F8 is not the correct speedup key for DosBox.

For windows, you can try a CPU Killer program (slows down your PC temporarily) to reduce the speed.
For DosBox, try increasing the cycles.

Coz the download link is given from Rockstar page i dont belive that Kosta or someother could change it. Anyway its a modern game and should run well without patchs.

Help please.
GTA1 works too slow on my Windows2000 pro. But if I press F8 it works to fast.

(I also used Dosbox and it still works to slow, even if i press CTRL-F12.)
I don't know what to do. :/

Hey all, I have the original PC version of this, but when I run it in Windows, it is unbelievably jerky and unplayable as a result (even turning the frame-limiter on and off with F8 does no good. This is with both the original CD-ROM & the Abandonia download) I've tried the F11 key to change all kinds of resomolutions, but to no avail. Also I can't get it to run properly in DOSbox; even after setting the controls to default keyboard (up, down, left, right etc.) I can't use up or down to select the options, or left or right to select characters, and when (if!) it finally loads it is even slower and jerkier. Any help or ideas? I tried right-clicking the gtawin.exe file to change the compatability properties to say, Win95, but the option doesn't come up (in Windows XP). Is that something wrong with my computer, or what? I just wanna replay this game again!

What do you mean with the compatibility option not showing up? After right-clicking go to [Properties], then there will be a tab labeled [Compatibility]

Seriously, I used to have the compatibility tab but now it's gone (!) Even when I start "Program Compatibility Wizard" from the accessories Start Menu folder, it buggers up--The "back" "next" and "cancel" buttons have no text on them, and the only one that works is the cancel one, infuriatingly. Debugging doesn't do anything either. I guess it'll mean a reformat & rejigger of the whole XP kaboodle. Seems 1 or two other people on the old interweb have had this problem also, but no-one can recommend a cure for it.

Anyway, back to GTA. It played too fast with frame-limiter OFF, and too slow with frame limiter ON. (The F8 key) so what I did was download Turbo.exe which slowed down the Megawhackahertz cycles to 50% (my comp's an AMD 2600 ~2GHz speed processor) and kept the frame-limiter off. The slowed computer managed to tone down the sheer speed of frame-limiter being switched off to a comfortable, but occasionally fluctuating, speed.

1 other point: a quick way to get past the first level is do the first few easy missions without dying/getting busted so your multiplyer is at about x4, or even x3'll do. Then go hijack a train. Stop at (I think it's south-east Hackenslash area) anyway, the train station is HORIZONTAL - it's the station after the point where you start). Keep getting off and on & rehijacking (with the ctrl key) More and more pedestrian's will keep getting off. When there's a bustle on the platform, let loose with a machine gun, or if you have one, a FLAME-THROWER. Hell yes! The terrified passengers will flee on to the tracks and, as you may have guessed... Bzzzz! That's 1000 points for the first one to pop (or 4000 if your multiplyer's at 4x), and then it just doubles with each extra electrifying. Get 10 pedestrians all to fry at the same time, and you've got 4000 + 8000 + 12000+ 16000+ 20000 etc. etc. points in one go. It's enough to get 1,000,000 points in a few short minutes, and you get the satisfaction of hearing a million and one pedestrian-sprites fry. Plus, if you've got the right station, the cops just keep driving by without stopping, even though your wanted level will be 4 by this point.

Please note I do not condone the activity of frightening people at train stations with machine guns and/or flamethrowers and then watch them get electrocuted as they panic and scarper onto the train tracks. Although, in a computer game, it is very fun.
