Yeah in Microprose games the 100 per cent score was just conventional. Once I got 327% in Civ2, played some more, and then the variable overflowed and I started to get negative scores. LOL They should have made the variable unsigned...

Default Dosbox

This game will work on Dosbox. The problem has to do with memory allocation; to get around it, run LOADFIX.COM at the Dosbox prompt and then run the game.

I love Pirates. Probably the best Sid Meier game ever, and that's saying a lot. I only ever played Pirates! Gold. Is the original much different. I'd like to give it a try, just to compare.

There's no great difference, the remake is a faithful one. Swordfights are even tougher in the original though, or maybe it's that I'm used to the Gold edition.

This is a bit off topic, but there even is an "up to date" sequel called Sid Meyer's Pirates. You can buy it for around 10 euros nowadays and it is one of the few more current games I really like to play. I don't know why, maybe it is as the programmers did not try to modify or improve the gameplay, but simply kept to reprograming the old title (with few additions).

1. Sometimes a governor’s daughter and captured pirates tell me about mysterious Treasure Fleet and Silver Train, but I never can find them. Why?

2. I can't understand if slash (Shift+arrow keys) works in Pirates!

By the way, interesting battle on the screenshot. 1 man defeated 265 enemies

1. The Treasure Fleet and Silver Train move. Be happy if you find them accidentally in a town you're attacking and get more money, but it's not worth hunting after them.

The newer version is a ton of fun, even the ballroom dancing, which is arguably the most irritating part of the game. I remember sitting on my dad's knee when I was little watching him play the original -- I think I might have to go try it out!
