Not much details ..... What exact type ?
Anyway, slim chances you'll get sound in pure dos. Disable the chip in the BIOS and plug an ol'SB16 or so in your computer.

Don't remember much of Win95, but I remember 98SE and onboard soundcards meant installing a sb16 (coz that's what I had) card was the only way for me to get sound in DOS.

Unfortunately I have a machine that has PCI slots so a SB16 would not work. Can anyone suggest a card that uses a PCI slot and is dos compatible?

Ensonic ES1370 AudioPCI series has dos support.
The dos drivers for Ensonic cards achieved dos compatibility by emulating an ISA SB16 card. If it's ideal, is another question........ BTW, no ISA slot? Once again someone who wants to run Dos on inadequate hardware........ You would better run Dos on something more 'dosalike'. Get yourself an ol'P1 or something if you want to relive the dos era.

I think there was also a PCI version of Soundblaster 16 available. |

[Side note]
Euuurrrggh, SB live is in fact an Ensonic, Creative bought the almost defunct Ensonic and took over their whole PCI soundcard product line. In fact the sound chip and drivers on all SBlive and derived are based on Ensonic's soundcard. Also: the SB16 PCI exists, it's in fact the Ensonic CT4740 PCI soundcard. Same problem, it emulates an ISA soundcard under Dos. [/Side note] That said, if you really want good sound in 'real' Dos ISA is the way to go; not PCI. Period.

To be complete:
That's my SB16 ISA, I bought it back in 1997 because the onboard soundchip on my W95 PC was complete shit in full dos, forgot what brand that MOBO onboard soundchip was (ALS maybe?), it was adverstised to be 'fully dos' compatible, SB in BIOS and such, but was completely worthless ..... *sigh* It was sold as Soundblaster Creative Labs product, but when you look a bit closer: "model 4170", and that's Ensonic (or was). Have also the SB16 PCI variant, same story, but that's built in my ol'P3, too lazy to get it out.
