recon" years ago. I enjoyed playing it so much because of its realism, that I bought the full game (at reduced price of course). Then "Desert Siege" was again on sale (at reduced price) and I bought that one too.

And what about government? The British government is killing Iraqi people. They have been doing that for years ever since the First Gulf War with their incessant air raids and the boycot against Iraq which has caused the deaths of half a million of children. American government: the same. My Dutch government has always collaborated with the American government, so they cannot tell me what to do and what not to do. They are all crooks themselves.

DOWN WITH CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS

the same goes to those big corporations who support/run these corrupt governments.

They can pry my money from my cold, dead hands!

I don't think you understand the situation, MPV. The companies do just fine off of pirating operations. Its the artists themselves who are affected terribly by the pirating operations.

care to explain the scheme? :eeeeeh:

Pirating benifits only one faction in the long run- the pirates. (obvious)
it only benefits the buyers in short term, because companies tend to make crap to reduce costs.
and it definetly makes no money for the companies/authors. (obvious)

If you have some other view on this, I will be eager to hear this with some explainination.

Ugg. I really hate all these debates. Can't we all just be friends?

Anyway. The companies are exactly the same with or without the piracy. It is the individual artists who get screwed.

I can't remember why, but I read this in some financial magazine somewhere. It made perfect sense at the time.

My main point was:

Big corporations = maffia.

Haven't any of you seen Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11?" One of the most chilling scenes was the conference where all the 'respectable' businessmen were discussing business possibilities in Iraq. One guy explained: "And the great thing is, the government always pays." Of course, the US government is using taxpayers' money and oil money from Iraq.

For those who've seen it, remember the slip of the tongue of that American speaker, who said they had been planning the invasion uhm, liberation of Iraq years before?

The conference was organized by Microsoft...

War profiteers. They're also helping China refine its censorship on internet in China.

I don't believe that. As far as I can see, the only way the artist will be directly affected by piracy is if he either published the game (or cd or book or whatever) himself, or if he's getting royalties. To my knowledge both of these are very rare in the gaming industry, and even in the music industry royalties deals are no longer that common. Most musicians today make only a fragment of the big stars of the last decades, but this isn't due to piracy, it's due to the fact that they're offered crappy contracts.

I suppose there is an indirect effect on the people who make the games, though. If the company they work for go belly up, partly due to piracy, the people who work there will obviously lose their jobs. It's a bit difficult to blame this on piracy, since there are bound to be a lot of what if's when a company goes bankrupt.

But saying that a programmer at Bethesda is directly hurt by piracy is like saying that an engineer at Ford is hurt every time a car gets stolen, IMO.

I do believe that the companies are hurt by it, though.

Yes, piracy is broadly accepted by about anyone intelligent enough to understand that what the big companies are sending to us is crap wrapped in a very light interesting matter. They don't care the singlest bit about quality, only cash flow is important to them.

That's why I'll never bother with piracy myself. If I find something I personnaly find worth of purchase and that I aquired it illegaly then I'll be happy to buy a copy of an original to support the producers. Otherwise it is the opposite; I always find infuriating to spend good money on a product which doesn't deliver what it should.
