one group of students created program to produce random scientific projects
just give it some key words and it will create scientific nonsense
they even got grant for one of this..

A square has 4 sides, but if you think about it, it has only 4... if you were to turn it 3d, it would look like a box with no bottom.

Ok, think of a really thin cylinder that has no top or bottom. Now magically form it into a square-shape. Wala, a 4 sided 3d object.

Simple enough?

That would have 8 sides (inside and outside). A four sided 3D shape would be this: < made 3D as you describe.
