Well Smetana is really too popular over here, because his Wltava (Moldau) is basically just a variation of our national children folk song (but he put it in A minor - the original is in C major). So I had to listen to it so many times in shcool and repeat this fact, that I got sick.

I forgot to mention another great Russian composer before - Prokofiev (his music is also in some great Soviet classical movies by Eisenstein).

Well you may know this but Carul cu boi (I believe that is the name of the folksong) is also the basis for the israeli anthem.
The thee (folksong, anthem and Moldau) are very alike, only the anthem is in a minor note, to make it more mournful.

There's a lot of great and well-known classical songs that you keep hearing from time to time on TV etc. but sadly I never know the title or who composed it... :/

Thanks for clearing that up. I often forget to mention these 'little' details.

I got to know many componists of "classical music". I didn't remember the names of all of them, there are too many, but those I liked most of all: Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart. They have easy, but feeling kind of music.

Russian composers I use to listen to: Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky.

Russia is a great country for music and has affected other countries with its best innovations.
